OpenAI coming to Zurich is both exciting and bittersweet. It's a testament to Zurich's recognition as a tech hub with incredible talent, proven over and over again. Yet, it highlights a challenge: our best talent often works for others instead of creating the next OpenAI right here in Switzerland. How can we shift from being tech mercenaries to building groundbreaking innovations locally?

Can the European Innovation system leverage large research infrastructures for building competitiveness? There is a lot of evidence that the answer would be yes. For example, there has been a lot of work around CERN (e.g. Bastianin et al. 2022) looking at different aspects how these large infrastructures create impact. The interesting thing is, that with CERN and other large physical research infrastructures, the impact is actually developed already during development via e.g. innovative procurement. The challenge is, how to get #industry excited about the opportunities research infrastructures create to do #ResearchandDevelopment Another major challenge is to ensure we use the policy tools that we have to drive innovation. My colleague Ville Valovirta with co-authors Jon Mikel Zabala-Iturriagagoitia and Stephanie Francis Grimbert have looked at Public Procurement for Innovation and their work highlights how it really needs a mix of capabilities to really ensure #innovation impacts.
