This method statement describes the method and procedures for


launching the prestressed I-20 beams at span 1 (Abut 1 to Pier 1) at
RB 014 : (JALAN TAPAH – TELUK INTAN). Beams for span 3 will be
launched at a later stage.

The launching layout and other relevant information on machinery


and equipment used in this work are included.

2.0 MATERIALS

2.1 Prestressed “I” Beams

The prestressed “I” Beams must achieve the required design


strength prior to the launching activities. Test cube results should
be submitted to the Supervising Engineer prior to the launching
activities to ensure the 28 days required strength had been
achieved.

The permanent position of the I-beams sitting on the cross head


and abutment shall be marked before launching activities started.

4.0 METHOD

4.1 Work Access And Area

 The working access and platform shall be levelled and


compacted to form a firm ground. The pipe culvert installed
below the platform will not be subjected to crane and beam
loading as the outrigger of the crane will not be placed over
the culvert.

 Steel plate shall be provided if necessary wherever heavy


machine operating at the soft ground.

4.2 Launching Sequence And Methodology

 Audit survey shall be carried out to confirm the top level of


crosshead and abutment where “I” beams rest.

 The 'I' beams will be transported from casting yard to


designed location by trailers.

 For this launching, 2 units of 45 tonnes mobile crane will be


used to load the beam onto the trailers at the casting yard.

 The supporting structure including epoxy plinth shall have


reached the required strength and acceptable to the Resident
Engineer before beam launching.

 All relevant quality control records including beam hogging


and bowing report for the beams will be submitted before
launching

 The rubber bearing pads shall be placed to the position


marked by the surveyor prior to launching activities.

 For launching of this span, the “I” beams shall be transported


to the existing road between abutment A1 and pier P1.
Traffic flow on the existing road shall be stopped for about 15
minutes during the launching of each beam. The ‘I’ beam
shall than be lifted up by 1 no. 45 tonne crane at P1 and 1
no. 170 tonne crane at A1 and placed across the span. This
procedure and sketch is enclosed as Appendix A1.

 Two general workers will be designated on each side of the


pier crossbeam and abutment to guide the 'I' beams to the
correct position.

 The 'I' beams shall be launched onto the bearings centre.

5.0 QUALITY CONTROL PROCEDURE

Not applicable

6.0 HEALTH, SAFETY AND ENVIRONMENT

6.1 Working Hour


The beams shall be launched during the day . The existing traffic
flow shall be stopped for about 15 minutes for the launching of
each beam. Two flagmen with high visibility vest and sufficient
traffic warning signs will be provided at the designated location
to control the traffic.

6.2 Regulations
All site activities shall comply strictly with KTM regulations and
requirements. Before commencement of works all relevant staff
will be briefed and trained to comply with KTMB regulations. All
staff will also be familiar with the Construction Crisis Team’s
Handbook.

6.3 Launching Safety Briefing


A safety briefing will be conducted by the launcher prior to
beam launching to ensure that all people involved are familiar
with the works (Designated Launcher will be fully in charge
during the launching activity). The safety officer with knowledge
of the launching works will supervise the safety aspect of the
whole launching activity. Before starting the works, this safety
officer will brief the workers on the general hazards of beam
launching activities.

6.4 Equipment Checks


The safety officer will check and ensure that all cranes are with
valid PMA and fully operational and that there are no
irregularities prior to the launching. The launching will be halted

if any irregularities are observed. Pre-Lift Checklist Crane


Operation is attached in Appendix 2.

6.5 Safety Pre-caution After Launching


All beams shall be braced immediately after launching works is
completed to avoid any accident while waiting for the
subsequent activities. Beams will be braced using extreme load
case as per calculation and sketch attached in Appendix 3.
Adequate timber wedges, temporary welding or other supports
shall also be provided to ensure the I-beams remain stable on
bridge bearing pads.

Sufficient safety netting will be installed to protect the road


from falling debris.

Upon completion of beam launching, works on diaphragm


beams shall be completed within 7 days, with first beam
completed by 5th day.

6.6 General Safety


All workers are to wear High Visibility Vest (Orange colour),
safety helmet and safety shoes within KTMB Right Of Way
(ROW). All safety issues will be governed by the DRB-HICOM’s
Safety And Health Plan. DRB-HICOM procedure for heavy lifting
attached in Appendix 4 will be adhered to. The crane operator
must possess a valid certificate of competency on crane
operation.

The area shall be barricaded from construction equipment,


machinery and general public.

6.7 Environment Issues


The Environmental Management Plan will be adhered to strictly
on site.

7.0 TRACK POSSESSION

Track possession is not required.
