Last Friday, Culture House Official co-founders Marlon C. Nichols and Rodney Williams hosted CultureHouse HTX @ AfroTech, marking our largest and most impactful event to date. Here’s a recap of the programming: The day began with an exclusive GovTech Breakfast in collaboration with the Maryland Collective, followed by a panel discussion titled “Building Black Wealth: Unlocking Opportunities through Private and Government Contracting.” Panelists included Dr. Tammira Lucas, Venture Growth Advisor at TEDCO; Delali Dzirasa, Founder & CEO of Fearless; Darrell Booker, Head of Nonprofit Tech Acceleration at Microsoft; Brian J. Wright, PHR, Director of Global Leadership, Learning & Development at Delta Air Lines; and Jennifer Hanks, CFCM, NCMA Fellow, CEO of MMC Consulting. Next, the For The Culture Brunch shifted the focus to the venture capital ecosystem. As a first-generation college student and a Black woman in HR, I have come to appreciate the indispensable role of equity within the DEI framework. Equity is not an optional addition; it forms the fundamental cornerstone. While inclusion and diversity initiatives are crucial, they fall short without equity. Our aim should be to guarantee that everyone not only has a place at the table but also an equal chance to voice their thoughts, make contributions, and thrive. Omitting equity from DEI undermines the strides we aim to take. In light of SHRM’s decision to embrace "I&D" instead of "IE&D," I must express my firm opposition. While SHRM's dedication to inclusion is praiseworthy, the sidelining of equity is regressive. Equity ensures a level playing field for all and the necessary resources for success. For marginalized communities, it involves acknowledging the distinct challenges and barriers they encounter and actively working to eradicate them. Let's be unequivocal: our commitment to inclusion and diversity must be resolute, but it must never come at the expense of equity. Without equity, we cannot genuinely attain the inclusive environments we aspire to create. Let's persist in advocating for comprehensive DEI frameworks that prioritize equity and guarantee that every voice is heard and every individual has the opportunity to thrive.

🌟 Reflection 🌟 Today, I had the privilege of attending the Haitian Health Conference 2024, led by Haitian community, healthcare professionals, leaders, and organizations. Conversations hit differently when they are led by those who both serve and live within the community. Everyone agreed -- the resettlement of new Haitian migrants is currently in crisis. State agencies and health centers need to do something different with urgency. Kevin M. Simon, MD, MPH, Chief Behavioral Health Officer for City of Boston, captured the reality of the situation, “If we are only giving people poor options, we will only see poor outcomes.” It was also very clear that Haitian leaders and community organizations in Boston and across the Commonwealth continue to fill the gap with limited support. Here are some undeniable truths #healthequity #socialimpact leaders and organizations must confront to engage in meaningful discussions and actions. 🇭🇹 Haiti was the first Black republic in the world – and still paying for it. For decades, Haiti has faced political unrest and economic instability. This crisis is deeply rooted in anti-Blackness from the time enslaved Africans dared to revolt against US, France, and Canada colonizers and declare independence. The world must step up and do right by Haiti. 🇭🇹 "Your body keeps score." - quote by attendee. Crossing the Darién Gap between Colombia and Panama is a necessary act for livelihood. Individuals who make it literally carry the physical and emotional scars with them – daily. The intersection of xenophobia and anti-Blackness embedded in U.S. and Mexican policies only compounds the trauma. 🇭🇹 The productivity counternarrative is harmful. The response to the crisis is politically determined and how we resist drives federal and state policy change. Too often the counternarrative starts with stats on the economic contributions of Haitians. Yes, and -- valuing humans solely for their productivity isn’t just dehumanizing; but also perpetuates systemic harm. Seeking refuge and asylum is a legal and human right. Periodt. 🇭🇹 Community is doing what it always does - lead. Haitian-led organizations and leaders are intervening from the border to detention centers and shelters up to the White House, defining approaches centering culture, language, and healing. Finding My Path, My Way As we celebrate Black History Month, I’ve been reflecting on the theme of Reclaiming Narratives. For me, it’s not just about honoring the stories of the past, it’s about owning and shaping our own journeys. Every path has its twists and turns, and mine has been no different. When I first moved to the UK, I had no idea what I wanted to do. I was drawn to anthropology because I’m fascinated by people and culture, but life had other plans. I got pushed into a “practical” route that didn’t feel right, and for a while, I was totally lost. Then, after conversation after conversation with my people the topic around HR came up. With zero experience but a “why not” attitude, I jumped into a master’s program. No grand plan, just hoping to figure it out along the way. That’s when everything started to fall in place. I was seconded into an HR systems and data role, and suddenly, it all made sense. I wasn’t just crunching numbers, I was uncovering stories. Real insights about people, their experiences, and how the workplace could change for the better. That’s when I knew: this is where I want to be. Now, I’m using data to make real impact, helping organisations understand their people, and making sure diversity isn’t just a buzzword. And I’m doing it on my terms, with my own story leading the way. This Black History Month, it’s all about reclaiming our narratives. We don’t always have the perfect roadmap, but the journey teaches you who you are, and where you’re meant to be. 🙌🏾Don’t be afraid of detours – Your path might not always be clear, but every step teaches you something valuable. 🙌🏾Find your passion – When you’re unsure, keep exploring. The right fit might surprise you, just like data surprised me! 🙌🏾Use your skills for impact – Whatever your niche is, find ways to make a difference. In my case, it’s using data to help build better, more inclusive workplaces. 🙌🏾Ask for help – Conversations with mentors, family, or peers can open doors you never considered.
