Despite the growing variety of electric vehicles being produced the limited availability of nationwide charging infrastructure that remains a significant challenge on the path to widespread EV adoption.   "But this needn’t be the case indefinitely," writes Nicholas D. AA$36.5 million has been set aside to provide 10,000 rebates worth A$3,500 to customers who buy a new electric or hydrogen fuel cell vehicle up to a value of A$70,000, and A$23 million for the WA EV Network to build fast-charging stations along major travel routes. The same grant system will also provide $10 million for not-for-profit and SMEs to install charging infrastructure. Another $4 million will be used to install charging infrastructure at train stations. Interestingly, the subsidy covers fuel cell cars (the Toyota Mirai costs about A$60,000, and the FCEV Toyota Hia-Ace may cost even more). Overall, The Western Australia State Government will invest over A$200 million into electric vehicle adoption and charging infrastructure for the state. Regulation holding back EV future Businesses are installing on-site electric vehicle (EV) charge points for commercial fleets and offering such facilities to the public, but are battling complex regulations and planning laws, Believ research has shown. At present, only 1% of vans, 8% of company cars, and less than 1% of HGVs are electric, but in a major piece of research, charge point operator Believ has found almost all (88%) businesses are already installing EV charging infrastructure. Many (57%) plan to double charging capacity by 2028 and understand the advantage of having their own charging facilities to attract new customers (69%) or use charging revenues to offset any upfront installation costs (72%). But despite this seven out of ten respondents (70%) say projects are delayed by the slow pace, high cost and complexity of working with electricity companies to upgrade the local power supply, and 11% find it a significant barrier. Billions of dollars in funding have been given to companies to build a solid electric vehicle charging infrastructure in the country, however, progress is slow. Recently, the Federal Highway Administration published a request for information regarding electric truck charging infrastructure and technology. The information gathered is supposed to help the federal government in deciding on the deployment of a nationwide charging network. The government wants to hear opinions from electric truck manufacturers, fleet operators, drivers, charging station operators, and electric utilities to make sure everyone's needs and problems are addressed. The FHWA wants feedback on the following categories: • Unique electric vehicle charger and station needs • Vehicle charging patterns • Electric truck charger technology and standardization • Workforce, supply chain, and manufacturing to support charging of electric trucks Another main concern is the potential overcrowding of truck parking with the electric chargers and their positioning, as the VP of OOIDA - Lewie Pugh - has publicly expressed himself on the issue. Here are some of the questions the FHWA wants to get feedback on: • What would be an appropriate maximum distance between electric truck public charging stations along/from an interstate highway? • What are the typical mileage ranges of electric trucks? • What is the expectation for charging and/or dwell times, and how does that vary by use (e.g., local vs. long-haul) or other factors? • What actions are being taken by fleet owners/operators to ensure that necessary power is available in charging locations? Do you think we'll see a significant change in the EV charger infrastructure in the next 2 years, or will it take much longer to create a solid plan?

$1 Trillion Required to Electrify U.S. Commercial Truck Fleet : A new report by the Clean Freight Coalition pegs the total cost of U.S. commercial truck fleet electrification at nearly $1 trillion in infrastructure investment alone, exposing what could be a massive investment gap as policymakers persist with EV adoption mandates. Key findings: $620 billion would be required in charging infrastructure alone, including chargers, site infrastructure and electric service upgrades. Utilities would need to invest $370 billion to upgrade their grid networks to meet the demands of just commercial vehicles. This nearly $1 trillion expenditure does not account for the cost of new battery-electric trucks, which can be two to three times more expensive than their diesel-powered equivalents. For example, a diesel Class 8 truck costs roughly $180,000, while a comparable battery-electric truck costs over $400,000. The CFC urges policymakers to address these cost concerns and infrastructure hurdles so that the transition to electric fleets can go smoothly for the American economy.
