Scottish applicants are being encouraged to apply to NIHR Programme Grants for Applied Research (PGfAR) Competition 45 which is inviting Stage 1 applications for research proposals to develop individual programmes of applied health research. The PGfAR is offering the opportunity to develop and advance health and care research careers. Applicants can now include funding for research capacity development, across all stages of the academic career pathway (i.e., from internships to Masters to PhD, to post-doctoral). Applications that include career development for methodological disciplines are particularly welcome. Research funded through a Programme Grant typically consists of an interrelated group of high quality projects focused on a coherent theme and hence require multidisciplinary approaches, including clinical, health economics, statistics, qualitative and behavioural sciences, to ensure that research objectives can be met. The amount awarded and the length of the funding period will depend on the nature of the proposed work, in particular whether or not the proposal includes a substantial powered trial. Applications to PGfAR are made with the support of an NHS body and other providers of NHS services in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. If an application is successful, a contract will be placed with that organisation for delivery of the research and all funds for the research will be paid to the NHS organisation or other provider of NHS services. The submission deadline for applications is 13:00 on 31 July 2024. Read more 👉 https://lnkd.in/erhEimsS

NIHR Awards £33.2m To Inspire Students Into Research The National Institute for Health and Care Research has funded universities across 12 regions in England £33.2m to provide research training and engagement programmes for students and early career professionals. The funding is for three years. It supports institutions to deliver engagement programmes to attract people into research careers. It also offers fully-funded Research Masters places to train those new to research. The funding is part of the new INSIGHT: Inspiring Students into Research scheme. This aims to help students and those at early career stages to access the full range of research careers. This includes from research delivery to academic. Professor Waljit Dhillo, Dean of NIHR Academy, said: "We know how important early exposure to research is for helping students and early career professionals develop the knowledge and skills needed to join the research workforce and build successful research careers in the future. "The INSIGHT programme will offer over 300 funded Research Masters places per year and provide engagement activities that have the potential to excite and capture the imagination of students at an early stage in their career. "I’m delighted that we can invest in our next generation of researchers in this way, and show students all of the benefits that research roles and careers have to offer." The scheme will provide over 300 Masters places available per year across 12 regions. It aims to build research capacity across England making sure competitive research training opportunities are available to all regardless of geography. Each region has been awarded up to 30 masters studentships per year. The regional programmes are open to students and recent graduates from professions without much exposure to research during their professional training. This will broaden access to research training. It will also help create a more diverse research workforce. It is open to students and recent graduates from: - registered healthcare professions (not including doctors and dentists) - social work professions - public health professions Innovative engagement activities will promote the benefits of research careers within health and care. This includes careers combining research and practice. Activities are wide ranging. Examples include workshops, networking, mentoring programmes and showcase events. Find out more about the INSIGHT scheme. Read More:

I am incredibly excited and grateful to announce that I have been awarded a Junior Postdoctoral Fellowship by the Fonds Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek - Vlaanderen (FWO) to continue my research journey (at Brussels Institute for Social and Population Studies)! Over the next three years, I will be investigating the health status of self-employed individuals in Belgium and Sweden! This research project is especially significant as it aims to shed light on the often overlooked area of self-employment and its implications for health outcomes. In sum, stay tuned for exciting research to come! A short abstract of the project: This research project aims to investigate the health status of self-employed individuals in Belgium and Sweden. The main objectives include examining different self-employment arrangements and their relation to health, exploring the impact of when and how self-employment emerges in individuals’ careers on their health at various stages, and assessing the moderating role of household composition and its socio-economic position in the self-employment and health relationship. Gender is a focal point, given the gendered nature of self-employment. To reach the overarching goal of conducting a comprehensive exploration of the intricate connections between self-employment and health, I will make unique linkages between administrative data sources. The project’s innovative approach involves capitalizing on the vast opportunities of using registry data, as well as exploring research avenues that have not been explored before (such as considering the health outcomes of different self-employment arrangements throughout careers). By using unique datasets covering significant portions of the self-employed in both countries, the study will provide unprecedented insights into self-employed health, addressing gaps in existing research.

Are you interested in learning more about the funding landscape for social science research in the UK? Our recently published report draws largely on published annual Higher Education Statistics Authority (HESA) research funding data between 2013/14 and 2021/22, to document the scale and trends in research funding for the social sciences across UK higher education. From analysing the data available, the report shows that in 2021/22 the social sciences sector received 8.3% of the total research funding reported by UK universities, in comparison to the medical and biological sciences sector which received 55% and the STEM sector which received 33%. Our Chief Executive, Dr Rita Gardner, said, “Social science research is fundamental to understanding and helping to mitigate many of the economic, social, place-based and environmental challenges we face in the UK, especially in terms of delivering vital insights to many critical areas of public policy. Yet in 2021/22 the social sciences sector received 8.3% of the total research funding reported by UK universities. We urge the UK Government and UKRI to review the funding of social science research with a view to narrowing the gap with the medical and biological sciences and STEM to release more of the sector’s potential in addressing many of the societal challenges we face at a local, regional, national and global scale.” Read the full report ➡ https://lnkd.in/eNyB74sW #socialsciences #researchfunding

💥 Funding plays a crucial role in supporting a PhD student throughout the academic journey ☝ I will be sharing some of my experiences of applying for funding and would like to hear some of your experiences too 🔊 Why funding I'm thrilled to be funded on a part-time basis (based on a deficit guarantee). However, I'd love to work full-time on my PhD for a period, so I’am applying for funding. On top of that, I need funding to cover expenses such as travel and catering for study participants, a mandatory research stay abroad, conference attendance and publishing costs. 💡 Writing a grant application is very time-consuming ▶ Foundations have different purposes and requirements for the content, layout and length of the application. I ensure I meet their requests by returning to their guidelines several times during the writing of the proposal. ▶ I seek feedback from my supervisors, PhD-colleagues or grant-writing professionals and make the necessary revisions and refinements based on their input to ensure it is as strong as possible before submitting the proposal. ▶ I pay close attention to grammar, spelling, and overall writing quality. A well-written proposal is more likely to capture the attention of reviewers and convey competence. 👍 About 10% succed ▶ I wrote about 15 grant applications and received a grant from the Danish Association of Occupational Therapists. I am very grateful for their grant as it enabled me to enrol as a PhD student at the University of Southern Denmark. 👎 How to handle rejections ▶ Although I feel that my research is highly relevant to healthcare practice and involves patients and healthcare clinicians in research, which is a hot topic, there is a lot of competition for limited funding, and I am always prepared for rejection. ▶ I stay motivated by sharing my experiences with my supervisors and PhD-colleagues who have had the same experiences. They are supportive and will encourage me to continue applying for funding. 🤝 My PhD The title of my PhD is: Shared decision-making facilitated by a decision aid - a clinical innovation study regarding the post-operative rehabilitation approach after a distal radius fracture.
