Who exactly is losing market share in the hotly contest grocery commerce? I thought it must be the now-not-so modern retail, but I'm not so sure. Zepto raised $665 Mn at a valuation of $3.6 Bn, and is in talks to raise $250 Mn more. And their cofounder and CEO Aadit Palicha recently commented that they can beat DMart - Avenue Supermarts Ltd on GMV in the next 12-18 months. Swiggy Instamart also is growing, and Blinkit is likely to be more valuable than their owner Zomato itself - so they are all doing well, even if Dunzo isn't. Sure, no idea what JioMart Digital is doing, but deep pockets. Same with Tata Digital and their weird assortment forced to converge on Neu. bigbasket.com is trying to unlearn and relearn, and it just might. And Flipkart Grocery and Amazon Fresh are also upping their game - launching faster deliveries, discounts, improved fill rates, and selection. So I wonder if it is the modern-trade players? The likes of More Retail Private Limited, Spencer's Retail, STAR BAZAR, and SPAR Retail that are suffering? The nearest Spencer's to me is definitely a sore sight, now reduced to a shell of it's former glory - I think they aren't even replenishing inventory now. And we all know what happened to Big Bazaar - Future Retail. But Dmart itself isn't doing half bad - with pareto presence in just 23 cities, and no presence in UP (except NCR), Bihar, and West Bengal, they have considerable headroom, still. And they haven't yet quite solved for ecommerce, so while The Ken says that they are lost, they may find their way, eventually? I also don't think that the real consumption is growing, if at all, it may even shrink with the K-growth. Thus, some one _is_ losing share. And if it is not modern trade, then is it the regional chains? The single kiranas? The corner-store? The hand-cart? I'm not entirely sure because this data is hard to organize, and get. Streetz boasted an impressive repeat rate of 22% where 10% of the users had ordered more than 3 times. In just 8 months Streetz crossed Rs 70L in GMV of business done on the platform. Streetz grew by 100X in just 13 weeks of launch acquiring customers at below Rs 250 CAC. 🚀🚀 BUT, 1. Healthy Cash flow is the most crucial aspect of an early stage startup. Being frugal is always good. 🤑 2. With discounts you can drive customer orders but you can only ensure loyalty by being consistent in your promises to customers. 🌞 3. India is a very price sensitive market and the price is more important then convenience for a large part of India, a general Indian customer mostly makes purchases rationally, evaluating many options. 🎈 4. Switching costs for customers are very low in today's Hyper competitive market. 🙌🏻 5. Product assortment on a marketplace is P0. The last thing you'll want is a customer dropping because of unavailability of a particular product. 🔑 6. Yes, customers are tolerant if tech/App is average as long as you meet the promises you make as a brand.💟 7. Historic data doesn't always show the right picture for future projections as there are too many variables at play at any given time and unless all external+internal variables are accounted for. 🎦 8. The startup world moves very fast and the agility of founder and team to changing circumstances is a very important asset. 🌊 9. There's nothing wrong in building slowly and steadily as long as your loyal user base is growing consistently and cash is depleting at a lower rate compared to increasing revenues. ❤️ 10. As a founder and team accept the fact that there are going to be many mistakes. Just don't repeat the same mistake twice.❌ 11. Your team is a reflection of you and as a founder it's very important to lead by example and be a coach rather than use the dictator approach in leadership.⛷️ 12. The most important thing which can make you and break you is your attitude. Daily dose of positive thinking really helps.💯 13. When you're a startup due to constraints and uncertainty there would be many dark days. The light of Hope should always shine. 🌄 14. Q-Commerce overtaking traditional e-commerce? Currently we are seeing a big boom in terms of the different SKUs being sold in Quick commerce apps like Zepto, Blinkit, etc. - Atomberg Technologies 's fans - Sony's PS5 - Samosa, Chai and what not - Digital Gold from Jar! Zepto is in talks to raise $300m for its broader ecommerce play. While Swiggy is preparing to file for an IPO this year, incumbent Flipkart is readying its entry into quick commerce. Zomato has invested $240 million in Blinkit over the last one year. Taking a step back, the lines between quick commerce and traditional e commerce have started to become increasingly blurred with QCom pretty much catering to every needs! Also, multiple reports suggest that QCommerce can potentially become bigger than traditional e commerce in India!  Case in point : According to Goldman Sachs, the valuation of Blinkit is greater than Zomato's core food delivery biz! Non-grocery boom in Q-Commerce: Categories including beauty, toys, health and electronics are witnessing robust sales growth on quick-commerce platforms overall. While the overall base for the new categories is still small, aggressive expansion by these players is starting to ensure a dominant presence for these categories. Plus AOV is higher which also comes with better margins, making it a win-win! Case in point: Zepto - 2x sales MoM in segments such as toys and electronics accessories - Beauty category expanded 3x QoQ - ~15% of Zepto’s $1.2bn annualised gross sales currently comes from non-grocery products (Source: Goldman Sachs) For several D2C quick commerce has become the fastest growth channel as well as the platform with highest customer engagement This is definitely a positive for the consumers and the Q-Commerce players, but is everything on the up and up?   As the demand for space on quick-commerce platforms skyrockets, niche D2C cos in segments like FMCG, beauty and personal care, and health and fitness are agreeing to pay a 30-45% commission on sales, besides shelling out on advertising and discounting on these Q-Com platforms. On top of the commissions, brands are also regularly spending around 20% of their total sales on ads on the platforms, and discounting their products by about 20-25% (totaling 60-70% revenue!). This is in stark contrast to the 10-20% commission that large FMCG cos pay these platforms reflecting the intense competition for visibility. The brand's scale and comparison with competitors are crucial considerations when it comes to new listings. On the positive side, smaller D2C brands have seen 40-60% total revenue coming from Q-Commerce compared to ~10-20% from traditional ecommerce, which is surprising! Essentially, Q-com currently has a BIIIG Bargaining power against new D2C brands and can essentially make or break their businesses! Blinkit's Strategy to Maximize Revenue 👇 In FY 23, they reported Rs 724.2 crore revenue, a 3-fold growth as compared to FY 22! Just when everyone had written off 10-Minute Delivery as an unnecessary service, the numbers speak otherwise. Blinkit is no longer your average last-mile grocery delivery platform, over the last year, it has horizontally diversified its products. What started off as delivering your everyday essentials now has Novels, Kitchen Appliances, Home Appliances, Smart Watches, Clothes, Home Decor, Gold Coins, and whatnot 🤯 Let's not forget iPhones! 📱 It is no longer competing with your Kirana Store, they are competing with your Supermarkets, your electronic retailers, local jewelers, Mobile phone retailers, and most of the hyperdomestic retail market. In my opinion, subscriptions for the mass market does not work in dating apps. For a niche audience maybe. But definitely not for the mass market Let me explain When we take a subscription for an OTT platform, we know that there is a large content library that we will get access to. But when I take a subscription for a dating app, it is a roll of the dice - akin to gambling. Because I do not know whether I will find a love partner or not by paying the subscription. Hence in English dating apps only 3-4% users buy a subscription Contrast this with the approach that we have taken at flutrr . We have Microtransactions priced between Rs. 30-70 and bundles of such microtransactions ( at a discount) . In each of these Microtransactions, the user is very clear what he/she will get if he/ she pays. There is no ambiguity and know false expectations . Therefore more than 18% of our users buy these Microtransactions. And this fact coupled with our very low Cost of Acquisition will not only help us reach profitability but also help us scale with minimal capital Another benefit of this approach is that users can use the app without buying Microtransactions immediately. Therefore , their lifetime and longevity on the App goes up giving us the opportunity to convert these users to paying customers in the future. If at any point of time we decide to seriously monetise eyeballs thru advertising, this will help us immensely In fact, we have tied up with CouponDunia to offer our users free branded coupons. When they redeem the coupons we get a revenue share. The user is happy to get an offer without having to suffer intrusive ads. And we make money too Building for Bharat is about creating a win-win proposition. It is a difficult game. But hugely scalable and profitable. And in this Jio leads the way.

In last 3 months - I have seen lot of adtech/agencies founder and team members reach out across markets in China, South East Asia, Middle East and India. Largely within the programmatic and affiliate ecosystem - 2 trends are driving compression with revenue down 50-70% YoY. 1. Funding trends - Edtech, Gaming and Fintech seeing pressure moving from aggressive customer acquisitions to quality of users 2. commoditisation of tech leading to lower entry barrier for leaner teams, agencies to eat into adtech margins and build direct relationships with publishers eg MMPs, tracking softwares etc Unfortunately biggest mistake most of these businesses are doing in such times are launching full stack agencies - trying to build exclusivity on advertiser side to improve access to supply. Problems for success being 1. They are not building completely new teams with cost structures, capabilities and incentives to build agency business to operate in single % of media spend margins with transparency and execution efficiency for scale instead - going after advertiser accounts with margin management or rebates built in day zero and mentality of 3-4 quarter journey of advertiser built with them. 2. Not investing in building capabilities which are advertiser first eg Shopify or Cloud services implementation to Data sciences practises which are tools for digital transformation - with innovating business models. Big agencies are thriving as they have invested a lot in capability set and moving on from being just media agencies but to build solutioning capabilities for clients and different practises are reflective of brands acquisition velocity this enable + margins. I want to clarify adtech is not going away, affiliate is not dying. Its interesting trend across US and EU on how Programmatic, Affiliate and KOL ecosystem is coming together for brands - opening up more set of opportunities then every before.
