I’m excited for November, when I’ll have the privilege to guest lecture for the Social Innovations course. Behind the scenes, I continue sharing insights from the Untapped Talent report, a project that sheds light on how we can better integrate diverse talent into Scotland’s economy. The 18 recommendations outlined in the report are a catalyst for shifting perspectives across sectors, ensuring that Scotland’s rich diversity is reflected in our workforce. Universities are an ideal place to start these crucial conversations and implement meaningful change, especially when students are contributing so much to the economy. One research respondent noted, “I will have paid £240k for my degree, only to face a starting salary of £30k.” This underscores the need for urgent action to bridge the gap between education and meaningful career progression. The Untapped Talent report helps reshape the narrative around ethnic minority communities, especially those from African backgrounds. Contrary to the perception that they are “hard to reach” or in need of constant employability support, this group is over-prespected but under-served when it comes to actual career growth opportunities. It’s time to move beyond rhetoric and provide real access to opportunities for growth. Let’s start by shifting perspectives and ensuring that diverse talent is not only included but empowered to thrive. #SocialInnovation #DiversityAndInclusion #UntappedTalent #LeadershipDevelopment #CareerGrowth #EthnicMinority #HigherEducation #BridgingTheGap
