Key Initiatives Include: Educational Outreach: Engaging with primary and high school students in underrepresented areas, including Indigenous and rural communities, and focusing on aspiration-building in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) careers. Empowerment Programs: Conducting well-being and leadership programs, particularly for girls and women in Indigenous communities. Apprenticeships and Traineeships: Offering school-based opportunities for First Nations students and at-risk youth, providing a pathway into in-demand industries. Inclusive Hiring: Actively recruiting individuals with disabilities, refugees, and older women seeking to re-enter the workforce, supported by job-readiness programs. In Parliament House on Monday, I attended the launch by Professor Barney Glover AO, Commissioner, Jobs and Skills Australia of the "Better Together – The Jobs and Skills Report 2024”. This comprehensive report is a crucial step towards addressing Australia's current and future workforce needs, and it highlights the importance of fostering inclusive participation, understanding today's workforce, and shaping the future workforce. One key theme that resonates deeply with my electorate of Fowler is the need for a more systematic approach to alternative pathways for our young people. As we navigate the evolving job market, it's essential to ensure that our youth have access to diverse and viable career options. Without this, there's a real risk that many will drift away from education and miss out on opportunities for secure, safe, and fairly paid work. I look forward to further engaging with Jobs and Skills Australia to work together to ensure that young people in Fowler and Western Sydney have the opportunity to pursue a viable career path. I’m excited for November, when I’ll have the privilege to guest lecture for the Social Innovations course. Behind the scenes, I continue sharing insights from the Untapped Talent report, a project that sheds light on how we can better integrate diverse talent into Scotland’s economy. The 18 recommendations outlined in the report are a catalyst for shifting perspectives across sectors, ensuring that Scotland’s rich diversity is reflected in our workforce. Universities are an ideal place to start these crucial conversations and implement meaningful change, especially when students are contributing so much to the economy. One research respondent noted, “I will have paid £240k for my degree, only to face a starting salary of £30k.” This underscores the need for urgent action to bridge the gap between education and meaningful career progression. The Untapped Talent report helps reshape the narrative around ethnic minority communities, especially those from African backgrounds. Contrary to the perception that they are “hard to reach” or in need of constant employability support, this group is over-prespected but under-served when it comes to actual career growth opportunities. It’s time to move beyond rhetoric and provide real access to opportunities for growth. Another impactful stride made by Arise Centre is empowering vulnerable women and youth through employment opportunities in the tourism and hospitality sector. Did you know that the tourism and hospitality sectors have been pivotal in driving global economic growth, generating one in four new jobs worldwide in the past five years? Shockingly, over one-fifth of young people globally face barriers to education, employment, or training, putting them at high risk of poverty and exploitation. This is where Arise Centre steps in. Through tailored training programs focusing on skill development, entrepreneurship, leadership, and career progression, we have been able to provide hope for those in need. For the past two years, our dedication to supporting women and men from disadvantaged backgrounds has been unwavering. By collaborating with local technical vocational training centres, we have facilitated access to training and practical experience in the hospitality industry, paving the way for long-term and credible career opportunities. 📉 The Social Mobility Crisis is a £19 Billion Annual Cost to the UK: How Can We Do Better? A new report from Demos Demos and Co-op highlights a critical issue: a lack of social mobility costs the UK economy £19 billion each year. The report reveals that individuals from lower socioeconomic backgrounds are significantly less likely to earn high incomes, even when education levels are comparable. Reflecting these inequalities, the World Economic Forum’s Global Social Mobility Index 2020 ranks the UK 21st out of 82 countries, underscoring persistent challenges in social mobility. Why this matters for early careers: Without meaningful progress in providing equal opportunities, talent from lower socioeconomic backgrounds often remains untapped. Social mobility should remain a priority as we look to bridge the gap in access to opportunities and outcomes across socioeconomic backgrounds. Looking ahead: Small changes could make a big difference. From broadening apprenticeship levels to removing unnecessary hurdles in the hiring process, organisations can unlock new opportunities and foster a more inclusive workforce. Simply put, the UK is NOT doing enough to drive #SocialMobility forward. In the Social Mobility Commission's new report, 'Innovation Generation', the commission digs into the primary challenges that have created the decline of social mobility in the UK over past few decades... The report focuses on two critical areas of focus: economy and geography. A stagnation in productivity has limited the growth of professional job opportunities in the country, meaning that only a select few are able to progress. (And those few tend to only be located in #London and the #Southeast) The report also explores #OpportunityForAll, and how partnerships are needed to open new pathways into professional organisations. While the report challenges the fact that government has placed too high an emphasis on using #University degrees as the primary mechanisms for social mobility, it also nods to the relative success of #Graduates in creating upward mobility for themselves. At Blackbullion, we believe that businesses MUST do more to continue to open these pathways to more students from diverse socioeconomic backgrounds through #Scholarships.
