Volvo is bucking the industry trend with strong sales growth and a significant increase in EV adoption. While many automakers are facing declining sales and slower EV uptake, Volvo Cars, a brand of the Geely Group, is reporting impressive gains. In October alone, Volvo achieved 61,686 global sales, marking a 3% increase from last year. Year-to-date figures are even stronger, with sales up 9% to nearly 623,000 units in the first ten months of 2024. Electric vehicles are a major driver of this growth. Volvo's EV sales have surged by 61% to almost 147,000 units, meaning nearly one in four Volvos sold globally is now electric. Plug-in hybrids have also gained traction, with a 13% increase to 140,000 units. By contrast, sales of mild hybrids and combustion engines declined by 5% to 336,000 units. Europe remains Volvo's largest and fastest-growing market, where sales rose 21% in October and an impressive 30% year-to-date. EV sales in Europe doubled, reaching just over 113,000 units, positioning Volvo to meet the EU’s stricter 2025 CO2 limits. Meanwhile, U.S. sales saw a modest decline of 4%, totaling just under 99,000 units, while sales in China fell 9% to 127,000 units. The good thing about a Google built-in infotainment system is that…it mirrors your Android phone. 😃 The bad thing about a Google built-in system is that…it mirrors your Android phone. 😟 If you’re a hardcore Android user, chances are you’ll love the familiar layout and the ability to download third-party apps like Spotify, Amazon Prime videos, YouTube, etc., to your car’s display. BUT you also HAVE TO click on the “I agree to the terms and conditions” when downloading these apps every. single. time. exactly how you’d have to do it on your desktop in Google Chrome. As a user, you can definitely enjoy the… ✔ Convenience ✔ Flexibility ✔ Excellent connectivity with your Gmail account ...in your car's display However, the Android OS can be a heavy system. Unlike restarting your phone, rebooting your car’s display is not as practical when it lags (sometimes). ? Why am I saying all this? Recently, I had the chance to benchmark the Volvo EX30—which happens to come with the Google built-in infotainment system. Takeaway? Volvo Group announced the FH Electric with a 600 km reach. This is made possible e.g. by a newly designed edrive axle which saves space for a bigger battery. For comparison Tesla Semi claims 800 km reach, but is more likely to be 640 km, Mercedes eActros 600 is said to have a reach of 500 km. Depending on the Volvo version, 4 to 6 batteries sum up to an overall capacity of 540 kWh. With charging power of up to 250 kW, this means the truck will need 2.5 hours for charging. The truck's charge will last for a working day. For comparison: High-end EVs have batteries with approximately 100 kWh. Volvo Cars has revised its plans to stop selling internal combustion engine vehicles by 2030, citing slow progress in charging infrastructure and the removal of purchase incentives. The company now anticipates its lineup will consist of at least 90% electric vehicles by the end of the decade, including battery-only and plug-in hybrids, with up to 10% potentially being mild hybrids. This shift is in response to evolving market conditions and customer preferences. Despite regulatory pressures in Europe to transition to electric vehicles, the adoption of electric cars has faced challenges, including the abrupt withdrawal of purchase subsidies in Germany and insufficient charging infrastructure. Recent data shows a decline in registrations of battery-only vehicles in Europe. Additionally, new tariffs on electric vehicles from China present further uncertainties, potentially driving up prices. Volvo says that it expects the compact new model, which competes with the Hyundai Kona Electric, Kia Niro Electric and Cupra Born, to be its best-selling model in the coming years, with the first 1,500 examples already sold. As a result, it is in the targets of lease customers, but the company’s local managing director, Stephen Connor, said the brand will aim to meet private customers in the first instance. “We have got the big leasing companies that are interested in these cars, but fortunately for us, our business model isn’t a huge fleet contingent.
