Tackling Australia's Skills Shortage with Innovative Initiatives Despite low unemployment rates and a robust labour market, Australia faces a growing skills shortage, with recruitment difficulty sitting at 54% according to a February 2024 report by Jobs and Skills Australia. Addressing this challenge calls for a united approach involving vocational and higher education, industry stakeholders, and a streamlined migration system. However, the Great Place To Work Certified™ community in Australia is taking notable strides by engaging with underserved communities to bridge these workforce gaps and build future talent. Key Initiatives Include: Educational Outreach: Engaging with primary and high school students in underrepresented areas, including Indigenous and rural communities, and focusing on aspiration-building in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) careers. Empowerment Programs: Conducting well-being and leadership programs, particularly for girls and women in Indigenous communities. Apprenticeships and Traineeships: Offering school-based opportunities for First Nations students and at-risk youth, providing a pathway into in-demand industries. Inclusive Hiring: Actively recruiting individuals with disabilities, refugees, and older women seeking to re-enter the workforce, supported by job-readiness programs. These efforts by certified companies not only address critical skill gaps but also inspire a new generation to envision and achieve brighter futures, thereby fostering a more inclusive and equitable society. It's International Youth Day: today and everyday we stand with and for young people. Today we want to highlight the support needed by young people as they enter the workplace. Our research has made us alive to the risks facing young people not in education, employment or training. But we know what works: > the more holistic, integrated and structured approaches are the most effective in helping young people to enter the workplace > work placements with *sustained post-placement support* are key to facilitating the labour market entry of young people. Follow the links to read lots of practical examples on post placement support from EU member states, freely available to explore in our report on Placement Support. In Parliament House on Monday, I attended the launch by Professor Barney Glover AO, Commissioner, Jobs and Skills Australia of the "Better Together – The Jobs and Skills Report 2024”. This comprehensive report is a crucial step towards addressing Australia's current and future workforce needs, and it highlights the importance of fostering inclusive participation, understanding today's workforce, and shaping the future workforce. One key theme that resonates deeply with my electorate of Fowler is the need for a more systematic approach to alternative pathways for our young people. As we navigate the evolving job market, it's essential to ensure that our youth have access to diverse and viable career options. Without this, there's a real risk that many will drift away from education and miss out on opportunities for secure, safe, and fairly paid work. I look forward to further engaging with Jobs and Skills Australia to work together to ensure that young people in Fowler and Western Sydney have the opportunity to pursue a viable career path. I aspire to belong to a society that puts the effort into collapsing barriers to dignified work for all Young Australians who could experience gainful, safe, and adaptive workforce participation. For too long young people have been blamed for not being proactive enough in job seeking, quitting unsafe jobs, accused of being snowflakes whatever that is, and even blamed for not being skilled? The blame has always been a toxic attitude that Australia ought to jettison once and for all. Low-fee industry skilling that is self-paced backed in with dynamic peer learning opportunities can bring about transformational outcomes for Young Aussies. This is no untested concept, it’s proven by many leading workforce and jobseeker services. Young Australians deserve the best chances to be able to experience social thriving, career fulfilment, active citizenship, and an iconic role in Australian culture. I know who I am backing, and Intergenerational dialogue is a way towards providing better outcomes for young Aussies, by inviting other generations to recognise both real potential and some of the work-limiting challenges. #YoungAustralians

The evaluation of Working Wales, a careers and employability support service delivered by Careers Wales since 2019, offers valuable insights and recommendations for future service needs. In 2019 the Welsh Government commissioned Wavehill to conduct a full programme evaluation. Over the last five years, we have developed a comprehensive evaluation framework and extensive evaluation reports on different aspects of this service. The latest reports in this series include: 👉 The Rural and Urban Paper: This examines geographical accessibility and differences in service delivery between rural and urban areas. 👉 The Refugee and Migrant Paper: This assesses how Working Wales provides support for refugees and migrants. It highlights strengths and identifies gaps for future delivery. 👉 The Strategic Report: This provides summative findings from the evaluation and offers recommendations to enhance future service delivery. These comprehensive assessments have involved consultations with a wide range of key stakeholders and customers. The work reflects the Welsh Government’s commitment to supporting the diverse needs of the Welsh population. It emphasises the importance of tailored support to address the different employability needs that people face.
