d) Excavation of the soil inside the casing will be carried out using the
rotary Kelly and auger/bucket method.
e) If required, the borehole will then be filled with drilling fluid before
advancing the drilling process below the bottom of the casing. The
fluid used for drilling purposes will be either fresh water, bentonite or
polymer, supplied to the pile from the fluid plant storage area via
supply line.

f) The head of the drilling fluid will be kept at a level high enough to
ensure sufficient stabilizing capacity in the uncased shaft area.
g) The drilling process will be continued to the final depth (if friction pile
design) or to the commencement of rock head level (if end bearing
pile design) by using augers and drilling buckets.
h) At the point of encountering the rock head level, i.e. where the soil
drilling tools are unable to penetrate the strata any further, boring
shall cease in order that the Client’s Representative may verify the
occurrence and confirm the rock head reduced level (mRL). For
drilling into and through rock, rock-drilling tools shall be applied.
These shall include rock augers, core barrels, (round shank, stollen,
roller bit), cross cutters and where necessary, chisels.
k) The level of the drilling fluid will be kept constant and will be
monitored during the whole drilling process.
c) Rock head level will be recorded and agreed prior to boring of the
rock socket. Type of drilling tool and penetration rate whilst forming
the rock sockets will be recorded on the Pile Bore Log Sheet. Final
pile depths will also be recorded and agreed prior to the placement of
the reinforcement cage.
a) When reaching the final depth, loose and remoulded material and
debris will be removed with a mechanical “cleaning bucket”.
b) The cages will be provided with stiffening rings (if required) and
other accessories to enable handling, lifting and installation without
permanent deformations. Cages which are required to be pre-
fabricated in lengths exceeding 12 meters may be handled using a
purpose made spreader beam. Similarly, these cages will be placed
onto a supporting beam, which will be used to carry the cage during
lifting to the vertical.

c) Cages will be installed into the borehole by the use of a service crane
of the required capacity. Concrete spacers wired to the cage will
provide lateral support and ensure adequate concrete cover.
e) When required, access tubes for integrity testing or base coring can
be installed inside the reinforcement cage to the required protrusion
level. If the structural reinforcement cage extends to the base of the
pile bore, these access tubes will be fixed to the main reinforcement
by means of clamping or welding. However, if the base of the pile
bore exceeds the structural cage requirement by more than 2
meters, the tubes will be prefabricated into “cages” using mild steel
bands or rings. Each subsequent section will be joined by means of
threaded couplers or welded sleeves and installed through the
suspended reinforcement cage to the base of the pile bore. They will
be filled with water and top caps placed to avoid inclusions.
c) While pouring concrete the bottom end of the tremmie pipe will be
maintained with a minimum of 2m embeddment into the fresh
concrete column.

g) All testing and sampling of the concrete will be carried out according
to the contract specification. Slump test results will be recorded on
the original “Delivery Order” and the Concreting Record. All
compressive concrete tests will be carried out at the Project
laboratory.
a) Spoil arising for the bored hole will be cleared from the boring
locations by means of a hydraulic excavator as boring proceeds.
The work to be carried out in accordance with the Project Safety Plan.
Particular activities requiring attention are highlighted in the Appendix
D. The toolbox meeting will be carried out on construction area at
regular intervals to ensure compliance with the Safety Plan and
familiarity with accident and emergency procedures.
