This method statement specifically describes the procedure involved in

installation, monitoring and maintenance of geotechnical instrumentation
(settlement plate) at RB012, Jalan Temoh – Sg Lesong.

The scope of work shall include :

a) Confirmation by SE on the proposed geotechnical instrumentation and

quantify area based on the construction drawings.

b) Supply, install monitoring and maintenance of settlement plate

2.0 MATERIALS

Not applicable.

3.0 EQUIPMENT & RESOURCES

3.1 Machinery/Equipment

The basic equipment to be used is as follows:

a) Settlement plates as per details in Drawing No. WD/RI/BI/C-GT/6386)

b) Dumpy level.

3.2 Manpower

Manpower involved :

a) 1 Supervisor

b) 1 Surveyor

c) 2 Chainman

4.0 CONSTRUCTION METHOD

4.1 Installation

4.1.1 During the installation period, a short section, typically 1.00m to 1.50m of
the steel pipe welded and secured to the steel base plate.

4.1.2 Once completed, these so called “primary” sections or elements are placed
in specially prepared compacted granular platform, arranged according to
the layout of location of settlement.

4.1.3 The above procedure is to facilitate the placement and construction of the
required 1.0m thick sand blankets.

4.1.4 Once the sand blankets has been put in place, the stage loading in the
form of incremental surcharging according the Engineer’s design load
requirement will begin.

4.1.5 Prior to procedure above however, the extension of steel pipe has to be
carried out by means of coupling the joints. The steel pipes are extended
to the required height to enable future monitoring to perform.
Correspondingly, the 85mm diameter PVC pipe will be placed over the
steel pipe along its entire length within the fill surcharge during this period
of reasons as outlined in paragraph 4.1.1 above.

4.2 Monitoring

4.2.1 Once installed, these markers will be monitored using a Dumpy Level,
which accurately record the reduced up to an accuracy of +0.1mm.

4.2.2 A suitable location will be identified to station the survey instrument. The
chosen location would have to have an unobstructed line of sight to the
targets (settlement plates/markers and be reasonably distant from the
influence of settlement or ground deformation brought about the
consolidation of the clay soil beneath the fill surcharge.

4.2.3 A temporary benchmark (TBM) would be sited close to the area of the
project site during monitoring to provide reference record for the
settlement plates/markers readings.

4.2.4 The monitoring of settlement plate shall be done until the subgrade level
of embankment fill or as directed by S.E. The instrument shall form a part
of permanent works and shall remain operational after contract period.

4.2.5 On each occasion that readings are taken from an instrument or set of
instruments, the measured values shall be recorded on a record sheet.
Details of information and values to be stored on each record sheet in
addition to the general information required are given below :

i. Reduced level of top of rod gauge (mRL)

ii. Original ground level at gauge location (mRL)
iii. Reduced level of ground adjacent to gauge (mRL)
iv. Record of fill placed (m)
v. Total thickness of fill (m)
vi. Record of extensions (m)
vii. Settlement of plate relative to base readings and previous reading
(mm)

4.2.6 Frequency of monitoring of instrumentation shall be as follows :

Frequency of Monitoring
Type
Defect Liability
Construction Period
Period

i. Settlement plate 1. Immediately before and right Once a month (if

after each layer of fill then required to be
everyday during filling works. monitored)
2. Thereafter, thrice weekly for two
weeks.
3. Followed twice weekly for next
two weeks, and
4. Thereafter, once a week until
end of construction or until as
instructed by the S.E.

4.2.7 Each weekly report shall include complete information about the work not
limited to the following :
i. A description of monitoring works which have been in operation during
the preceding week.
ii. Information on reading anomalies or corrections, and factors which
may influence measured data.
iii. Observations or remarks.
iv. Diagram showing installed location of instrument (taken from
installation report).
v. Data tabulations or plots of thickness of fill and settlement of gauge
plate vs. time.

4.2.8 The format for the monthly report is the same as the weekly report except
that the required details reported are for a month instead of a week.

4.2.9 Coordination with earthwork and instrumentation monitoring based on the

graph of cumulative settlement vs thickness of fill above settlement plate.

4.3 Maintenance

4.3.1 Any instrumentation that malfunction or damage during contract period

shall be replaced at contractor’s own cost.

4.3.2 All instrumentation in use shall be correctly calibrated. Periodic checks

shall be carried out to confirm the validity of calibration of the equipment
in accordance with the manufacturer’s instruction and any adjustment that
are found necessary shall be carried out.

4.3.3 Indelible markings at the appropriate location at site identifying the

reference no of the instruments shall be inscribed.

4.3.4 Sub-contractor shall take every practical measure to prevent damage to

the instruments.

4.4 Procedure

4.4.1 Setting up level equipment.

4.4.2 Take the reduce level (RL) from TBM by using levelling staff (record
down).

4.4.3 Take the settlement point reduce level (RL) by placing the levelling staff
on the settlement point.

4.4.4 By shooting the precise level equipment to levelling staff, adjust the focus
knob until the center cross hair coincides with the staff reading. The height
of the staff is hence recorded. Then the reduced level (RL) of the
settlement point can be calculate as follows :

Temporary Bench Mark, TBM

+
Height of the staff = RL of the Settlement Point
-
Height of the staff on the settlement point

4.4.5 By comparing the initial reading with subsequent reading, the settlement
at individual location can be calculated.

4.4.6 A graph of Settlement versus Time will be presented in the report through
out the period of monitoring during excavation and construction stages.

5.0 QUALITY CONTROL PROCEDURE

On site quality control shall be carried out in accordance with the

Inspection and test plan as attached in the Appendix C to ensure that the
job is carried out to the client satisfaction.

Materials test must be conducted to ensure their conformance with the

specification requirement.

6.0 HEALTH, SAFETY AND ENVIRONMENT

6.1 The work to be carried out in accordance with the Project Safety Plan.

6.2 All the works shall comply with DRB-HICOM Environmental management
Plan.

6.3 Toolbox meeting will be carried out on construction area at regular

intervals to ensure compliance with the Safety Plan and familiarity with
accident and emergency procedures.

6.4 Conduct safety induction course to workers before commencement of

work.

6.5 Provide PPE to all workers including safety helmet, safety shoe, vest, ear
protector, etc.

6.6 Provide signboards to warn workers and public of dangers associated with
construction works.

6.7 Inspect all machinery at site and ensure that it has competent certificate
and is safe to operate.

7.0 TRACK POSSESSION
