Polestar CEO steps down ⚡️ Thomas Ingenlath's resignation means Michael Lohscheller, former CEO of VinFast and Opel, has been appointed as the new CEO of Polestar, taking over from Thomas Ingenlath, effective October 1, 2024. Volvo is bucking the industry trend with strong sales growth and a significant increase in EV adoption. While many automakers are facing declining sales and slower EV uptake, Volvo Cars, a brand of the Geely Group, is reporting impressive gains. In October alone, Volvo achieved 61,686 global sales, marking a 3% increase from last year. Year-to-date figures are even stronger, with sales up 9% to nearly 623,000 units in the first ten months of 2024. Electric vehicles are a major driver of this growth. Volvo's EV sales have surged by 61% to almost 147,000 units, meaning nearly one in four Volvos sold globally is now electric. Plug-in hybrids have also gained traction, with a 13% increase to 140,000 units. By contrast, sales of mild hybrids and combustion engines declined by 5% to 336,000 units. Europe remains Volvo's largest and fastest-growing market, where sales rose 21% in October and an impressive 30% year-to-date. EV sales in Europe doubled, reaching just over 113,000 units, positioning Volvo to meet the EU’s stricter 2025 CO2 limits. Meanwhile, U.S. sales saw a modest decline of 4%, totaling just under 99,000 units, while sales in China fell 9% to 127,000 units. Volvo says that it expects the compact new model, which competes with the Hyundai Kona Electric, Kia Niro Electric and Cupra Born, to be its best-selling model in the coming years, with the first 1,500 examples already sold. As a result, it is in the targets of lease customers, but the company’s local managing director, Stephen Connor, said the brand will aim to meet private customers in the first instance. “We have got the big leasing companies that are interested in these cars, but fortunately for us, our business model isn’t a huge fleet contingent. While Acconeer’s market leading radar sensors can easily fit on the tip of a finger, they are still able to safely register a sleeping baby in a child seat and/or left behind pets in the cabin. ”There are no equivalent statistics for Europe on the number of hot car – or cold car – deaths that have happened, said Volvo, which also hopes the system will prevent injuries to pets left in cars. The car’s climate system will remain on if people or animals are detected in the cabin, with the aims of lower the risk of hypothermia or heatstroke. Heating or cooling will remain active until the battery runs out of power. Volvo Cars has revised its plans to stop selling internal combustion engine vehicles by 2030, citing slow progress in charging infrastructure and the removal of purchase incentives. The company now anticipates its lineup will consist of at least 90% electric vehicles by the end of the decade, including battery-only and plug-in hybrids, with up to 10% potentially being mild hybrids. This shift is in response to evolving market conditions and customer preferences. Despite regulatory pressures in Europe to transition to electric vehicles, the adoption of electric cars has faced challenges, including the abrupt withdrawal of purchase subsidies in Germany and insufficient charging infrastructure. Recent data shows a decline in registrations of battery-only vehicles in Europe. Additionally, new tariffs on electric vehicles from China present further uncertainties, potentially driving up prices. Richard comments on article "OEM tactical registrations could hit long-term used values, reports INDICATA" Saying: "Tactical registrations by car manufacturers impacted the used car market with sales of less than 12 month old used cars increasing by a massive 39.1% year on year in April per figures from INDICATA. Whilst this points to supply levels being close to pre-covid levels there are some concerns about the impact this will have on used car values moving forward if the trend continues. EV’s are likely to take the biggest hit, with dealers registering but not wholesaling these vehicles.
