Having seen the conventional funnel in large scale operations for products in BYJU'S, and an inverted funnel that starts with free offerings focused on the customer's problems for Design Crescendo gigs, there are a few things that I've picked up about product and service marketing in general. When you're dealing with direct-response and bottom-of-the-funnel marketing, it makes more sense to promote your offer than your product. This is where you drive people into demos, consultations, audits, etc. Often, smaller units start here, and then expand to the middle and top as time and budget allow. The reason why at some point the expansion to other parts of the funnel is essential is because marketing only your offer isn't easily scalable. There are only so many prospects "in-market" at any given time, and at some point, you have to invest in generating demand rather than just capturing it with offer marketing. Customers are no longer loyal to brands! Yes, with over 600 D2C brands in India, consumer behavior is evolving. Brands that prioritize pushing sales over creative engagement and problem-solving risk a short lifespan. That's exactly what I learned last week in an interactive session with Mandeep Singh Bhatia, founder of Wellspring Consumer Private Limited and the man behind Paper Boat's growth, on building and running #D2C businesses 😊 Here are my key takeaways from the session:👇 1. Be resourceful, utilize low-cost options and outsource tasks to keep initial costs ‘variable’. 2. There’s correct timing for everything, don't overspend on brand marketing before achieving PMF. 3. Yuvraj Singh’s Yuvraj Singh Foundation (YouWeCan) recently faced mixed responses to a breast cancer awareness ad using oranges as a metaphor for breasts. This campaign, featured in Delhi Metro, aimed to raise awareness in a visually impactful way but received criticism from some viewers. This outrage caused a spark in the conversations on social media (~4k). There were mixed topics around which the foundation was criticised. Like, 1. Euphemism  2. Objectification  3. Lack of sensitivity Despite knowing the sensitivity of the topic brand used oranges as a metaphor. Seemed strange. As a recovery method brand should: 1. Clarify Intentions: Clearly communicate the campaign’s purpose, such as raising awareness on a serious health issue, and explain the creative choices to bridge understanding. 2. Understand Feedback: Use social listening to gather feedback 3. Focus on Positives: Highlight the campaign’s impact, like increased awareness or screening participation. 4. Stay Consistent with Values: Reaffirm the brand’s commitment to social causes and health advocacy. #SocialImpact #BreastCancerAwareness

The 90s and early 2000s ad agency account executive are fortunate in many ways. Account management folks in the ad agency environment of the 90s and early 2000s learnt a lot from peers, seniors and clients. My take on various ways in which we benefited: Lots to learn from Manager, Boss and Super Boss. They led from the front whether it was selling creative, recommending strategy or fighting the good fight. Many had great persuasive skills in communication and ‘selling’ the idea or an investment plan. Some of them gave it back to clients when they ill-treated some of the agency juniors. They commanded respect from client-in-chief. When I got into a managerial role, I felt I was a shade of the bosses I had - Importance of writing skills. Those were the days of the memo. And written creative briefs. Media requisitions. All of it had to be written cogently. Seniors invested in writing & presentation skills workshops. So we learnt the art & importance of writing well.  - Presentation skills. We had to ‘sell’ campaigns, scripts, annual plans and such like aside from pitches. We observed how some of the great Creative Directors ‘planned’ and sold their ideas - it was mesmerising  - Cost of mistakes. PPTs were made on 35-mm slides or acetate sheets on Overhead Projectors (look it up on Google). So a typo discovered after the slide was made, meant running to the vendor again. An error in a printed ad (I have had my share) meant a make-good which went from the agency’s pocket. Checking copy word-for-word against an original or through someone else was common. So prevention is better than cure was practiced. What else would you add if you had your advertising basics from back then? #advertising

The inaugural edition of Shiprocket Shivir in 2023 was a momentous occasion. With zero prior experience in-house of organising a physical event of this scale, there was obvious anxiety whether we will be successful in our pursuit to create an Industry leading initiative. I remember multiple discussions with Saahil,our CEO, where he continuosly expressed concern if the event would see an empty hall and I constantly kept saying just one thing - don't worry, all is well. It was a conviction based on my prior experiences having organised multiple such events as well as a strong belief in the power of what we were trying to build - India's largest conclave designed for SMBs looking to learn and grow their businesses. 5 takeaways for every marketer + business strategist from Rama Bijapurkar's Lilliput Land: 1. India is a sum of micro markets. Each market itself is a large enough opportunity from a TAM point of view   2. Business models need to be a sum of parts and truly be Made for India, where money has to work harder and rotate faster. Which means, there is no V0 of unit economics; it is likely to vary from cohort to cohort 3. Business strategy at its worst is when you operate in averages. Some parts of your strategy will be high volume at low value; some will be low volume at high value. You can't choose one or another, you have to do both 4. If you want to build a large, defensible business in India, you need to build on customer truths not distribution channels. There is a reason why most D2C companies have capped their turnover at 300-500CR; they optimised for algos of distribution channels vs customers  Related: Brands which wait for customers to upgrade never build long term value 5. Women are a consumption force to reckon with. But understanding this customer base needs one to put system 2 thinking to use.

Of advertising publications and portals. Since my college days I have had a fascination for magazine design, content and overall presentation. I used to collect them too - if I came across some rare issues. Somehow great magazine covers, feature presentations and ads in them were all attractive for me. I liked newspapers too. My love for print advertising kind of manifested in that medium. When I joined advertising, AdAge, Adweek, Campaign were regular reads. Among Indian brands I used to love A&M, (thanks Sreekant Khandekar) which was a pioneer of sorts back then. Since we did not have a 24x7 digital feed from news portals there was something to look forward to in print magazines dedicated to the advertising business. Such media brands covered campaign news, presented views on industry trends, had interviews with ad legends and so on. In the digital age, portals dedicated to the ad business have it tough when it comes to product differentiation and the reason to pay for a subscription, or even just a registration. Portals dedicated to advertising can be grouped as: - Listing of new campaigns: simple proposition; great source of new ads. Like Ads of the World (now part of Clio Network) and so many others.Some just list the work with credits, while others like More About Advertising have commentary on the work. The latter is more individual driven and depends on ads & subscription/donation for revenue  - Traditional print brands which have turned digital: AdAge, Adweek, Campaign et al. They have ’stories’ covering new campaigns, opinion columns (mostly behind a paywall).  - New age digital brands with global or local perspective: The Drum (UK), Mumbrealla, Muse by Clio and many others. Some cover marketing & media business trends & news. Many simply publish ad agency PR handouts about people or account movements. Some just embed the YouTube video of an ad and expect the reader to register to watch it. Almost all of them are crammed with intrusive advertising as that’s an important revenue source. Some may have brand tie ups too. But there’s hardly any brand which gives a solid incentive to register & read, forget paying for an article or opinion column. Guest articles mostly promote the business of the author. Among the marketing magazines I find Marketing Week UK with some great free articles (including some of Mark Ritson) and an incentive to subscribe for a premium tier based on the topic - and creating a perception that there is some value to be gained. That is the trick - convincing that it is ‘worth’ shelling out money.  #advertising #media

Back in the 90s', Ad Club Bombay's awards used to have a category called 'Best Continuing Campaign'. In a way it was a reflection of the times back then - a 'thematic' campaign which used to run on traditional media for months, even years on end. Very few brands - especially among the new age brands seem to adopt this strategy. The pressure to be ever present across media, platforms & formats coupled with having to associate one's brand with every occasion or news cycle results in many messages without a connecting thread.  #advertising

92 percent of industry leaders in India say that artificial intelligence (AI) is fundamentally altering everything they know about customer experience (CX). Additionally, 89 percent believe AI is driving an unprecedented transformation in CX, a recent report by Zendesk, a software as a service (SaaS) company has revealed. Another key insight in this report is that while AI may help CX organizations manage their work with smaller teams, it will curate more efficient, personalized, and intelligent experiences for both customers and agents. The report is applicable in the context of the pharmaceutical industry as well where marketing efforts are increasingly becoming digital.
