Norway’s Electric Car Market: Record Highs, but Chinese Brands Struggle to Gain Traction Electric cars dominate new car sales in Norway, and the trend is stronger than ever. As of 2024, electric vehicles make up 89.3% of all new car registrations, with 93.6% of the cars sold in November being electric. While the number of cars sold in 2024 has increased compared to last year, we are still far from the record-breaking years of 2021 and 2022, when sales peaked. Economic uncertainty and high interest rates have impacted the market, but the second half of the year has shown a notable recovery. At the top of the sales list, we still see familiar names like #Tesla, which remains strong, with the Tesla Model Y being the undisputed market leader. Other popular models from traditional manufacturers, such as the #Volkswagen ID.4 and #Skoda Enya,q also play a significant role in the success of electric cars. While the electric car market grows, there’s an interesting trend with Chinese electric vehicles. Despite significant investment and marketing efforts, Chinese brands have struggled to gain the expected traction in Norway. This may be partly due to fierce competition from established brands like Tesla, Volkswagen, and Audi, which already have a strong foothold in the Norwegian market. Nah....if that's true, why is Volvo dumping the 100% BEV Polestar? Volvo is using profits from their hybrids to fund the BEVs. Stefan's comments show heightened importance of hybrids. They weren't speaking this way in 2022. In some countries, including Malaysia, Volvo has been cutting PHEV offerings. XC40 PHEV is no more. Now the global leadership is saying "hybrids are an important bridge," with "remain committed to 100% BEV by 2030, no ifs no buts." Volvo can't backdown because the Volvo brand is very tied to virtue signaling - very social values driven, which is commendable but at some point you have to ask if you are a religion or a business? Businesses need to listen to customers. How will Volvo's decision pan out in 2030 is the next CEO's problem. Too early to celebrate.
