WHAT ARE A-LEVELS? A-Levels (Advanced Level qualifications) are a subject-based qualification for students aged 16 and above. They are usually studied over two years, leading to qualifications recognised for entrance to higher education institutes in the UK and many others worldwide. Most higher education institutes require a minimum of 3 subjects. Although they are a UK qualification, schools across the world offer A Levels. In addition, most universities and Higher Education institutes recognise A Levels as a suitable entry qualification. WHY ARE A-LEVELS IMPORTANT? A-level results are essential for prospective undergraduate students looking to gain entry into UK universities. These results offer admissions officers a reliable and uniform assessment of a student's academic skills and future potential. What’s Important in Higher Education Admissions? (Part 3: Study Requirements) We surveyed Higher Education experts from 14 countries to gain insights into the future of student admissions. Most respondents work in admissions departments or as professors and lecturers. Here’s what we found regarding the competencies most important for academic success (see the full results in the table below): Top 7 Competencies for Academic Success (1 = not important, 4 = very important): 1. Critical Thinking (3.50) 2. Verbal Skills (3.50) 3. Concentration Ability (3.48) 4. Achievement Motivation (3.38) 5. General Intelligence (3.35) 6. Social Competence (3.29) 7. Quantitative Skills (3.21) When looking at different fields of study, the results align with expectations. Here are some examples: · Quantitative skills and math knowledge are more critical for STEM fields (3.73 and 3.40). · Social competence is more important for Medical Studies and Social Sciences (3.38 and 3.50). · Science knowledge is key for Medical Studies but less relevant for Economics (3.08 vs. 1.70). Notably, Critical Thinking stands out as one of the most important skills across all disciplines. It’s also frequently mentioned on “future skills” lists, making it a key element to consider in admissions processes. Good News for Admissions Departments: The majority of these competencies, such as critical thinking, verbal skills, and quantitative reasoning, can be reliably measured through admission tests. However, assessing personality and social competence, which are also important for student success, remains more challenging to evaluate with traditional psychometric methods. #Copied Graduate admission process in USA. This post is for those who want to learn about the graduate admission process of US universities Having gone through the graduate application process for US universities for two years, I thought I should share my knowledge in the group so that those who are in darkness can benefit. It's a multi-step process. This is how to apply to US universities. 1. Search the programs of your interest in different universities. A good resource is the US News and Rankings website, where you'll find all US national universities. On this website, choose your area of study and a list of schools will appear. My suggestion would be check universities with a lower ranking (if you don't have excellent profile) I made a mistake applying to a few top schools and didn't get accepted. Here's the link: https://lnkd.in/d_yguwVg 2. Note the requirements of your program and make a list of universities (Word or Excel sheet). In the list, include details like IELTS/TOEFL and GRE requirements, research areas of the faculty, any faculty members whose research you find intriguing, and the graduate coordinator or director's email address. 3. When you can fulfill a program's requirements and your research interests match faculty's research, email the graduate coordinator or director to express your interest and to ask specific questions. You should also ask whether those particular faculty members will be advising students and check whether the school provides application fee waiver. 4. If a particular faculty member will be advising students in the upcoming intake, email them directly to show interest in their research and which area you'd like to work in. Write a short email that addresses only that faculty and doesn't seem like being sent to hundreds of researchers. 5. Start working on your SOP (research proposal if it's required, though most schools only require only SOP). Also, keep emailing professors and shortlist universities. If your list has 30 universities, you'd shortlist 7-10. 6. Save up for the application fee. You should definitely apply to those schools that provide a waiver, but for the rest you'll need to pay. Application fee is usually between $75 and $170. 7. English proficiency is a requirement for US universities, so you must take IELTS or TOEFL. Some schools also accept Duolingo. While many schools have waived GRE requirement, there are some programs that require it. So if you can't take GRE, target those programs that don't require it, but English proficiency is a requirement. As I said, I wasn't accepted into any university this year, I'll be applying for Fall 2025. Application for fall intake start in September and most deadlines are in December and January. Remember, you must have taken or be willing to take IELTS/TOEFL and have a bachelor/master's degree to apply for PhD.

Pleased to see a 14% increase in Chinese undergraduate applications for early deadline courses through UCAS. It's a strong start for what's set to be a busy and competitive cycle for universities and accommodation providers. What’s Important in Higher Education Admissions? (Part 1: Goals and Methods) We surveyed experts from 14 countries (Austria, Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, India, Mexico, Netherlands, South Africa, Spain, Switzerland, UAE, UK, USA) to explore the future of student admissions in Higher Education. Most respondents work in admissions departments or serve as professors and lecturers. Here are some initial findings: Top 5 Objectives of Admission Procedures: - Select the best applicants (87%) - Identify qualified candidates (54%) - Reduce dropout rates (44%) - Discover hidden talent (44%) - Increase diversity (41%) Top 5 Tools for Selection: - Grades/Certificates (81%) - Interviews (81%) - Admission tests of a provider (52%) - Professional experience (38%) - Institution-specific admission tests (37%) - Motivation letters (31%) One of the most surprising findings for me was the continued approval of motivation letters. Despite their historically low predictive validity, the ease of using AI tools to craft them, and the time-intensive nature of reviewing them, they remain a favored method for 31 percent. PRIORITY DEADLINES FOR MS/PhD APPLICATIONS. If you are applying for MS/PhD admissions and want to be considered for funding (Assistantship), submitting your application (application and all references) before the priority deadline is key. In US university MS/PhD applications, a Priority Deadline (also known as Priority Consideration Deadline or Funding Deadline) is the deadline by which applicants must submit their applications to be considered for: 1️⃣Funding (e.g., graduate assistantships, scholarships, teaching assistantships) 2️⃣Priority consideration for admission 3️⃣Limited spots in highly competitive programs. Meeting the Priority Deadline increases chances of securing funding and admission. Applications received after the Priority Deadline may still be considered, but funding opportunities may be limited. Some programs may only review applications received by the Priority Deadline. Priority deadline is different from final deadline. For 60% Universities, priority deadline is December 1st. About 20% Universities have the priority deadline at the end of December and a few at the end of January. Priority deadlines vary with programmes. One University may have different deadlines for different programmes and departments.

Once again, beyond basic requirements like transcripts, tests, research & personal statements, following steps can maximize your chances of successful admission in the US graduate schools. 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗳𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗼𝗿𝘀 Connect with professors by email whose research aligns with your interests well before application deadlines. Show genuine excitement & understanding of their work. Visit their websites, Google Scholar, & get strong familiarity with their recent research. 𝐓𝐚𝐢𝐥𝐨𝐫𝐞𝐝 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 Highlight connections between your research experience & their specific research questions. Clearly articulate your research goals & how they fit within their lab. Demonstrate how your skills & knowledge bridge gaps in their current projects. Avoid sending generic emails; personalize each communication according to the professor's research. 𝐒𝐡𝐨𝐰𝐜𝐚𝐬𝐞 𝐀𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬 Highlight your achievements that make you stand out from others. Showcase accomplishments relevant to their work, including publications/presentations & honors/awards. 𝐌𝐢𝐥𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐧𝐞𝐬 𝐏𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 Start with application deadlines & work backwards to set milestones for each component of your application package. Ensure you have secured awards, honors, publications, & presentations showcasing your academic & research excellence. Participate in professional conferences & workshops to demonstrate initiative & passion for research. Without adequate funding, they will not be able to accept new students. 𝐋𝐢𝐦𝐢𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐒𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐞: Professors, even if they have funding, they might not have the capacity to take on more graduate students in their lab. 𝐑𝐞𝐭𝐢𝐫𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐨𝐫 𝐋𝐚𝐛 𝐂𝐥𝐨𝐬𝐮𝐫𝐞: Some professors may be nearing retirement & are in the process of closing down their labs. In such cases, they will not accept new students, regardless of their qualifications. By approaching professors who have the capacity & resources to support new students increases your chances of receiving a positive response to your inquiries & securing admission.
