What an absolute privilege this week! NICE - National Institute for Health and Care Excellence - TAC and HST Committees and NICE colleagues came together in person this week, with a brilliant agenda, chaired by Radha Todd and Prof Stephen O'Brien. Making a positive difference to patient #outcomes and #experience deeply motivates all of us working in life sciences, health and social care sectors, and regulatory bodies - all centred on #listening to #patients. #Patient #participation has come a long way, with NICE leading the charge among HTAs. Of course, there is scope for significant improvement. We therefore had a panel session on 'Acknowledging the challenges of patient advocacy in HTAs'. Stella O'Brien kicked the session off with a call for #epistemic #justice, bringing her passion for advocating for patients always evident in our NICE TAC and her international work. Lindsay Birrell and Josie Godfrey, co-founders of Realise Advocacy, spoke on their recent #report on 'The Real Cost of Patient Involvement' that focuses on the costs to rare diseases patient organisations, with broad applicability. Radha Todd brought her experience as a consultant medical oncologist in the #NHS and chair of #NICE TAC A. Dominic Pivonka brought a thoughtful #biopharmaceutical #industry perspective, helping broaden the remit beyond rare diseases. Mandy and Janine Wigmore shared a clear #path #forward, with NICE at the fulcrum. The message was clear - we can do a lot more together to address the current challenges facing patients and patient organisations through HTAs. 1. Simplify complexity (e.g. plain language summaries, incorporating patient surveys to HTAs) 2. Help prioritise the asks of patient organisations 3. Recognise and address resource challenges on patient organisation side - staffing, welfare, financing. Looking forward to the next steps together seeing these acknowledged needs being addressed via #multi-#stakeholder #patient-#centred initiatives. I first heard about the impact of private equity in medicine at the @AmerMedicalAssn  HOD meetings in Chicago.  Colleagues from diverse medical specialties openly discussed the challenges they were facing when their practices were operating under a private equity model.  They voiced their concerns about patient care and health outcomes in addition to workforce stability.  Recently @AlzAssociation #AAIC2024 meeting, my colleagues and I from the GEAR network ( https://lnkd.in/gXugPrWg ) highlighted some of these concerns as we discussed the increasing use of disease modifying drugs for Alzheimer’s disease and the potential for adverse events ( i.e. ARIA) - that may result in an emergency department (ED) visit.  We highlighted important issues regarding patients presenting to the ED who may be experiencing an adverse event. ·      Is the ED, its physicians, and healthcare teams, equipped and ready for potential visits from patients who may be having an adverse event on while on these drugs? ·      Are the communication channels in place with all members of the workforce to ensure safe health outcomes in this changing environment?
