I’ve had the opportunity to work with some of the most amazing people. We have navigated some of the most challenging contracts, facilitated sensitive spaces, trained some of the most divisive groups, and worked through our own triggers, trauma, and internal challenges. We have lost team members, had to shut down operations for a period of time, and have still, somehow managed to show up with all of our hearts. We have shared some vulnerable and honest moments. All because we take the time to reflect on the Cultivating Safe Spaces framework, have asked ourselves “how am I showing up, who am I in all this and what is on my heart and what and how am I contributing to this space?” I don’t know many workspaces or professional spaces that have the capability to show up with this amount of vulnerability and most of all, accountability to show up when challenged. Leadership requires you to show up and listen when you’ve been challenged. If you are unable to do that, it’s time to question whether you’re driven to lead with love and support or fear and ego.

Board chairs and executive leaders: As the election year draws to a dramatic final week, here are 5 themes to cover with your teams to make this week productive and positive. 1. Validate that it's a time of uncertainty and that it's quite alright to be feeling it and wondering about where things go from here for our country or even for our work - and that's hard to handle. 2. Acknowledge that there may only be 2 major candidates but the number of different opinions and lived experiences on your team is far more diverse than that - and it is not productive or fair to make assumptions about anyone's opinions on the election or any topic. 3. Affirm that voting is a civic duty and everyone is encouraged to make a plan to do so. And if work obligations are making that difficult for you or anyone on your teams, find a way to make it possible for everyone to have time to vote. 4. Reaffirm your organization's mission/purpose, its core values and its end of year goals, none of which change no matter what happens. 5. Call on everyone to commit to civility and fellowship regardless of the outcome of the election because we are indeed all part of one nation and at least in this workplace, one community with shared purpose.
