Innovation is central to the transition to net zero, and the financial sector is not immune to this. To best support our clients in their transition, banks must continue to evolve. I discussed with Peter Cripps the areas at the frontier that Barclays is exploring, in particular: * Developing transition finance, essential for the decarbonisation of hard to abate, high-emitting sectors * Addressing the financing gaps faced by climate technology companies where collaboration with governments, business and industry to find solutions is key We know that we don’t have all the answers. Peter Takaendsa, Head: Equities at Mergence Investment Managers commented on the MultiChoice Canal+ deal in this The Business Times article, which also dealt with the fee structure for non-executive directors and the standing down of former Chair Imtiaz Patel. Peter said it made sense for Canal+ to continue buying up MultiChoice shares as much as they can at a price below their formal offer of R125, as long as their shareholding remains below 50%. The continuing pace of share purchases by Canal+ suggests they wish to complete the transaction as soon as they are able. We definitely need to move to making our pensions funded, and recycle these funds into the local economy to drive growth and invest in the services we need. We also agree that we need many more suitable financial products for pensioners to supplement their incomes, equity release is one but there are others such as retirement interest only mortgages, and hybrid variants. These need to be funded by the pension savings, and Solvency UK should be a good step forward to make this happen. Other countries already connect the pension savings with the mortgage market, Perenna will be the enabler in the UK. #mortgages #laterlifelending #equityrelease

Regulatory pressure continues to build in the wealth management sector, as this week the FCA took action against London Stone Securities Limited for failing to deliver good outcomes for clients. As a result, the firm is now restricted from undertaking regulated activities, charging further fees to existing clients, or taking on new clients without permission. All financial promotions must be withdrawn, and assets kept within the business. The FCA emphasised the issue of excessive fees without clear justification, particularly with low-value investment portfolios, compounded by charges not being communicated or agreed upon with clients in advance, some of whom exhibited vulnerable characteristics. This action follows a data request sent to firms in December 2023, with supervisory interventions already in place from a previous data request at the end of 2022. #FCA #WealthManagement #FinancialRegulation

En route to Newcastle for our next Independent Advisory Board meeting (https://lnkd.in/e2UJExpr) and I've been reflecting on some personal learns from the last couple of years working with this great group of individuals and might be useful for setting up any board. ✨️Don’t Be the Smartest in the Room (Wasn't a difficult task for me 🙃) Let’s face it – if you’re the smartest one there, you’ve probably assembled the wrong team. Surround yourself with people who know what you don’t. It might hurt your ego, but it’ll boost your business. 🤫The Quiet Ones Often Have the Best Ideas (Unlike me, try to give everyone time to speak) It’s always the ones sitting quietly who drop the game-changing insights. Meanwhile, I’m probably over-explaining something obvious. Make sure you give the quieter voices a chance – their ideas might surprise you. 📑Some Need Time to Digest Papers (Like Me), Others Just Wing It Let’s be honest, some of us need a bit more time to read and understand things (guilty), while others can roll with it on the spot. Cater for both – send papers in advance for the planners and keep meetings lively for the quick-thinkers. 🤓Clear Roles (Because No One Wants to Guess What They’re Doing) People are busy – the last thing they want is confusion about what they’re supposed to be doing. Spell it out clearly: who’s doing what, how much time, and what they need to deliver. Saves everyone from awkward guessing games. ♻️Foster Honest Feedback (Yes, Even When It Hurts) You want a board that challenges you, not one that nods politely while your ideas sink the ship. Build a culture where people aren’t afraid to say, “That’s a terrible idea.” You’ll thank them later (and cry about it less). Any thoughts or tips from your experience?
