𝐔𝐧𝐥𝐨𝐜𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐩𝐨𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐚𝐥: 𝐂𝐚𝐧 𝐞𝐇𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐡 𝐬𝐨𝐥𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐜𝐮𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐆𝐞𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐧 𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐡𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐬𝐲𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐦❓ The prognosis for German healthcare is clear: aging populations, the upcoming chronic disease epidemic, rural care deserts, a shortage of skilled professionals, and a digital deficit demand urgent attention. But can digital health solutions deliver the expected relief? Patient-centric innovations hold the key: telemedicine, mHealth, eRecords, and ePrescriptions promise faster care, smarter diagnostics, and enhanced access, improving patient experiences along all stages of the patient journey. Yet, Germany lags behind in digital readiness, ranking second last (out of 17) at the Digital Health Index – despite large investments that are provided by the German government only for the digitalization of the healthcare system (e.g., €4.3 bn for the “KHZG”). Virtual wards present a potentially promising advancement in healthcare, but their success hinges on the true driving force behind their implementation. If the focus is on better patient outcomes, particularly for those who can safely receive care at home, the benefits are substantial. For instance, patients at home face a lower risk of hospital-acquired infections like MRSA. Additionally, virtual wards can be highly effective for managing chronic diseases, allowing for continuous remote monitoring and timely interventions without the need for frequent hospital visits. However, caution is necessary. If virtual wards are deployed primarily for cost management, the resulting patient experience (PX) will be inside-out, designed to meet the hospital’s needs rather than the patients’. To truly succeed, virtual wards must be designed with an outside-in approach, ensuring that patient needs and outcomes are at the forefront of the design and implementation process.

Can finance drive revenue growth and meet sustainability goals? Questions like these are currently at the forefront of many conversations. Germany is taking the "virtual wards" of the NHS as a role model: leading German hospital chain Asklepios has just launched Germany's first “virtual hospital wards”. I wrote down a few thoughts. 1️⃣ "𝐑𝐞𝐦𝐨𝐭𝐞 𝐏𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐌𝐨𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 (𝐑𝐏𝐌)" 𝐧𝐞𝐞𝐝𝐞𝐝 𝐛𝐨𝐭𝐡 𝐚 𝐫𝐞𝐛𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐚𝐧 𝐄𝐧𝐝-𝐭𝐨-𝐄𝐧𝐝 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐩𝐭 Leveraging technology to remotely manage patients has been a topic for 20+ years. For some reasons, it had never really scaled. During the COVID phase, the NHS, facing a shortage of beds, introduced virtual wards—an end-to-end solution, unlike many other RPM concepts that simply send extra data to already overworked physicians & nurses. And "Virtual Wards" sounds better than "Remote Patient Monitoring" ;) 2️⃣ 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐥 𝐛𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐟𝐢𝐭𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐯𝐢𝐫𝐭𝐮𝐚𝐥 𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐝𝐬 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐛𝐞𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐜𝐮𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐝 Virtual wards across England are diverse, with different patient populations, referral pathways, technology use and staffing models. It makes generalising evidence across them challenging. The vast majority of studies showed clear (cost) benefits. But some studies also showed that virtual wards can actually increase costs (Jalilian et al., BMJ). "Virtual wards are unlikely to be a panacea, and it’s unlikely every virtual ward model will be successful across all outcomes. What outcomes should be prioritised, and how should these be measured?". (The Health Foundation) 3️⃣ 𝐀𝐬𝐤𝐥𝐞𝐩𝐢𝐨𝐬' 𝐦𝐨𝐯𝐞 𝐢𝐬 𝐛𝐨𝐥𝐝 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐬𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐞 𝐚𝐬 𝐚𝐧 𝐢𝐧𝐬𝐩𝐢𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐨𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐆𝐞𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐧 𝐡𝐨𝐬𝐩𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐥𝐬. During this time of hospital crisis and nervousness around financing reform in Germany, Asklepios is still pushing its transformation. What's especially interesting is that many payors are involved, meaning new reimbursement codes for virtual wards and RPM should be defined. This is urgent: #Germany is behind with only one RPM reimbursement code (for heart failure), while France reimburses RPM for many health conditions. 4️⃣ 𝐓𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐢𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐛𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐮𝐧𝐛𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐡𝐨𝐬𝐩𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐥𝐬, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐢𝐬 𝐚 𝐠𝐨𝐨𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠 VC a16z explains how tech is unbundling hospitals through new digital entry points and vertical carve-outs, turning hospitals into one touchpoint in a digital care journey. E. Emanuel, former Obama health advisor, agrees: "Hospitals are disappearing. They may never fully vanish, but they will shrink in number and importance. That’s inevitable and good." Former Harvard professor Clayton Christensen also echoed this, often stating that "the hospital business model is broken." ----- The NHS will be widely represented at HLTH Europe next year in June in Amsterdam. The first project that gets all my attention focuses on Commercial Excellence in the pharmaceutical industry. As a cancer survivor, this has been both exciting and encouraging for me. 🎀 The innovation being driven by new technology even in its various intricate regulatory restriction, is truly astonishing. The future promises a more integrated healthcare system. I strongly believe in incorporating more holistic approaches into #healthcare. A #DigitalTwin could change how we think about next best actions in a way that makes sense for the industry and is the best for the patient. Bringing conversations like this to the forefront, especially with experts from #Grünenthal, #Pfzier, #Bayer and other pace setters in this industry, is very enlightening. #GenerativeAI, makes me more confident than ever that there is a better way to do things. This is a great step forward in getting to understand those limitations and possibilities. Looking forward to learning more and onboarding great minds!

HBR Article: How to Map Out Your Digital Transformation by Benjamin Mueller. The following parargra "If digital transformation is supposed to be meaningful and lasting, companies must think about changes in products and processes more than changes in technology. But many companies struggle to look past the shiny promises that usually accompany new technologies. As a result, they dedicate too many resources and too much attention to the technology side of digital transformation projects." This passage is emphasizing that for digital transformation to be truly effective and enduring, companies need to focus more on changing their products and processes rather than just adopting new technologies. Meaningful and Lasting Transformation: To achieve a digital transformation that has a real and lasting impact, it's not enough to simply implement new technologies. The transformation must also involve significant changes in how the company operates, including its products and processes. Focus Beyond Technology: Many companies get distracted by the allure of new technologies and their flashy features. They may become overly focused on the technology itself rather than considering how it will affect and improve their existing products and processes. Resource Allocation: Companies often allocate too many resources (time, money, and attention) to the technology side of the transformation. While technology is important, the success of digital transformation depends more on how well it integrates with and enhances the company’s overall strategy, processes, and product offerings. Shiny Promises: New technologies often come with exciting promises and marketing hype. Companies might be drawn to these promises without fully evaluating how these technologies will fit into and improve their actual business operations. 𝐄𝐌𝐏𝐎𝐖𝐄𝐑𝐄𝐃 𝐖𝐎𝐌𝐄𝐍 𝐄𝐌𝐏𝐎𝐖𝐄𝐑 𝐖𝐎𝐌𝐄𝐍 Recently, I spoke at an internal female event at Siemens Healthineers. Honestly, it was kind of a unique talk for me as female business coach - very different from what I usually do. More precisely, Jessica Girgert mentioned in our preliminary talk that they wanted to hear more about my personal story. How and why I became a professional coach for women in tech environment. Especially as this path with a background as chemical engineer is quite uncommon. To wrap it up: It was an absolutely great event with a variety of topics, different perspectives and a lot of personal stories. It was definitely not the “typical” talk. It wasn't about "how to" do something. No simple "knowledge transfer". Instead, we discussed our personal views on female empowerment, setting ambitious personal goals (and allowing ourselves to adjust them along the way) and handling challenges as women in the business world. It was all about personal stories and sharing real experiences. And that’s how we can inspire each other the most. Empowered women empower women. Thanks a lot to to this great community! The introduction of new medical therapies represents major challenges for healthcare providers such as hospitals or medical practices. Often, there is insufficient information about how these innovations will affect internal processes and, consequently, personnel resources. Therefore, necessary resources can only be planned with difficulty, and some of these questions can only be partially answered: 🔹 Which new drugs will come to market in the near future? 🔹 What will the additional costs be? Can other costs be saved to compensate? 🔹 Are investments in infrastructure necessary? 🔹 Are there enough personnel resources to apply the new therapy to all eligible patients? 🔹 What information would be necessary to estimate whether and how innovative therapies will impact internal processes and resources? 🔹 How can healthcare providers prepare for innovative therapies and reduce planning risks?   Bjoern Grob, partner at the Swiss consulting company HEMAP AG, and I addressed these questions in a paper published in the current issue of ÖKZ magazine. I had a blast at health.tech conference together my dear colleague Robert Huber representing Digital Dental & Healthcare Technology GmbH & Co. KG. We are building innovative dental medical devices and wanted to identify key partners, industry stakeholders, and hot trends in this sector. For me it was a success. Thanks to everyone we met. Here are three fast take-aways: #hardware is becoming more and more of a hot topic. Who would have thought? #fundraising from VCs is tough right now but there are other options of financing like getting public grants or even starting an equity crowdfunding campaign - a hot trend in the US right now. #startup life is like deep sea diving. You get the oxygen tank (cash) you dive in and from then on the clock starts ticking (burn rate) and you know you'll need to resurface (raise again/survive on your own) in the near future. Yesterday I had the great opportunity to attend the Digital Health Conference 2024 in Berlin, organised by BITKOM! More than 700 experts from healthcare, politics, startups and industry came together to discuss one central question: How can we shape healthcare through digital transformation?
