Last week we were offered some business funding through Funding Circle UK they looked at all our accounts, bank statements, did credit checks etc. even had directors guarantees in place. We were sent all the documents which were signed, ID’s verified and witnesses signed. This was only for them to pull the offer at the last minute as they do KYC checks AFTER the paperwork is signed. Only then did they decide they didn’t want to work with us as we are ourselves, a lender (albeit personal loans). With the FCA’s Consumer Duty now in place and news that the FCA are (very rightly) raising concerns over banks and lenders refusing services to certain industries based on ‘reputational risk,’ I hope we see a welcome change in the market. p.s Funding Circle UK, maybe do your full KYC checks BEFORE you make companies sign all the paperwork etc. Ajmal Raja James West Lisa Jacobs

Car buying service. A good life-hack to grab a bargain when buying a car in the UK. I've always bought and sold my own cars and have owned several hundred over the course of the last 30 years. However, since Covid, going to car auctions to buy a car in the UK has been more more difficult and problematic than pre-2020. Car auctions do offer good value typically saving you £3000 or more on a £15,000 - £20000 second hand car (3 to 5 year old car) compared to a dealer's forecourt and about £1000-1500 versus a private seller on eBay motors or Autotrader (many of whom are moonlighting as car dealers). Car auctions also give you access to cars that are not available to Joe Public, such as very low mileage and well maintained vehicles that have been used for 1-3 years on the government's Motability scheme. The problem with car auctions for a private buyer is that some of them are trade only and those auctions that let private buyers bid will charge a buyer's premium of hundreds of pounds. Registered motor traders, however, pay half of that buyer's premium. A buying service lets you proxy bid through the motor trader, and if you win pay the auction directly; so no credit risk. The cost difference of the reduced buyer's premium is usually greater than the trader's fee of a few hundred pounds. In effect, they are working for free. You need not attend the auction and they will even arrange delivery of the car. I've used such services to buy 6 cars over the last few years and find myself using them more and more as they are time saving, convenient and have always been good value for money.

After 8 amazing years in Nottinghamshire, we’ve returned to Yorkshire after an 18-year break! 🏡 Here are a few tech reflections from the family physical move; 1. The conveyancing process needs innovation! If you're working on a startup to tackle this, I'm interested in investing. 📑 2. 35 of 37 address changes could be done fully digitally via Mobile Banking. Just Hargreaves Lansdown & Yorkshire Building Society who need to enable this via Mobile! I’m sure HL has this in hand with Ramki S.! 🏠 3. Overnight batch processing is alive and well. We were up until 1 am sorting out school systems, post the batch run! 🕰️ 4. Buying local & directly has its major perks. A rental van mishap from a national firm who allowed online bookings even when they didn’t have have a vehicle, showed us the value of going direct & local! 🚐 5. There’s always been examples of tech looking for problems (even if they don’t exist). In 2024, it's AI seeking problems; in the 1980s, well, let's just say it was a different story! 🚽 (see picture from the ‘new house’) 😂 If you're in the Harrogate/Leeds area and up for breakfast, I'd love to catch up!
