The role of AI and new technology to aid cardiology “As cardiology starts to face staffing shortages and continued decreases in CMS payments, Biga believes technology advances need to be leveraged in cardiology to help improve outcomes, make workflows more efficient to do more with less, and to help cut costs.” “Many of the solutions that can help were displayed on the expo floor, including telehealth and real-time remote monitoring systems. "I think this area will experience an explosion in use," Biga said. Another major area that will likely see an explosion of use is artificial intelligence (AI). She said AI will begin playing a rapidly growing role in cardiology in the coming years to augment cardiologists and other clinical staff. And not just on the front lines of patient care, but also in the back offices where AI will play a growing role in IT systems, smoothing workflow, analytics, automated quality metrics capture and many other areas. "We must use AI to reduce administrative burdens and improve patient outcomes," Biga explained. “

Insights from the "Pharma & Medtech – Partnering with Entrepreneurs" panel at Tech Tour's Mental and Brain Health Event The pharma business follows a product lifecycle logic and startups have a role to play all along that lifecycle from discovery, to conception, to development, to evidence-generation, to regulatory to commercialisation. The trick to working with Eisai Co., Ltd. is to find a match in the two main areas in which we operate: oncology and neurology. (who would have thought so?) "At Roche digital health products are very welcome, but not as a business per se. They can enhance and support the existing business." Advice to startups: - a new product launch costs 4-5 bn on average - anything that can increase scientific confidence that your molecule is on the right track - anything that helps to speed things up, reduce cost or increase precision - anything that increases bureaucracy in a clinical trial or in daily practice, will not see adoption. - co-create whatever you do with patients Pharma is a highly regulated industry. Regulators act as air traffic controllers as well as police. The trick is to engage with them as air traffic controllers, not as police. There is a big gap to bridge: Pharma build something once over a long period of time and it stays that way. Digital startups move fast bring something to market and make many iterative improvements over time. Be clear about what it is you are trying to do. Try to be as precise as possible. Less is more. In pharma you typically have one person that is triaging opportunities. Try to make their life as simple as possible. Your solution has to meet the operational requirements of pharma companies. Don't go to pharma companies with your investor pitch. Think about what problem you can solve for them! If you just need money to keep going that's not a partnership. The pair discuss success stories of startups which have successfully sold to the NHS, before assessing whether companies and suppliers need to take more care in ensuring they are pitching the right solution to the right organisation. They give their views on whether the NHS procurement process has become overcomplicated, a point raised in a session at Rewired 2024, and speculate whether the forthcoming Procurement Act (which was originally due to come into force in October 2024, but has been delayed until February 2025) will solve some issues and make it easier for those selling in the health technology sector. The UK's delicate industrial strategy balancing act: our service industry must embrace GenAI, but the risk is that we hand our future to US BigTech. My article in Bright Blue's new collection of essays on the impact of Generative AI, alongside such luminaries as Kenneth Cukier Rose Luckin Gerard Grech Tom Watson. "It is easy to be cynical about endless promises surrounding the transformative potential of AI. However, even if the current break-neck pace of technological development were to slow down, we are already seeing the first stirrings of a productivity revolution, especially in the services industry. This matters because the UK is the second-biggest exporter of services in the world, and, at present, we face a conundrum. If we do not embrace the AI opportunity, then we risk falling behind and losing our competitive edge. But, if we do fully embrace AI, we risk handing the keys to our economy over to the US tech giants on whose AI platforms our technological future depends." Let's hope that the next Government has the bandwidth and vision to focus on both aspects of this challenge. 3 noteworthy acquisitions were announced in #DigitalHealth last week, moving the total to 76 acquisitions in 2024 till date. - On Tuesday, Switzerland-based Mediktor announced the acquisition of Sensely, a San Francisco-based digital healthcare provider that pioneered an empathy-driven conversation platform to support hospital systems and insurance services with world-class member engagement. - On Thursday, Carevīve was acquired by Health Catalyst. The acquisition strengthens Health Catalyst's position in the digital healthcare market, expanding its capabilities in patient engagement and care coordination. - On Friday, Doktor.se announced that it acquired competitor Doktor24. The combined entity will provide a comprehensive suite of digital healthcare services, including telemedicine consultations, patient engagement platforms, and data analytics capabilities. Compared to last year, the total number of acquisitions is still trending significantly lower. "Why have you chosen to pivot into healthcare?" One of the greatest privileges I enjoy in Adopt-A-Doc is the opportunity to speak to a wide range of healthtech #founders. To note, over 90% of these founders come from a technical or commercial background - rather than clinical.
