Today is a great day for EV drivers and for e-mobility in Europe, as the Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Regulation (AFIR) comes into effect today. With the AFIR, the EU is giving current and future EV drivers in Europe a great gift: an important step in the development towards a truly free market. Among many other important things, EV drivers will receive free and easy access and full price transparency for public EV charging from 50 kW. The first step, which is taking place today, requires all newly deployed public charge points to comply with the new regulations. In the fundamental economic meaning of a free market, empowered consumers face real competition and pricing based on supply and demand. Until now, the EV charging market has been predominantly characterized by intermediaries. EV drivers have mostly had an indirect influence on the supply side of the market, as they were mostly connected to the charge point operators via E-Mobility Service Providers and Roaming Platforms. Now a development in the charging infrastructure is being set in motion that will enable EV drivers in a much easier way to charge ad-hoc - without prior registration or contracts - by using common payment methods. They will make more informed decisions because they will have full price transparency and will influence pricing through their own demand. E-Mobility Service Providers and Roaming Platforms will continue to create business value for fleet operators and business drivers because they fulfill the vital needs of these business customers with their service. But AFIR is also creating more diversity and choices for EV Drivers. It will certainly be exciting to observe and shape the future development of ad hoc charging and roaming. IMechE Decarbonising the UK Could battery trains decarbonise a third of the UK rail network? A third of the UK rail network does not need to be electrified to reach net zero, and could instead be decarbonised with battery trains. That is the claim of a new report published last week (11 April) by the Railway Industry Association (RIA), which said an order for a fleet of battery-electric trains “should be accelerated as a matter of priority”. The rail network is already 38% electrified, and proposed or in-progress government plans will increase that to 51% over the next 10 years or so, according to the RIA. The new strategy identifies a further 15% of routes for electrification – which, combined with 34% battery trains, could decarbonise all passenger services and 95% of freight.

South East State Creates Massive CNG Mother Station To Serve Entire Region The Enugu State Government says it is constructing a massive Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) mother station at the Ugwu Onyeama area of the state. The mother station would have the capacity to serve the entire South East zone. This was disclosed by the Commissioner for Transportation in the state, Dr. Obi Ozor, after a meeting of the State Executive Council at the weekend. According to him, construction would begin at the ancillary daughter stations in a few weeks’ time. This is part of measures the state government is taking to preserve the environment and also make transportation affordable for citizens. The commissioner added that the state was not only introducing CNG buses but also building the supporting infrastructure to ensure ease of operation and safety of commuters. He noted that the government is also doing its part to not only invest more in buying CNG buses but also to support private sector investment in the transportation space. “The Executive Council resolved that it is very important for the state and her citizens to begin the process of transitioning from petrol to CNG which saves about half of the cost of fuel in our transportation, thereby reducing the cost of transportation for our people. “All these are geared towards bringing safe and affordable and sustainable transportation system. This ties into the infrastructure that is underway – the bus terminals, improved bus shelters, the internet of things, and gadgets in these buses that will allow us to be able to know where our citizens are and make sure that they are safe from any incident. “The state is also creating an enabling environment to attract the right investors within the CNG space and the state has already done that with partnership with Greenville Energy,” he stated.     Source link https://lnkd.in/dqWdawY3

#Wisconsin has lagged behind neighboring states in adding electric vehicle charging stations, but the Badger State is about to take a big leap forward in accessing federal funds to boost its network. The Legislature has sent Gov. Tony Evers a bill allowing private businesses to sell the electricity by hosting units on their properties, rather than only utilities having the option. Wisconsin can now leverage $78 million from a key federal program. Beata Wierzba, government affairs director for the group RENEW Wisconsin, said the stations will no longer be clustered in certain areas, hopefully reducing "range anxiety" in the EV movement. "Currently, you have a few charging companies like Tesla and so on that have charging stations," Wierzba acknowledged. "But they will put them where the market is to support them, not necessarily where people want to go." She hoped it will spur more EV adoption and in the long run, reduce transportation emissions. The federal funds cover up to 80% of costs associated with installing the units. According to industry tracking originations, Wisconsin has about 900 charging stations, putting it behind Minnesota, Michigan and Illinois. Wierzba observed opening the door to federal aid means drivers might see more "fast charging" options during longer trips and they could access them at familiar sites. "It could be a gas station, it could be a grocery store, or a restaurant," Wierzba outlined. State transportation officials have been mapping out a broader network strategy, and the federal component involves adding charging stations every 50 miles along highways.
