    Social Services

Help for Heroes provides support to injured armed services personnel and their families - much of this support requires extended periods of assistance as veterans recover from both physical and psychological conditions manifested during terms of duty. Veterans give so much to keep us safe and protect our collective freedoms and we should all consider how we can welcome them back to civilian life and our communities.

A generic management framework designed to be used during a “phase transition” between pre- and post events, and characterised by the interoperability of distributed simulation models, and the collection and sharing of structured and unstructured data via cloud services and “connected devices”, is essential for the consistent provision of highly effective responses. We explore this framework from a science and innovations perspective, advocating “antifragility” for emergency response system designs. For antifragility systems, failures do not stand for a breakdown or malfunctioning of normal system functions, but rather represent the adaptations necessary to cope with the real world complexity through the management of “robustness trade-offs” as it occurs in dynamic and real-world contexts.

The CREC International Eco-City project is a large, mixed use development in Guiyang, Guizhou Province in central southern China. The project has been identified as a key project of the Guizhou provincial government and one of the top ten tourism projects of the Guizhou tourism industry in its 12th Five-year Plan. The planning land area 2036.51 hectares and total investment is about 50 billion RMB. The total population of the completed development is anticipated to be in the order of 170,000 people. Detailed analysis of the healthcare market by IHG identified that recent policy changes regarding the private healthcare sector
in China will see that many of the historical barriers to the development of a flourishing private health sector being reduced in order to make it easier for private health facilities to become established. The demand projections relating to the market in the Guiyang identifies that the projected ‘VIP’ activity that could be realistically attracted to the new healthcare facility in ‘Sun Valley’ would provide insufficient volume to support a modern multi-specialty hospital and it was therefore recommended that a larger overall catchment was targeted.

It was proposed that the new facility should provide a range of routine as well as emergency services to ensure that residents and visitors to the ‘CREC International Resort’ be treated, stabilised and transferred, if necessary. The hospital includes a sub-acute unit of 15 beds which will primarily serve as a Post-Partum Unit and also provide accommodation for other patients requiring additional convalescence before being discharged.

Cities and their delivery partners face complex choices about what type of future they are seeking to create in order to meet aspirations of their citizens. Different cities will have different visions, reflecting the needs and circumstances of their populations and economic activities. Strain on traditional service delivery from increasing populations poses a significant challenge to the sustainable growth of cities. Managing physical resources, such as energy or water as well as managing healthcare, traffic and city logistics, among others, is a major challenge that cities need to address to ensure sustainable growth in the future. The UK Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS) has commissioned BSI to develop a standards strategy for smart cities in the UK. The strategy identifies the role of standards in accelerating the implementation of smart cities and providing assurance to citizens that the risks are being managed appropriately. Here you’ll find more information about the strategy and current standards-related activities. More recently, The Cities Standards Institute has been launched, a joint initiative of the British Standards Institution (BSI) and the Future Cities Catapult, brings together cities and key industry leaders and innovators to work together in identifying the challenges facing cities, providing solutions to common problems and defining the future of smart city standards.
