🇺🇸 The U.S. Federal departments and offices have just released the "Voluntary Carbon Markets Joint Policy Statement and Principles”. We at International Carbon Registry celebrate more clarity on the direction of this important market and its role in the climate crisis. Notable developments include: • The emergence of multi-stakeholder initiatives that have set out standards and principles for high-integrity credit development and responsible credit use; • Improvements to key crediting methodologies, their guiding standards, and tracking systems; • New and improved analytical products and services that aim to strengthen credit transparency and quality comparability, such as carbon credit rating services; • Technologies to support robust measurement, monitoring, reporting, and verification (MMRV); • Multilateral rules, guidance, and procedures developed under Article 6 of the Paris Agreement and the international aviation sector's global carbon market-based measure, which shape certified emissions reductions and removals that often find their home in VCMs'; and • Advances in the development of market infrastructure to improve transparency and liquidity, as well as the integrity of market transactions.

Very excited to share my latest piece in Forbes - "Adaptation and resilience in corporate climate agendas" If any of the below resonates, esp. with those working on adaptation + resilience and/or corporate climate + sustainability - our team at Riffle Ventures would love to hear from you! Main idea - climate adaptation and resilience can be an innovation driver for companies and we need to accelerate this agenda. 🏭 Most discussions around corporations and their climate agendas focus on if, how, and how quickly, big businesses are reducing their greenhouse gas emissions, as well as decreasing their own negative externalities on the natural environment. 💰 However, in parallel climate change is creating growing financial, infrastructure, health and other risks that could disrupt large companies, some of which is already happening. While the tools and strategies for decarbonization are fairly well-covered, we are only scratching the surface when it comes to building resilience and adapting to a warming planet. 🈺 Of course, emissions and corporate sustainability targets need urgent attention and commitment, but in parallel we need to make sure companies writ large are adapting to and building resilience against climate risks - e.g. droughts, floods, fires, grid instability and weakening infrastructure - are all a growing reality on a warming planet. 🆘 Corporations, regardless of industry and geography will require support across the board in navigating climate change's most pressing threats. The risk of not doing so could have near-term, material impacts on protecting critical infrastructure as well as access to necessary products and services - food and medicine - and could also negatively impact human's themselves - heat stress, job loss, etc. 🤖 There is a growing technology solution set focusing on climate adaptation and resilience, and we need to bridge the gap between between these climate tech startups and the corporate sector. In turn, corporations can have an enormous impact in helping to scale climate innovations and bolster the surrounding ecosystem. Heatmap News ran this great piece by Advait Arun of the Center for Public Enterprise today on illiquidity in certain markets key for decarbonization (e.g. home retrofitting), and reforms in #munibond financing we need to make to channel much-needed project finance to critical projects. 🔅 In a nutshell: municipal bonds are debts issued by state and local government agencies to raise cash. Investors in the muni bond market effectively lend money to these agencies. In lieu of tax revenues — which, naturally, are politically charged and fiendishly difficult to raise through the imposition of new taxes — this is the primary mechanism for government entities to raise funds for various capital projects and general expenditures (such as in public housing or schools). 💡There are, however, a great many problems facing agencies that attempt to fundraise this way, with consequences boding for infrastructure-heavy projects involving long-term capital expenditures — i.e. decarbonization: 📉 Volatility and low-risk investing: muni bonds are quite exposed to interest rate risk and overall market cycles. 💸 Wall Street ratings agencies: many cities across the United States are outright unable to issue muni bonds, thanks to sub-par bond ratings issued by the most powerful ratings agencies (S&P, Moody’s, Fitch). We will need to have serious policy conversations about the ability of high finance institutions to inhibit the revenue raising abilities of local governments. ⚖️ There is no question that states and localities need to play a major, if not the central role in spearheading decarbonization. In 2023, the largest segments in the climate tech vertical were low-carbon mobility, industry, grid infrastructure, intermittent renewable energy sources (solar and wind). 50 VC deals for climate tech companies in 2023 exceeded $150 million, and of these, nine exceeded $500 million. Well, let’s just say it: New York Climate Week is “the new COP.” As our good friends at Sightline said so well, “Vibe-wise, this NYCW centered more on solutions and getting down to brass tacks, rather than outlining high-level problems.” NYCW is where people go to get things done. Sure, it was a mosh pit of decentralized, self-assembling change, but…like NYC itself, the chaos works. Let’s call it: NYCW>COP.

I’ve been doing a deep dive into India’s climate tech space recently, and one thing is clear: it’s a pretty fascinating landscape. 🌍 After scanning through 100+ startups and VC portfolios, there’s a strong pattern I can’t ignore. SaaS-based solutions seem to dominate—especially in areas like agri-tech, freight/logistics, and carbon accounting for industries. 📊 And it makes sense! SaaS is less risky, easier to scale, and fits perfectly into those spaces. ⚙️ But then, when you shift your focus to more hardware-driven interventions, that’s where you see real innovation in energy efficiency, HVAC, air pollution control, and even soil/water management. These are high-risk, capital-heavy sectors that only become profitable when you hit economies of scale. 💰 Here’s what I’m thinking: ▶️ Mitigation (i.e., reducing emissions) is likely going to keep being driven by SaaS tools and decentralization—industries adopting renewable energy, energy efficiency, etc. ▶️But adaptation is a different beast. Especially in India, we need a serious focus on adaptation efforts, like water systems, food security, HVAC, and climate-resilient infrastructure. This is where we need blended finance, and frankly, a lot more attention. 🏦 We’ve got a net-zero by 2070 plan, which is great. But do we have a plan to deal with the reality of 2-4°C temperature increases, extreme weather, and climate-driven migration? 🌡️ That’s the question I keep asking. Right now, in Delhi, we’re spending ₹18,000 on air purifiers just to cope with the pollution. 🏙️ If more cities follow this path of unchecked development, we’ll face the same AQI problems elsewhere. 🌫️ If we can’t solve this at the macro level (policy and governance), can individuals adapt at the micro level to protect their right to clean air? 🤔

I am incredibly excited to share the upcoming release of the Absolute Carbon Standard 🙌. ⚠️ Warning to my non-CDR friends and family, this post contains a lot of industry specific context, I promise to post a simplified explainer soon! Onto the good stuff 😄 ➡️ For the past year Friedel Pretorius, Peter Minor, and the entire Absolute Climate team have been working to solve some of the most challenging monitoring, reporting, and verification (MRV) problems in the carbon credit space. We’ve built a lot, made a ton of progress, and are excited to start sharing key components of what we’ve built. We’ll have more news to come in the coming weeks to months, for now we want to focus on a specific problem we’ve been cranking on - bringing consistency and objectivity to the evaluation of a carbon credit Project’s climate impact. Today carbon credit projects are evaluated in a vacuum. The requirements that a project must meet to issue credits are inconsistent and often rely on subjective judgement. This makes it really hard for Buyers of carbon credits to understand what they’re purchasing, and for Project Developers to differentiate their climate impacts from other projects making similar claims. We’ve been building the Absolute Carbon Standard (ACS) to address these challenges and enable dramatically better MRV. What makes ACS special? ✨ A universal approach for project assessment for all pathways, rather than incompatible methodologies 🍎 Apples-to-apples comparisons between projects, even for dramatically different technologies 🌎 A new assessment model that directly values a project’s impact on the climate, not just how well it compiles to a methodology Over the coming weeks we’ll be publishing a series of explainers on the core components of ACS, culminating in the release of the full standard. With the plethora of climate tech solutions available, something that has been left on the backburner is actually forecasting/measuring the impact of them. The nuance of how AI could not only be an instrument of change, but a litmus test of it as well is one that I think is worth exploring. Announcing SolidSky - GHG-to-Value for Legacy Petrochemicals 🚀 SolidSky has been accepted into Berkeley Lab's Cradle to Commerce Accelerator program funded by DOE Office of Technology Transitions for emerging climatetech startups. Making it into the cohort secures several benefits, including a CRADA to validate the technology in an industry-relevant form factor that will make industry partnerships easier to achieve. ✍ I've been quietly working on SolidSky for a year now, and it started with a thesis: the transition to net-zero requires detaching from the carbon markets and finding economical ways to convert carbon to value, without assuming that electricity prices will arbitrarily converge to 0. With that in mind, I sought out novel methods for utilizing CO2 in ways that would be beneficial to legacy industry, and ultimately stumbled upon the tech that would become SolidSky. 📈 The last few months have been an absolute whirlwind. A cofounder breakup, 5 grant applications, licensing, 547 LinkedIn applicants for my first team roles and 54 interviews to fill them, and the endless cycle of realizing that I have no idea what I'm doing. I'm feeling better about the not knowing part, largely thanks to the incredible team I have been able to form: it is entirely thanks to them I am able to move forward with opportunities like this. This all started with Lucian Sweitzer taking my meeting after a cold email outreach and suggesting I pitch writing this technology into the C2C program back in 2023, and here we are on the other side. 🏭 SolidSky is on a mission to develop catalysts and reactor systems that unlock GHG-to-Value for legacy petrochemical facilities. Our novel catalysts allow for the conversion of CO2 with basic petrochemical feedstocks to create precursor chemicals at costs well below market rates thanks purely to improved energy efficiency, without the needs for carbon credits or tax incentives. Put simply, SolidSky's method of making petrochemicals is less energy intensive than any other method out there, making adoption of carbon capture and utilization systems less daunting.
