1.0 SCOPE
This procedure applies to all bored piles that require sonic logging test.
2.0 MATERIALS
Not required.
i) Sonic pipes
4.0 METHOD
4.1 Installation
4.1.2 A Site Welder shall prepare four sets of sonic pipes for
900mm dia. bored pile and six sets for 1500mm dia. bored pile that
need to be tested. The bore pile depth will determine the length of
each sonic pipe.
4.1.4 The pipes to be installed at the toe of the pile shall have one
end sealed by welding.
4.1.5 As the steel cage is being installed to the bore pile, four
12m sections shall be welded to the cage at the toe.
4.1.8 The installed sonic pipes shall be filled with water and then
sealed by black tape.
4.2.1 The Site Superintendent shall check the condition of the sonic pipes
to be tested and refer to the Site Manager if any of the closed ends
have been damaged. If the sonic pipes are undamaged the closed
ends shall be removed.
4.2.2 Each sonic pipe shall be checked by lowering a dummy probe into
the pipes. If any of the pipes are blocked, they shall be flushed with
running water until all obstructions are removed.
4.2.4 The person performing the test shall ensure that all connections are
okay and that the transmitter and receiver are operating correctly.
4.2.5 If any of the pipes cannot be cleaned to the toe of the pile, the Site
Manager shall inform the Client to request a concession or other
corrective action requirement.
4.3 Testing
4.3.1 The sonic pipes shall be marked on a sheet of paper to indicate the
specified logging profile. The distance between the pipes shall be
measured and the value input to the test machine.
4.3.2 The test probes shall be lowered into the sonic pipe in accordance
to the specified logging profile. Care must be taken to prevent the
probes from sticking in the pipes.
4.3.3 When the probes reach the pipe toe, they shall be raised to about
1m above the pile toe to avoid any end effects at the base of the
pile.
4.3.4 The probe levels shall be adjusted until a stable signal is achieved.
This is when there are minimal changes in intensity and delay.
4.3.5 When the stable signal is achieved, the probes shall be lowered to
the toe of the pile and then the cables placed across the meter
wheel.
4.3.6 The test machine is then activated to begin logging. The probes
should be raised at a rate of around 1.0m/sec.

4.3.7 When the first profile is completed, logging is terminated and the
data is stored internally on the test machine. The top part of the
log that records the removal of the probes shall be
ignores/disposed.
4.3.8 The operator shall proceed to the second profile by extracting any
one of the probes and lowering it into an adjacent sonic pipe in
accordance to the specified logging profiles.
4.3.9 Steps 4.3.1 to 4.3.8 shall be repeated until all logging profiles are
completed. After conducting the tests, all tubes shall be filled with
non-shrink grout of similar strength of pile concrete.
4.4 Reporting
4.4.1 All data is initially saved internally on the test machine. When
necessary, the operator shall ensure that all data is transferred to
an external computer hard disk.
4.4.2 The test operator shall print out the results and a qualified engineer
will determine the integrity of the bore pile. A detailed report shall
be given to the S.E. upon completion of the test.
