Why H2 will miss out on the rail transportation market Data indicates that global emissions are projected to rise by 0.8% this year, while the world needs to reduce them by 45% within five years to stay on track to limit warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius. In this landscape, efficiency is crucial. Yet recent examples from the US fall short of this mark, in part due to the inclusion of hydrogen trains. California will debut its first hydrogen-powered train as part of a $97 million federal funding award supporting zero-emission rail technologies. This hydrogen fuel cell train will replace one of ten diesel locomotives on the Sacramento Valley Railroad, a short freight line operated by Patriot Rail. About us
Rethink Energy is designed to forecast the changing energy landscape and its investment possibilities as renewables begin to take over from conventional fossil fuels. Rethink Energy is about rethinking not only the technologies which lay behind energy generation and storage, but also about the business models and route to market for an entire fledgling industry. The fossil fuel industry is a tough competitor and lobbies governments with unlimited funds, and positions poisonous short termism as the ONLY way forward. The era in which it questions the existence of man made climate change is over, this is the era of what we do about it and who makes money out of the process. Spanish renewables menaced by negative pricing Negative price events are consistently growing more frequent from one year to the next in Europe. That’s good for battery developers, but for renewable generation it’s a menace – at best making batteries mandatory, at worst reflecting a broad trend of price cannibalization. As prices become more volatile – inevitable as intermittent sources become more prevalent – then it’s natural that batteries will become the most appealing form of renewable energy power project. It’s perhaps surprising to see it happen so soon, however. #battery #wind #solar #renewableenergy

China will be the first green H2 mass-producer China’s National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) has directed provincial governments to advance green hydrogen production as part of a broader green energy strategy. The initiative, outlined in the “Guiding Opinions on Vigorously Implementing Renewable Energy Replacement Action” issued with the National Energy Administration and other federal ministries, targets specific economic sectors for decarbonization through hydrogen. #hygrogen #greenhydrogen #greenenergy

Carbon fiber passes 300,000-ton production capacity Carbon fiber production is technologically challenging as well as energy-intensive. Up to now, the former has been an obstacle to manufacturing it in China, while energy costs have been an obstacle to producing it at affordable prices in the West too. But in the past year or two, carbon fiber has emerged as one of the materials which the Chinese have figured out how to produce at scale, bringing the necessary technical expertise inside China’s borders as well as investing in a dramatic expansion of production capacity – increasing supply and halving the price from $180,000 per ton to $100,000 per ton so far. When it comes to the #aviation industry the election news won’t be welcomed. The sector is yet to fully recover after the #supplychain issues inflicted by the COVID-19 pandemic, and is not set to flourish during Trump's second term. With major manufacturers like Airbus and Boeing planning on ramping up product output, it looks like things won’t get any cheaper for them. Airbus’ publicly stated goals of production rates are even more aggressive than those before 2020. And after plenty of lay-offs in staff, skilled labor will also be hard to come by. A sentiment shared by Boeing and even smaller manufacturers. Clean-aviation specifically will also be dampened in the US as Trump’s tariffs will further hinder the cause. Companies looking to import raw materials needed for electrical components heavily prevalent in #battery-#electric or #hydrogen fuel cell airplanes will most likely see a premium added to their bills.

Norway ramping up green shipping efforts Enova, Norway’s government agency, has invested over NOK 777 million (approximately $70.92 million) into five hydrogen production projects aimed at enhancing the Norwegian maritime industry’s hydrogen utilization. This funding initiative seeks to create a sustainable and accessible hydrogen value chain along Norway’s coastline, from Slagentangen in the southeast to Bodø in the north. #maritime #shipping #hydrogen
