Kickstarting sustainable communities and livelihoods.

About us

Power for the People (UK registration 1162330) was founded in 2015 to kickstart sustainable development in communities categorised as multidimensionally poor by UNDP through food security programs; access to clean water and electricity; education and healthcare; economic regeneration; and sustainable livelihoods. Our programmes offer access to education, clean water and electricity, food security, and sustainable livelihoods. We offer “handshakes-not-handouts”, investing in communities so that beneficiaries can pay for what they need. Their payments go towards further development of their communities. Clean technologies and solar-powered electricity form the enabling backbone of our projects. We are staffed by a core team of industry-expert volunteers who work closely with beneficiaries and selected local delivery partners to design and deliver projects.

Access to #healthcare is at the heart of Power for the People's Vision of healthy, educated and skilled people building prosperous, sustainable communities and I'm so proud to share that thousands of people on #Kenya's Remba Island, and visitors from nearby Rusting and Mfangano, have benefitted from our second free medical camp. A huge thank you to all our partners, and the volunteer medical staff, who made this happen 🙏 #sdgs #community #thursday #sustainabledevelopment

Bringing Healthcare Closer to the Margininalized At Power for the People our mission is rooted in service to the community. We ensure that essential resources and care reach those who need them most Today, in partnership with incredible collaborators, we held our second free medical camp on Remba Island. This initiative provided the community with access to quality medical care, addressing various ailments and bringing much-needed relief to families. The turnout was overwhelming, a testament to the community's trust in such initiatives. Beyond treatments, the camp allowed us to share health knowledge, strengthen ties, and continue our commitment to improving lives. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to our partners and healthcare workers for their dedication, and to the Remba Island community for embracing this initiative. #HealthForAll #CommunityService #RembaIsland #PowerForThePeople

  • WOW! You did it! We've done the maths and with direct donations, match funds, gift aid and offline donations you've raised nearly £50,000 just one week for innovative, transformative development work, delivered hand-in-hand with local community partners in East Africa. We have some life-changing projects in our pipeline for 2025, the funds you helped us raise will support: 💧Providing clean water for hundreds in Dalelekutuk, Kajiado with a solar-powered borehole and smart-kiosk system. 🏥Boosting health facilities and training health promoters on Remba Island. 📚  Expanding digital learning and youth leadership and advocacy programmes with at Elong’o school, Osupukiai 🌾 Equipping farmers in Agago, Uganda with a post-harvest processing equipment and training to maximise their yields. 🚀Transforming lives in Endebess, Trans Nzoia and tackling gender-based violence with PFP Academy training and livelihood support. Thank you to each and every single person and company that donated - as a #SmallYetMighty charity every penny counts. Together, we're creating lasting change! 🌟💪

  • We’re heading into the final hours of our Big Give Christmas Challenge, and today we are sharing a short update from Caren Okombo reflecting on her recent scoping visit to Endebess, Trans Nzoia county. In September this year, we were shocked and saddened to read of the death of athlete Rebecca Chiptegei who lived here, at the hands of her spouse. The beauty of being a #smallbutmighty charity is that we can be nimble, flexible and responsive to need - so we set up a scoping visit through a trusted contact on the ground to meet Rebecca’s family, the wider community and key government stakeholders. Your donations to the Big Give will enable us to partner in more communities to break the cycle of poverty that holds people back, creating lasting change through #HandshakesNotHandouts

Lovely to be at the #OperationalPPP Awards tonight representing Power for the People who together with Leeds Community Foundation will be benefitting from all the generous donations from award attendees this evening. Although it’s definitely #SmallCharityLife when you’re in the lobby of a posh hotel an hour before it starts…hurriedly sticking Gift Aid declaration stickers on envelopes as the branded donation envelopes didn’t arrive on time 😭 Here’s to a great night at the #OPPPAwards and hoping lots of funds raised to support Power for the People’s work. • 🌟Less than 24 hours to go in our Big Give #ChristmasChallenge where all donations will be doubled!🌟 👉 https://lnkd.in/eStKEsRc Today we are focussing on PFP's work on SDG4: Access to Quality Education. John is a bright young student with dreams of becoming an engineer. But he attends a school where the classrooms are crumbling, textbooks are scarce, and teaching is a daily struggle due to a lack of resources. The school serves some of the poorest in the community, but receives no government funding so is reliant on parent's contributions. Teachers, disheartened by the challenges, often leave, making it difficult to maintain a consistent quality of education. PFP has worked with John's school for the last three years. We have built a Window on the World ICT Hub and Library, connecting the school with solar power and digital access to enable teachers and pupils to access a wealth of information, engage in innovative and interactive learning and inspire students like John to pursue their dreams. We have also introduced a Youth Leadership programme focussed on five key areas: Environment, Menstrual and Sexual Reproductive Health, Digital Literacy, School Enterprise and Sports. We've invested in a school farm, which is providing nutritious food for the pupils with surplus sold to support the school's costs. Thanks to our pipeline extension last year, the school now benefits from access to clean water for drinking, cooking and to irrigate the farm. But there is still much work to do. The teachers want PFP to replace the unhygienic, overflowing pit latrines with new washrooms incorporating biodigester technology - producing fertilizer for the school farm and biogas to replace wood and charcoal cooking. We will construct new classrooms using a pioneering architecture approach which significantly reduces the cost and carbon footprint, and introduce laptops to the school's Window to the World to complement their tablets. And we will build on our pilot of the PFP clubs to foster youth leadership and self-advocacy - contributing to the next generation of change-makers. Join us in strengthening the quality of learning at PFP’s partner schools and create a lasting impact on these young minds. Donate today and have your donation doubled at https://lnkd.in/eStKEsRc #ChristmasChallenge24 #DigitalAccess #EmpowerEducation #SDG4

I love Power for the People’s unique and muti-faceted way of tackling extreme poverty! We offer our partner communities #handshakesnothandouts because we don’t hand out charity, we #invest in their #future. The project entry point is different for each community, they are the #changemakers, they choose. The problems they have - #water and #food insecurity, #illiteracy, poor #health, #unemployment, displacement, #climate crises, exploitation, #gender issues, lack of voice… - are similar but unique to their locality, so we #connect communities to learn from each other and #innovate together to build better. And every project pays into their #community fund to maintain and expand what they build. For me supporting their work is an exciting, illuminating, and life-affirming journey. If you want to join us in building #sustainable communities please donate here https://lnkd.in/eMhwbvnP or contact Janine Edwards. Your donation is DOUBLED UNTIL NOON ON TUESDAY 10the DEC. #friday #kenya #uganda #dignity

It's #Day3 of our Big Give Christmas Challenge campaign and today we are focussing on access to water. Imagine walking for miles every day just to fetch water, like Maria. Maria's entire day is spent on this exhausting task, leaving no time for her to engage in economic activities, care for her family, or even dream of a better future. That is the reality for many women living in Dalelekutuk in Kajiado County, where PFP has partnered with local organisation #EnkakenyaSidai since 2023. Your donation could transform Maria's life and thousands of women, men and children by enabling this community to access clean water. The ripple effect will be incredible: Maria and her family will have plenty of water for washing, cooking and drinking, her husband will be able to water his livestock even during times of drought, and the community will have irrigation for their demonstration farms and community fodder projects. With ready access to water, Maria will be able to participate in PFP's livelihoods training and access start up funding for her business activities through our Revolving Loan Fund, bringing more income in to pay for the things her family needs like school fees, medicines, clothing and food. Until 10 December all donations to Power for the People’s fundraising campaign will be DOUBLED by the Big Give. That means a donation of £25 will be DOUBLED to £50, creating double the difference for people without access to water. Please join us in supporting this important mission - donate now at  https://lnkd.in/eStKEsRc #ChristmasChallenge24 #WaterIsLife #GiveWaterGiveLife #PowerForThePeople #SustainableDevelopmentGoals #SDG6

  • Bringing Dignity to Every Action We Take As we reflect on the just-concluded Dignity Conference, one resounding message stands out: dignity is at the heart of everything we do at Power for the People . Our mission is clear – to ensure that marginalized individuals, especially women and girls, live a dignified life through access to education, healthcare, clean energy, and economic empowerment opportunities. The stories shared at the conference reminded us of the transformative power of hope and opportunity. From providing sustainable menstrual hygiene solutions through Arise Pads to empowering young mothers with skills and startup support, we are making dignity a lived reality for the communities we serve. But we can’t do this alone. Your support is vital in helping us expand our reach and deepen our impact. Together, we can bring light, opportunity, and dignity to even more lives. #PowerForThePeople #DignityInAction #Empowerment #DonateNow #Biggive
