Special thanks to Paul Nicolaou from Business Sydney, the Australian Chamber of Commerce & Industry (ACCI), and Ron Maxwell from VERTO (Australia) for hosting an amazing event on Wednesday. With Professor Barney Glover AO, Commissioner for Jobs and Skills Australia, we discussed the key roles of education, training, and migration in addressing skills shortages. We also discussed how to strengthen these connections and open new doors for positive change. Through an enhanced program and network, Business Sydney is poised to deliver greater impact for businesses in Sydney. Highlighted are some of the areas where Superior Training Centre are ready to step up and partner for Australia's future: -Future workforce planning in trade sectors and their impact on South Western Sydney communities. -Exploring skills-based hiring and aligning VET and higher education for a cohesive skills system. -Tackling skills shortages through focused re-skilling and up-skilling. -Prioritizing the increased participation of the First Nations workforce. -Addressing gender challenges in the workplace, which STC has taken steps towards through the campaign Women in Trades. Thrilling opportunities lie ahead in shaping Australia’s future, with a strong focus on trades, jobs, and skills – let’s make it happen! #FutureOfWork #SkillsDevelopment #Inclusion #JobsAndSkillsAustralia #SuperiorTrainingCentre #sydney #apprenticeshipSupportAustralia #Careers Troy Williams Christopher Campbell Joseph Pilo

Tackling Australia's Skills Shortage with Innovative Initiatives Despite low unemployment rates and a robust labour market, Australia faces a growing skills shortage, with recruitment difficulty sitting at 54% according to a February 2024 report by Jobs and Skills Australia. Addressing this challenge calls for a united approach involving vocational and higher education, industry stakeholders, and a streamlined migration system. However, the Great Place To Work Certified™ community in Australia is taking notable strides by engaging with underserved communities to bridge these workforce gaps and build future talent. Key Initiatives Include: Educational Outreach: Engaging with primary and high school students in underrepresented areas, including Indigenous and rural communities, and focusing on aspiration-building in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) careers. Empowerment Programs: Conducting well-being and leadership programs, particularly for girls and women in Indigenous communities. Apprenticeships and Traineeships: Offering school-based opportunities for First Nations students and at-risk youth, providing a pathway into in-demand industries. Inclusive Hiring: Actively recruiting individuals with disabilities, refugees, and older women seeking to re-enter the workforce, supported by job-readiness programs. These efforts by certified companies not only address critical skill gaps but also inspire a new generation to envision and achieve brighter futures, thereby fostering a more inclusive and equitable society. Some really good stuff in this report much of which chimes with our own Making Skills Work conclusions. Like the reference to education and skills as related but different, pragmatic reflection on three way funding sources State, employer and learner plus the acceptance that the UK economy is best served by an inclusive and fair UK wide solution. Would have liked to see a bit more about how the provider ecosystem could be reshaped to work together in the most effective way for the needs of learners, employers and regions. Everyone has a role to play and that certainty means we can balance funding accordingly
