Skills England has formally launched After being mentioned in the King's Speech, we, along with the rest of the vocational and educational sectors, have been waiting for the details Now we have them, what are our initial thoughts 💭? Firstly, #AdultEducation in the UK and England can be complex. So, efforts to unite statutory bodies, businesses, training providers, and unions are welcome Skills England will be established in phases over the next 12 months, gradually taking over responsibilities from IfATE (Institute for Apprenticeships and Technical Education) So, it'll likely take time before we see any impact on our current systems We see the potential strengths of Skills England to be two-fold: 1️⃣ Connecting employers with the skills systems 2️⃣ Creating more cohesive pathways between current educational offerings We also hope it leaders to better regional coordination Ultimately, we are hopeful that #SkillsEngland will positively impact the Government's education agenda. Targeting interventions to meet the specific needs of a nation and more and more those of regions / Combined Authorities / Mayoral Combined Authorities is increasingly important. 'One-size fits all' interventions, solutions and products are outdated and learners, employers and, crucially, commissioning bodies want and expect more for their 💷. This creates some really interesting opportunities for so many actors in the technical and vocational education system, and some real challenges for organisations who now need to think differently to meet their customers' changing needs. Personally, I am pleased that there is increasing focus on getting the best possible deal for learners, and I'm excited to see how organisations respond to meet this. What do you think? Exciting times ahead with the launch of Skills England! The Prime Minister and Education Secretary have just announced a significant re-brand to unify the skills landscape and boost the nation’s skills. With Richard Pennycook CBE as the interim Chair, we’re set to create a more strategic and collaborative skills system. Skills shortages doubled between 2017 and 2022, making up 36% of job vacancies. Skills England aims to address these gaps and reduce reliance on overseas workers, opening up new opportunities for young people and enabling British businesses to recruit more home-grown talent. This rebrand comes at a perfect time for some educational leaders and organisations still viewing university as the only pathway to success. It’s crucial to recognise that apprenticeships and vocational training can offer equally if not more, rewarding career opportunities.
