We are redefining automotive safety by combining our legacy of innovation with cutting-edge technology in software-defined vehicles. At WIRED’s The Big Interview event, our Pioneers in Safety installation celebrated milestones such as the three-point safety belt in 1959 along with technologies like the Whiplash Injury Protection System (WHIPS) and Side Impact Protection System (SIPS), which were informed by decades of real-world crash data. Now, we are taking safety to the next level with the all-electric EX90, which is designed to be the safest car we have ever made. Central to this is a powerful core compute architecture, powered by NVIDIA DRIVE, which collects data from various vehicle sensors to better understand what’s going on in and around the car better than ever before. Using real-time sensor data it can continuously improve safety through over-the-air updates. As our chief engineering and technology officer Anders Bell explained, “We are investing in AI where it matters most: saving lives. Our goal is zero accidents.” The EX90 also reflects our commitment to sustainability, offering up to 310 miles of range, rapid charging, and integration with home energy systems. In fact, the EX30 has just scored a maximum five-star rating in the latest round of Euro NCAP safety testing, confirming that it looks after both you and others in hectic urban environments. Euro NCAP is a leading independent car safety assessment programme in Europe and helps customers to make informed decisions about the safety performance of cars on the market. The EX30 is as safe as you’d expect from a Volvo car. With safety systems developed through our unique safety knowledge gained from research in real-world accidents for over 50 years, it is designed to help protect its driver and passengers in the event of a crash in real life. Volvo Cars is one of eleven partners helping to develop the Orcelle Wind – the world’s first wind-powered oceanic car-carrier vessel, with the ambition to substantially reduce carbon emissions.  This week, the project reached a new milestone as some of Sweden's leading experts in ship design and innovation from Wallenius Marine AB and RISE Research Institutes of Sweden visited our wind tunnel in Gothenburg to hold a series of important tests. Using a 5-metre-long model representing the real Orcelle Wind, which will be 220 metres long and carry more than 7,000 cars, the team was able to validate previous data simulations and provide crucial input for design adjustments and further development of the wing control systems. The project is supported by Horizon Europe, which is the EU’s key funding programme for research and innovation. The project coordinator, global Norwegian shipping company Wallenius Wilhelmsen, aims for the Orcelle Wind to start sailing the seas in 2028. Normally, our wind tunnel is used to test our cars at every development stage, from early clay models to final production-ready cars. But we’re happy to occasionally use it for other purposes as well!
