🚗💨 Can you be a petrolhead and still love EVs? Absolutely.
I recently got around to redeeming a driving experience gift I’d received last year—at Brands Hatch, no less! With an early start on the cards and no car of my own, I decided to hire one for the day. To my surprise, the cheapest option was an EV, and not just any EV—a Hyundai Kona (N Line). I’d been expecting a Jeep Avenger, but as a car enthusiast, I was more than happy to give the Kona a go, especially since I’d previously enjoyed a test drive in the IONIQ 6.
The Kona felt familiar right away, thanks to the similarities with the IONIQ 6. Both cars feature intuitive controls, a great focus on efficiency, and a pleasing blend of digital displays with classic, tactile buttons and switches. With adaptive cruise control, lane assist, and one-pedal driving in eco mode, the Kona made for a relaxed yet engaging drive through town and on the motorway.
Then it was on to the main event: driving a lineup of Aston Martins, Ferraris, and Lamborghinis on the track. It was a brilliant thrill, but it reminded me that these cars are truly at their best on a circuit, where you can properly stretch their legs. In the Kona, like many EVs, you get to enjoy that instant torque anytime, anywhere—from traffic lights to joining the motorway.
A highlight of the day was a hot lap, complete with G-forces that left me feeling a bit light-headed—similar to the thrill I felt from the BYD Seal’s acceleration. Sure, supercars have an amazing soundtrack that EVs just can’t replicate, but EVs bring a unique kind of fun that can’t be denied. Brands like Hyundai, with models like the IONIQ 5 N, are proving that EVs can appeal to us car enthusiasts too.
So yes, you can absolutely be a petrolhead and still love EVs. After all, they’re still cars—and some very exciting ones at that.
And yes, that is a Porsche Taycan parked next to me—one of several other EVs I spotted at the driving experience car park!
