Pathways to Success: Celebrating the Achievements of Our Graduates 🎉 🎓 Introducing Muyan Li: We are excited to highlight the accomplishments of our University of the West of Scotland graduates. This week, we celebrate the journey of Muyan Li, a recent graduate from the UWS Web and Mobile Development Programme. Muyan reflects on the programme as being instrumental in shaping valuable skills, particularly in developing practical applications and fostering strong problem-solving abilities. The hands-on projects were key in preparing for the next stage of a successful career. In Muyan’s words: “The programme provided me with invaluable skills and knowledge, particularly in developing practical applications and fostering problem-solving abilities. The projects were instrumental in preparing me for the next stage of my career.” Looking ahead, Muyan is excited to be pursuing an MSc in Computer Science at the University of Nottingham, marking a significant milestone in both academic and professional development. WHAT ARE A-LEVELS? A-Levels (Advanced Level qualifications) are a subject-based qualification for students aged 16 and above. They are usually studied over two years, leading to qualifications recognised for entrance to higher education institutes in the UK and many others worldwide. Most higher education institutes require a minimum of 3 subjects. Although they are a UK qualification, schools across the world offer A Levels. In addition, most universities and Higher Education institutes recognise A Levels as a suitable entry qualification. WHY ARE A-LEVELS IMPORTANT? A-level results are essential for prospective undergraduate students looking to gain entry into UK universities. These results offer admissions officers a reliable and uniform assessment of a student's academic skills and future potential. Whether your goal is to study at a renowned university or a specific program, your A-level grades play a significant role in the admissions process. It is crucial to recognize the significance of a well-rounded application in addition to A-levels. Numerous universities place value on extracurricular activities, personal statements, and letters of recommendation, alongside academic accomplishments. Achieving a balance between academic excellence and participation in clubs, sports, or volunteer work can enhance the appeal of your application - most especially for aspiring medical students. Scottish applicants are being encouraged to apply to NIHR Programme Grants for Applied Research (PGfAR) Competition 45 which is inviting Stage 1 applications for research proposals to develop individual programmes of applied health research. The PGfAR is offering the opportunity to develop and advance health and care research careers. Applicants can now include funding for research capacity development, across all stages of the academic career pathway (i.e., from internships to Masters to PhD, to post-doctoral). Applications that include career development for methodological disciplines are particularly welcome. Research funded through a Programme Grant typically consists of an interrelated group of high quality projects focused on a coherent theme and hence require multidisciplinary approaches, including clinical, health economics, statistics, qualitative and behavioural sciences, to ensure that research objectives can be met. The amount awarded and the length of the funding period will depend on the nature of the proposed work, in particular whether or not the proposal includes a substantial powered trial. Applications to PGfAR are made with the support of an NHS body and other providers of NHS services in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. If an application is successful, a contract will be placed with that organisation for delivery of the research and all funds for the research will be paid to the NHS organisation or other provider of NHS services.
