We risk limiting ourselves to strings others pull on our behalf at their own time. Great nuggets here for poultry production
Good preparation in commercial poultry production is a key factor in achieving a good performance at the end of the batch. Below are a few general key points to note in preparation for chick placement and brooding in open-sided poultry houses in Zimbabwe: # Cleaning and disinfection should be done to the best standard, and observing the resting period between batches is crucial, as it is essential for the overall success of the next batch. Hygiene swabs are crucial to check the level and standard of cleaning and disinfection. (Resting at least 14 days for concrete floors and 21 days for earth floors). # A good biosecurity plan must be in place and should be observed at all times. # Pre-heating should be done least 24-48hours depending on the season, area, housing system and heating system type, to achieve the right floor temperature range of, 28°C to 30°C. In-house temperature range should be 32°C to 34°C, reducing by roughly 3°C every week until supplementary heating is no longer needed, with a relative humidity range of 50%-70%. # Adequate bedding/litter material, with the right depth is essential, e.g. grass 5-10cm depth when compacted, depending on the season. # Good lighting is key, to avoid dark spots in the brooder. A lighting program should be observed, with adequate dark hours to allow the birds to rest. Lighting intensity is also critical. It should not be too bright or too dim in the brooder. (General guideline;- you should be able to comfortably read a newspaper in the fowl run). # Adequate brooder size, of 35birds/ m2 in winter and 30birds/m2 in summer. It is advisable to add an extra 0.2m2/ bird to accommodate space for feeders and drinkers without compromising bird space. Space expansion should be done timely as the birds grow. # Adequate feeding and drinking equipment is required. 80% feed coverage is recommended, to ensure quick feed intake for gut development and good crop fills in the first 24hours. General recommendations for feeders and drinkers using Poltek chicken equipment; Day 1-7 -33birds per chick tray/fount. -When feed paper is used, it is advisable to remove it by day 3-4 latest, to avoid feed contamination and wastage as the birds grow older. Day 7- maturity (50-60 birds per big feeders and drinkers). (nipples 1 per 10-12birds). These are general guidelines and it is always advisable to consult with a poultry technical expert for farm specific guidelines. #Happy farming to Zimbabwean poultry farmers.
