China Mobile squeezes more ARPU from 5G subscribers China’s operators have enjoyed some success in raising ARPUs on the back of their 5G rollouts, meanwhile subscriber growth is winding down towards saturation. The latest financial results from the big three show 5G numbers tapering off, after a sustained growth period that has endured since the rollout began at the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic. The trend shows up well for China Mobile, the world’s largest MNO by most metrics, except now for data carried. Over the last year, ending March 31st 2024, China Mobile added 125 million 5G subscribers (defined as those with a 5G package) although a substantial proportion do not have a 5G phone – a curiosity that we intend to investigate. But over the last three months, the rise has slowed to just 4.6 million, and actually dipped by 2 million from February to March, ending at 799 million, according to the company’s monthly customer data report. #5G #mobilenetwork #data

Middle-mile may have become more important than ever in terms of fiber networks because all the last-mile networks that will be built for BEAD need to connect to something. But honing-in on a precise definition of middle-mile is a challenge even for industry insiders. At the Fiber Connect show, a panel of middle-mile professionals had a spirited discussion. But when the moderator, Rick Talbot from ACG Research, tried to pin panelists down on the definition of middle-mile, he had little success. Joe Pellegrini, president and COO with Great Plains Communications, said, “It’s an end-to-end system with real estate, points of presence…. I think #6G will need a complete rework of the idea of localised roaming and network interconnect. There will be multiple scenarios and greater frequency of devices switching to alternative networks from an MNO, or connecting to other users locally. This fits the #6Greset concept. There are two sets of scenarios, with some overlap: 1) User switches to (or combines) a local network, for improvements in coverage, performance, cost, energy use or privacy 2) User connects to another user or resource locally "at the edge" without traffic going via a distant point. This improves latency, congestion, coverage etc as well. Some use-cases and scenarios: - Local roaming & federation onto indoor #WiFi for better coverage, lower energy consumption and (often) reduced latency to cloud-based applications - Local interconnect with 3rd party networks such as #neutralhost for urban densification, remote / rural and indoors - Both roaming and local interconnect between public and private #5G / 6G networks at a site - for instance for IoT devices moving outdoors from indoors - Local breakout or local interconnect between two different MNO networks, for instance for low-latency communications or gaming between two users at the same venue - Direct device-to-device (or "sidelink") connectivity, for instance for sending files and images/video locally in a similar fashion to AirDrop or casting to a TV. Also for public safety and #V2X at longer ranges - Direct peering (and perhaps radio coordination) between Wi-Fi networks, or between #private5G networks - either locally or as federations - Extending a device's Wi-Fi hotspot capability to offering a 5G / 6G local hotspot in unlicensed spectrum - Localised use of satellite or HAPs connections in particular regions (eg small dead zones) - Various proximity-sensing and positioning use-cases - Alternative local technologies such as Bluetooth, UWB, light - even USB cables - Links to #edgecomputing, #NetworkAPIs and AI A lot of different things will get blended into each other here. Arguably this is actually multiple categories, with a plethora of standards involved. But what I'm seeing is a "superset" of localised network events. There's no real parallel in #5G. That has lots of architectural and regulatory implications. Are any of these things billable? Does lawful intercept apply, and if so where and how? Is the 3GPP core involved, and if so, for control or user planes, or both? What about shared #OpenRAN CU & DUs? What happens if there's a conflict between (say) energy efficiency and privacy, or coverage vs. regulatory control? How much is driven by device or OS connection managers, vs the network(s)? Will there be huge volumes of signalling? This is outside traditional #mobile & IMT / #5G thinking. In today's rapidly evolving landscape, telcos are grappling with complex challenges driven by economic pressures, fierce competition, regulatory changes, and shifting customer expectations. The 2023 American Customer Satisfaction Index (ASCI) highlighted this issue, ranking Internet Service Providers at the bottom across all industries for Customer Service - below airlines, hospitals, and even the US postal service. However, there are signs of improvement. ISPs achieved an overall score of 71 on the ACSI's 100-point scale in 2023, the highest rating since the index began measuring ISPs in 2013. This upward trend reflects a growing recognition of the importance of customer experience. Creating a truly customer-centric experience starts with leveraging high-quality data and analytics to anticipate and address customer needs proactively. The next-generation customer experience (CX) philosophy moves beyond traditional reactive approaches to embrace agile, predictive strategies. By integrating customer, operational and network data, telcos can anticipate needs, resolve issues before they arise, and deliver highly personalised experiences across all channels. To excel in customer experience, telcos must think beyond metrics. A comprehensive cultural shift is essential - breaking down business-unit silos and fostering agility through cross-functional teams. This enables telcos to respond swiftly and effectively to evolving customer expectations. Vendor lock-in has long been a barrier to flexibility and choice, but today's customers expect seamless interoperability across networks and devices. Telcos must prioritise creating an open, customer-centric ecosystem where connectivity is not just seamless but optimised for exceptional user experience. In a recent NRTC webinar, panelists discussed some possible pitfalls to the BEAD application process that could emerge for rural electrics and telcos in some states.
