About us
Demos is a champion of people, ideas, and democracy. We bring people together. We bridge divides. We listen and we understand. We are practical about the problems we face, but endlessly optimistic and ambitious about our capacity, together, to overcome them. At a crossroads in Britain’s history, we need ideas for renewal, reconnection and the restoration of hope. Challenges from populism to climate change remain unsolved, and a technological revolution dawns, but the centre of politics has been intellectually paralysed. Demos will change that. We can counter the impossible promises of the political extremes, and challenge despair – by bringing to life an aspirational narrative about the future of Britain that is rooted in the hopes and ambitions of people from across our country.

💻❗"By the 2029 election, will the UK be able to make collective decisions based on reliable information and productive public deliberation? Will we be debating what has actually happened to public services and the economy or debating untruths?" In a new blog, authored by Elizabeth Seger and Hannah Perry, we announce a new, ambitious programme of work, Epistemic Security 2029. The project will aim to answer the difficult questions posed by flaws in our current information ecosystem, including concerns about foreign influence on UK democratic processes and the impacts of social media and generative AI on democratic discourse for the next political era. 📚 Read more here 👉 https://lnkd.in/eeQuVq9F

💻🧠 Let's think beyond silver bullets and snake oil. In a NEW paper from Sophia Knight, Elizabeth Seger and Ben Glover, we set out how AI can be a part of the radical transformation our public services desperately need. ➡️ https://lnkd.in/gCc68Ycs This paper builds on Demos' new 'Liberated Public Services' agenda and maps out how we can – and must - embed data and AI *within* a reformed public service model that addresses the deep structural problems we face today. AI can serve this agenda by; ➡️ Supporting prevention by using predictive modelling, ➡️ Empowering frontline service professionals by freeing up time spent on administrative tasks, and ➡️ Improving communication and collaboration with citizens through AI-enabled civic technology. Yet, it is critical that we get the use of AI into our public services right. To do this, we need the following foundations; 📚 A National Data Library that helps local government, service providers, and citizens to make effective use of data to improve public service provision 🛒 Create AI procurement guidance to support local authorities to procure AI tools that meet their needs 🪪 Seriously discuss the role of Digital ID, addressing privacy and digital exclusion 🔬 Orient a proportion of AI R&D in the UK toward developing public interest AI 📺 Catch up on yesterday's launch event for the paper and hear from Daniel Aldridge MP, Gina Neff, Hetan Shah and report Lead Author, Sophia Knight 👉 https://lnkd.in/ex-5k9rV
