1.0 SCOPE

This method statement covers all necessary works to be carried out such as
identifying source, filling methods, equipment, machineries, slope stability,
compaction methods and test until earth filling is completed at BR 570 – Sg.
Batang Padang. This is to ensure that the earthworks are carried out in
accordance with specification and safety requirements.
The scope of works shall include:

a) Check setting out and existing ground level.

b) Identifying borrow pit areas.

c) Excavation and disposal of unsuitable materials as directed by SE to dumping

area.

d) Ensure all relevant ground improvement is completed as per Construction

Drawings.

e) Cut and fill with suitable material up to formation level.

f) Conduct all necessary test as per relevant clauses in the specification.

g) Construct and maintain all temporary and permanent drains, silt trap, turfing,
etc.

h) Obtain approval from local authorities where applicable.

4.0 METHOD

4.1 Temporary Bench Mark (TBM) shall be established and maintained.

4.2 The Right-Of-Way (ROW) pegs installed by Client’s Surveyor shall be

located and checked to ensure that the permanent works is within the ROW.

4.3 A joint survey will be arranged together with SE representative to check

the existing ground level and setting out.

4.4 Silt trap and wash trough will be constructed as and when necessary,
depending on site conditions.

4.5 All types of ground improvement works shall be completed before

proceeding with the filling of embankments.

4.6 1 sample will be taken for every 20,000m 2 of original soil or borrow pit to
be tested at Geolab laboratory at Tapah for the following tests:
a) Sieve analysis (Form: DRB-F-E004)
b) Particle size distribution (Form: DRB-F-E015)
c) Plastic and liquid limit (Form: DRB-F-E010)
d) Soil compaction test (Form: DRB-F-E007)
e) CBR test (Form: DRB-F-E016)

4.7 If the material is found to be unsuitable, suitable tests such as Cone

Penetration, Mackintosh Probes or trial pits shall be carried out to determine the
extent and depth of soil to be removed or type of ground improvement works to
be carried out. This is only relevant to area/location to be improved that is not
included in the Construction Drawings.

4.8 Material cut from ROW that is found to be unsuitable for use shall be
spread out evenly within the ROW but outside the permanent works area subject
to approval of SE.

4.9 The Surveyor will peg the top of the cut, toe line for embankment filling
and center line of embankment at 20m intervals for checking the thickness of
filling.

4.10 Suitable fill shall be laid in layers of loose thickness not exceeding 300mm
and compacted with vibratory roller up to subgrade level or required level.

4.11 Field density test will be conducted with a minimum of 3 samples per
2000m2 either by Sand Replacement Method (Form: DRB-F-E009) or Core Cutter
Method (DRB-F-E017) after compaction. The sample shall be taken every layer of
filling by the Geolab laboratory personnel and sent for testing to ensure the soil
compaction achieved the required density (Dry density of not less than 90% for
general embankment and 95% for near formation). The Soil Compaction Test will
be carried out as and when instructed by the SE. If the results indicate that the
required density has not been achieved, the soil will be re-compacted and another
sample taken for testing. However, if the test failed marginally, the soil will be
re-compacted a few more passes as instructed by SE without further testing.

4.12 Berm drain shall be constructed if required to protect the embankment

slope from erosion and turfing works will commence after completion of earth
filling and slope trimming. The final finishing of the embankment surface shall be
150mm above formation level for track carriage way while the rest of
embankment is finished to the formation level (subgrade level).

4.13 All necessary geotechnical instrumentation such as settlement plate,

surface marker, inclinometer standpipe and piezometer shall be installed a
directed by the SE.

4.14 A joint survey shall be carried out for completed earthworks together with
SE representative and the earthwork As-built drawing will be submitted to SE for
approval.

5.0 QUALITY CONTROL PROCEDURE
