4.0 METHOD

4.1 General

a) The pile boring operations will be performed using hydraulic, rotary

drill rigs.

b) The boreholes will be stabilized with a temporary casing in the upper

layer and if required, with drilling fluid once the bore is progressed
beyond the toe of the casing.

c) Temporary casing of single wall construction will support the upper,

unstable sub-strata. The length of the casing will be determined from
actual conditions encountered on site.

d) Single walled (S/W) temporary casing will normally be installed using

either vibrating hammer or by a rotational turntable driven by the
boring rig.

4.2 Drilling

a) Prior to commencing any operations, the Main Contractor will be

requested to verify all associated technical information such as
presence of services, pile co-ordinates, platform and cut-off levels,
validity of drawings etc.

b) After accurately setting out the pile location by a surveyor, a

temporary casing will be set in position Vertical accuracy of the
casing will be checked during the installation process with a level.
The results of this check will be recorded on the Pile Bore Log Sheet.

c) Prior to the commencement of boring, the casing will be again

checked for positional tolerance and the permitted deviations
recorded on the Pile Bore Log Sheet.

d) Excavation of the soil inside the casing will be carried out using the
rotary Kelly and auger/bucket method.

e) If required, the borehole will then be filled with drilling fluid before
advancing the drilling process below the bottom of the casing. The
fluid used for drilling purposes will be either fresh water, bentonite or
polymer, supplied to the pile from the fluid plant storage area via
supply line.

4.0 METHOD (Con't)

4.2 Drilling (Con't)

f) The head of the drilling fluid will be kept at a level high enough to
ensure sufficient stabilizing capacity in the uncased shaft area.

g) The drilling process will be continued to the final depth (if friction pile
design) or to the commencement of rock head level (if end bearing
pile design) by using augers and drilling buckets.

h) At the point of encountering the rock head level, i.e. where the soil
drilling tools are unable to penetrate the strata any further, boring
shall cease in order that the Client’s Representative may verify the
occurrence and confirm the rock head reduced level (mRL). For
drilling into and through rock, rock-drilling tools shall be applied.
These shall include rock augers, core barrels, (round shank, stollen,
roller bit), cross cutters and where necessary, chisels.

i) The Client’s Representative, prior to the introduction of the

reinforcing cage, shall verify the final toe level of the pile.

j) A detailed record of all encountered ground conditions together with

associated times and types of equipment and materials used will be
recorded on the Pile Bore Log Sheet.

k) The level of the drilling fluid will be kept constant and will be
monitored during the whole drilling process.

l) If extensive fluid loss occurs during drilling, the drilling will be

stopped immediately. The bore will be backfilled with the excavated
material in order to create a plug surrounding the pile shaft. Re-
drilling will then take place. If further fluid loss or shaft collapse
occurs, the bore will be immediately backfilled with low strength lean
mix concrete prior to any further excavation taking place.

m)Any and all of the aforementioned occurrences will be recorded on

the Bored Piling Record Sheet.

4.0 METHOD (Con't)

4.3 Pile Length Determination

a) Pile lengths will be as per the current I.F.C. drawings or as otherwise

instructed by the Client/Engineer.

b) Variations out with these drawings or schedules should be instructed

in writing by the Client or if issued verbally will be confirmed later in
the Pile Bore Log Sheet.

c) Rock head level will be recorded and agreed prior to boring of the
rock socket. Type of drilling tool and penetration rate whilst forming
the rock sockets will be recorded on the Pile Bore Log Sheet. Final
pile depths will also be recorded and agreed prior to the placement of
the reinforcement cage.

4.4 Cleaning Of Pile Base

a) When reaching the final depth, loose and remoulded material and
debris will be removed with a mechanical “cleaning bucket”.

b) If required, the complete volume of fluid will then be replaced with

fresh or re-cycled water/bentonite/polymer prior to the
commencement of concreting operations. A submersible and
circulation pumping system or our lifting system may be utilized for
this replacement procedure.

4.5 Installation Of Reinforcement

a) The reinforcement cage will be installed in prefabricated sections.

The amount, type and size of steel will be according to the contract
drawings and specifications. Verification of the correctness and
cleanliness of the cages will be recorded on the Pile Bore log Sheet.

b) The cages will be provided with stiffening rings (if required) and
other accessories to enable handling, lifting and installation without
permanent deformations. Cages which are required to be pre-
fabricated in lengths exceeding 12 meters may be handled using a
purpose made spreader beam. Similarly, these cages will be placed
onto a supporting beam, which will be used to carry the cage during
lifting to the vertical.

4.0 METHOD (Con't)

4.5 Installation Of Reinforcement (Con't)

c) Cages will be installed into the borehole by the use of a service crane
of the required capacity. Concrete spacers wired to the cage will
provide lateral support and ensure adequate concrete cover.

d) In cases where the structural requirement of the reinforcing cage is

less than the depth of the pile bore, cages will be suspended in the
bore using the “double hooks” system.

e) When required, access tubes for integrity testing or base coring can
be installed inside the reinforcement cage to the required protrusion
level. If the structural reinforcement cage extends to the base of the
pile bore, these access tubes will be fixed to the main reinforcement
by means of clamping or welding. However, if the base of the pile
bore exceeds the structural cage requirement by more than 2
meters, the tubes will be prefabricated into “cages” using mild steel
bands or rings. Each subsequent section will be joined by means of
threaded couplers or welded sleeves and installed through the
suspended reinforcement cage to the base of the pile bore. They will
be filled with water and top caps placed to avoid inclusions.

4.6 Pouring Of Concrete

a) High slump concrete as specified in the Project Specifications will be

used for the construction of the bored piles.

b) The self-compacting, ready-mixed concrete will be supplied to the

borehole by truck mixers and placed by the tremmie pipe method. In
the event that access to the pile position is severely restricted, a
static or mobile concrete pump may be used to transfer the concrete
from the truck mixer to the pile. The tremmie pipe will be lowered
centrally to the bottom of the borehole prior to filling it with concrete.
Styrofoam plug - or similar - will be placed into the hopper before
pouring the first batch of concrete in order to ensure a continuous
concrete column in the tremmie pipe.

c) While pouring concrete the bottom end of the tremmie pipe will be
maintained with a minimum of 2m embeddment into the fresh
concrete column.

4.0 METHOD (Con't)

4.6 Pouring Of Concrete (Con't)

d) Where sectional tremmies are used, they should be split at the

required intervals in order to avoid excessive embeddment and thus
insufficient flow of concrete into the bore.

e) Concreting of a pile will be performed as a continuous operation.

f) All associated concreting operations will be recorded on the Pile

Concreting Record. Concrete displacement in terms of actual vs.
theoretical quantities will be recorded graphically on the Concrete
Displacement Record. This format will also be used to record the
tremmie and casing extraction details.

g) All testing and sampling of the concrete will be carried out according
to the contract specification. Slump test results will be recorded on
the original “Delivery Order” and the Concreting Record. All
compressive concrete tests will be carried out at the Project
laboratory.

h) For a continuous assurance of concrete quality and integrity,

concrete will be poured to minimum 1.0m above the theoretical cut-
off level.

i) The temporary casing will be extracted with a crane suspended

vibrator or by rotary methods.

j) Any empty bore length will normally be backfilled with previous

excavated material after initial curing. However, if immediate
backfilling is necessary due to the depth below platform level of the
pile cut-off level, then a suitable material (depending on the
subsequent platform stability requirements) should be introduced to
the empty bore prior to casing extraction. In these instances, due
consideration must be given to the level of latent concrete provided
as cover to the pile cut-off level.

4.0 METHOD (Con't)

4.7 Spoil Removal

a) Spoil arising for the bored hole will be cleared from the boring
locations by means of a hydraulic excavator as boring proceeds.

b) Dependent on the quantities of spoil excavated, it will be removed to

a stockpile area or spoil pit, for drying before loading and removal
off-site. This exercise will normally be carried out on a daily basis.

5.0 QUALITY CONTROL PROCEDURE

On site quality control shall be carried out in accordance with the

Inspection and Test Plan as attached in the Appendix C to ensure that
the job is carried out to the client satisfaction.

Materials test must be conducted to ensure their conformance with the

specification requirement.

6.0 HEALTH, SAFETY AND ENVIROMENT

The work to be carried out in accordance with the Project Safety Plan.
Particular activities requiring attention are highlighted in the Appendix
D. The toolbox meeting will be carried out on construction area at
regular intervals to ensure compliance with the Safety Plan and
familiarity with accident and emergency procedures.

7.0 TRACK POSSESION
