BT wobbles amid restructuring plan UK operator BT Group has been doing well to claw its way back to a profitable and streamlined enterprise, under the guidance of CEO Allison Kirkby. Earlier this year, Kirkby announced a restructuring that would cut operational costs and lead the company to a modest cash flow in 2025, changes which sent the share price up by 20% at one point in the year. This month however, the UK incumbent lowered its revenue outlook for the full year, and said its annual costs would increase by £100 million because of new tax payments. Samsung pins hope on Open RAN for improved network revenues Though Samsung Electronics slightly beat its own expectations in its third quarter sales and operating profit last week, the news from its network unit was disappointing. The vendor is stuck in a tight spot and is losing share to Nokia and Ericsson. This could be a turning point; where Samsung decides whether the juice is worth the squeeze in the mobile networking business. Telia banks on autonomous vehicles in network overhaul Swedish operator Telia is building an autonomous network so that it can offer a new range of B2B services and has put autonomous vehicles at the fore of the business plan. Telia’s Head of IT Production, Vincenzo Procopio outlined the steps the operator is taking to build a fully autonomous network and the ensuing IT transformation at a recent OSS/BSS event hosted by Ericsson in Paris. #autonomousdriving #network

5G Broadcast on course for commercialization in Europe It looks increasingly likely 5G Broadcast will soon be delivering TV content commercially in parts of Europe at least. Germany’s second largest TV tower company Vantage Towers has just signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with testing group Rohde & Schwarz (R&S) to drive commercial 5G Broadcast services starting in 2026. Celona injects zero trust into private 5G security Security has been considered a liability for providers of private 5G technology, but Celona is trying to make it a trump card by playing on zero trust as a way of uniting industrial IT and OT (operational technology) systems within a common wireless network. The success of this approach will depend on whether enterprises believe that the combination of zero trust architecture and 5G network slicing can deliver the security as well as performance demanded by industrial enterprises. #5G #wireless #network

Telefonica’s environmental credentials questioned Telefonica has claimed that its services helped avoid 69.2 million tons of carbon dioxide emissions in 2023, across Spain, Germany, and Brazil. Unfortunately, the lack of explanation behind the calculations makes for a frustrating read, and a comical gaff in the announcement itself does not help the case. The claim is based on Telefonica’s Connected Living Report 2023. Further work has led Telefonica to the 69.2 million tons figure, extrapolating from the central messaging about the environmental benefits of digitalization – enabled by networks like Telefonica’s. Singtel, Ericsson launch NaaS but may not win over all MNOs Singtel and Ericsson have teamed up to provide a Network-as-a-Service product that enterprise customers will be able to use for ordering and provisioning 5G services, such as network slices. The pair also plan to sell the product to other operators, to use in their own networks, although this element of the service will be highly complex for operators with legacy networks to adopt. This deal combines Ericsson’s Service Orchestration and Assurance (SO+A) platform with Singtel’s Paragon platform via APIs. #5G #networks #NaaS
