1.0 SCOPE

This method statement is generally describes the procedures and


machinery required for laying of 60mm thick Asphaltic Concrete layer,
namely ACWC 20 over in-situ deck slab for Railway bridges.

2.0 MATERIALS

i) Asphaltic Concrete Wearing Course (ACWC 20) produced in


accordance to the approved mix design that complied to the DRB-
HICOM Technical Specifications.
ii) Approved water proofing membrane
iii) Tack coat (RS 1 or RS-1K)

3.0 EQUIPEMENT & RESOURCES

The following is a list of equipment to be used;

i) Road paver
Brand : Mitsubishi
Model : MF 45W
Or equivalent

ii) Tandem roller


Brand : Vibromax (8 tons)
Model : 701
Or equivalent

iii) Pneumatic tyre roller


Brand : Sakai (12 tons)
Model : TS 7409
Or equivalent

iv) Tipper Trucks – Isuzu 10 wheeler or equivalent

4.0 METHOD

4.1 Before commencement of the permanent works, trial mix based on


approved mix design shall be carried out at plant and following by series
of standard tests to access the suitability of the proposal.

4.2 Permanent works shall only be carried out on site upon the laying
materials been accepted by S.E.

4.3 Clean and make good of the surface of completed in-situ deck slab by
mean of sweeping or blowing using air compressor prior to receive the
primer coat.

4.4 Apply a layer of approved bituminous primer over the in-situ deck slab
and leave it for at least 2 hours.

4.5 Lay the approved water proofing membrane over the required area prior
to receive the ACWC layer. Tack coat shall be applied on the top surface
of water proofing membrane at a rate of 0.25 litre/m2.

4.6 The ACWC will be plant-mixed as per approved mix design and transport
to work site by mean of transporting lorries.

4.7 To prevent the lost of heat, the transporting lorries shall be covered by
tarpaulin.

4.8 Upon delivered to job site, ACWC shall be discharged directly into the
paver hoper from the transporting lorry. Care shall be taken in any
loading, hauling and unloading operations to prevent segregation of the
mix.

4.9 Before discharging into the paver hopper, the temperature for the ACWC
shall be checked to be not less than 125C.

4.10 Upon discharged into the paver hopper, the ACWC will be laid in single
layer and in single run.

4.11 Generally, the paving layer shall have a thickness of 20% more than the
required compacted thickness with hope that the required thickness can
be achieved after the compaction.

4.0 METHOD (Con’t)

4.12 The laying shall be commenced along the lower side and progress to the
higher side.

4.13 ACWC will be laid as close as possible to the galvanized longitudinal


joint, vertical joint will be cut during the pavement works on the rehab
bridge. At the end of operations, tapering will be provided at both
abutment ends for finishing.

4.14 Compaction shall be carried out by used of compactors mentioned


above or other equivalent equipments.

4.15 The proposed rolling pattern is as followings;


i) 2 passes of rolling using tandem roller without vibrating compaction
ii) 2 passes of rolling using tandem roller with vibrating compaction
iii) 8 passes of rolling using pneumatic tyre roller
iv) Finally, 2 passes of rolling using tandem roller without vibrating
compaction for finishing surface

4.16 Rolling shall always commence from lower to the higher side of the laid
area. The minimum rolling temperature shall be kept as not less than
110C.

4.17 The surface of the ACWC shall be finished to the grade and line as
required by the S.E.

4.18 No coring is allowed but samples from plant need to be sent for testing
at Geolab.

4.19 Upon completion of the ACWC layer, joint survey shall be carried out to
check for compliance with the specified requirements.

4.20 On completion of rehab track the necessary longitudinal joint (T angle)


to be installed and the existing premix on new track shall be cut vertical
and primed before commencing the premix in rehab track.

5.0 QUALITY CONTROL PROCEDURE

All testing shall follow the procedure laid out in the Project Inspection &
Test Plan.

Core samples shall be taken within 24hours of laying and compacting


the ACWC to determine the thickness of the compacted layer of mix and
to check the Marshall density and bitumen content of the mix to ensure
comply to the mix design.

6.0 HEALTH, SAFETY AND ENVIROMENT

6.1 Work will be carried out in accordance with the Project Safety Plan.

6.2 Provide PPE to all workers including safety helmet, vest, etc.

6.3 Inspect all machinery at site and ensure that it has competent
certificate and is safe to operate.

7.0 TRACK POSSESION

Not required.

8.0 SUMMARY OF FORMS

All the relevant QA/QC forms will be used when required.
