🔋🌍 European Battery Manufacturing: Shifting Tides The dominance of Chinese manufacturers in the electric vehicle battery market raises questions about Europe's role in the industry, The 5 largest battery manufacturers in the world are located in Asia. While companies like BYD and CATL - Kstar Science & Technology Co., Ltd. lead the global market, European manufacturers are stepping up to address the challenge. Key Highlights: 1. 🇨🇳 Chinese Dominance: Chinese companies like BYD and CATL - Kstar Science & Technology Co., Ltd. account for two-thirds of global battery production, with impressive manufacturing capabilities and significant market share. 2. 🚀 Expansion into Europe: CATL - Kstar Science & Technology Co., Ltd.'s establishment of a battery factory in Germany signals a strategic move to expand its presence in Europe. With plans to increase capacity from 14 GWh to 100 GWh per year, this move demonstrates China's commitment to the European market. 3. 💡 European Initiatives: Stellantis recently announced a partnership with CATL to build a battery factory, focusing on lithium iron phosphate (LFP) cells for affordable electric vehicles. On the other hand, Volkswagen is building a battery factory with his company PowerCo, in Salzgitter (Germany). It is planned to start in 2025 with 20 GWh. 4. 🏭 Building Capacity: While European brands have battery assembly plants, they lack gigafactories comparable to those in China. To compete effectively, European manufacturers must invest in scaling up battery production to meet growing demand and secure a foothold in the global market. As Europe strives to reduce its reliance on imported batteries and foster a robust domestic industry, collaborations and investments in battery manufacturing infrastructure will play a crucial role. #BatteryManufacturing #SustainableMobility #EuropeanInnovation 🔋🌍

The team at Group14 are sharing some really interesting views on battery supply chains and raw material evolution. (There are also some great whitepapares at the Group14 homepage) Living in #Scania, the southern region located between Sweden and Europe also referred to as "Elzon 4", most of the daily dialogue on the topic of energy transition and battery industry is communicated from the perspective of Mälardalen/Stockholm. The picture is painted from the perspective that raw materials are to be shipped to state sponsored factories in the far north of Sweden where electricity is cheap due to local production protected by the electricity zone system. Then the products are to be shipped out into the world, mainly south. Once reaching end of life, the products are to be shipped back to be recycled. The value chain is described as "green" because electricity is available locally in the north. The environmental aspects of long physical transports of raw materials and finished goods are considered a acceptable cost compared to the alternative of transporting electricity through cables to battery plants located closer to consumers /next node in the value chain. https://lnkd.in/dRzRsb9k

📢Opportunity📢 Volkswagen's battery division, PowerCo SE, is gearing up for its new plant in Ontario, Canada! This state-of-the-art facility is set to produce a whopping 90 GWh of batteries annually, making it their largest plant to date! 💡🌍 To ensure a seamless production start in 2027, PowerCo is on the lookout for reliable suppliers for battery raw materials, foils, chemicals, and componentry. They recently hosted over 100 potential suppliers in Toronto, providing a detailed briefing on their material and logistical requirements. 📝🚛 PowerCo's Chief Purchasing Officer, Jörg Teichmann, emphasized the importance of speed, stating, "We have the next 8-12 months to make all the decisions clear and ramp up the business." ⏰ In addition, PowerCo plans to leverage their existing joint venture with Umicore in Europe for the supply of cathode active material (CAM). They are also seeking anode active material, separator, electrolyte, copper and aluminum foils, as well as cell housings and lids. 🔋 This venture is not without its challenges. Building a supply base from scratch and ensuring compliance with the US tax incentive structure are critical considerations. 🏭 Stay tuned for more updates as PowerCo paves the way for sustainable and efficient electric vehicles in North America! 🌱🚗 #Opportunity #Battery #BEV #SPMobility #SPGlobal

Following on from Europe's EV battery plans fade on China price war, U.S. subsidies, VW, Stellantis, and Mercedes are scaling back or refocusing battery projects. In 2019, France and Germany committed billions to boost Europe’s battery industry. Five years later, efforts are slowing down. As EV sales slow, automakers like Volkswagen, Stellantis, and Mercedes-Benz are adjusting their battery projects. China dominates not only battery production but also the supply chain for key minerals. Europe's focus has been on cell manufacturing rather than mining and refining. With this said this week Gotion and partner InoBat plan a €1.2 billion EV battery plant in Slovakia, with €150 million in subsidies and €64 million in tax breaks. Production starts in early 2027 with full capacity by mid-2027. This investment, Slovakia's second-largest, supports the country’s shift to electric vehicles. Strategic investments and international collaborations still seem to be key as the EV landscape evolves. #EV #BatteryIndustry #Automotive #Sustainability

Batteries are undeniably one of the most critical technologies for the future. But where does Europe stand in terms of technological sovereignty? 🔋 Germany’s industrial strength is anchored in robust clusters, with the automotive sector being a prime example. Seamless collaboration across the value chain – from materials to suppliers and original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) – closely tied to the machinery and equipment industry, has fueled innovation and sustained Germany's competitive edge. The emerging battery value chain is following a similar trajectory, from materials to suppliers, OEMs, and machinery. However, a significant difference exists: Today, this cluster is dominated by Asian players, who hold over 90% of the market, leaving European and American companies trailing. ➡ How can European companies create the right conditions to compete in this China-dominated market? An orchestrated and collaborative approach is essential for Europe to compete effectively. Discover what it will take for a second cluster outside Asia to emerge, ensuring technological sovereignty in this critical future industry, in the Porsche Consulting Strategy Paper: “Battery Manufacturing 2030: Collaborating at Warp Speed”: https://lnkd.in/eSjSbTM5 #Battery #BatteryManufacturing #Automotive #ValueChain #Collaboration
