🔥 Last week’s Retail Technology Show in London had us buzzing! Here are 10 interesting insights from the speaking sessions that we’re still thinking about: 🤖 Vineta Bajaj, CFO at Rohlik Group, formerly of Ocado Group, explained that technologies such as #automation and #robotics shouldn’t be assessed with short-term profit in mind, because their value is evident over time, as they create customer stickiness by driving speed and convenience. 📊 Paul Wilkinson, Product Director at Deliveroo, said the food delivery company only works because of #AI - it wouldn’t be possible to analyze routes and optimize the way Deliveroo does without a powerful algorithm that decides how to prioritize and manage tasks. 🤝 John Bates, Technology Director at Morrisons, highlighted that technology is meant to unlock more time with the customer for store associates and improve the in-store shopping experience. 🔀 Craig Ash, Managing Director UKI at SWAROVSKI, emphasized that a channel-agnostic shopping experience is now the basic expectation for the UK customer, and that leveraging the experience of store associates to identify pinch points is crucial. 👜 Gavin Williams, CDO at Creed and formerly of FARFETCH, foresees #luxury marketplaces will go back to the basics to drive growth: targeting the VIP clientele, offering personal concierge services, and highly-curating the product offering with a “less is more” approach for an added layer of exclusivity. 👍 Paul Sims, Chief Architect at Primark, talked about bringing staff on the journey with technology, as they’re the ones who need to test, learn, and adopt new technology innovations. 👀 Camellia Spaczynska, Head of Retail Operations at Paul Smith, and Toni Scarpaci, Head of Omni-Operations & CRM at Max Mara Fashion Group, discussed how brands are increasingly focused on capturing the data from people that are ‘just looking’ (approx. 75% of in-store footfall) to enable sales associates to outreach afterwards in a personalized approach. ⚠️ Nikki Baird from Aptos Retail cautioned retailers not to buy new tech such as AI and just forget about it; constant re-evaluation and optimization are key. ♻️ Simon Finch, Supply Chain Director at Harrods, said #sustainability should not be viewed as a cost, but as an opportunity to be more efficient and to innovate. ⛔️ Corin Dennison, Director at adidas, warned that tackling loss prevention with technology straddles a fine line between minimizing shrinkage and creating friction in the shopping journey, a concern that Mohit Paul, CRO at Extenda Retail, also shared. "Before joining The Build Chain, the company's procurement process was inefficient. The slow and manual process of having to contact merchants had led to the company relying heavily on pre-existing quotes and agreed rates from suppliers. Without realising, the company has been overpaying for materials..." The early bird maximises returns from excess and obsolete (E&O) stock. 🐥 Many electronic manufacturers wrongly delay redistributing their inventory until the end of the fiscal year. Foresight is crucial in managing excess. Component Sense Account Manager, Monika Simionescu, explains, "The majority of companies do not take action regarding their excess stock until after the year-end inventory. This causes a mad rush and does not allow enough time to get the best possible price." Working ahead allows enough time for E&O stock to be listed and gain traction.
