Billions of dollars in funding have been given to companies to build a solid electric vehicle charging infrastructure in the country, however, progress is slow. Recently, the Federal Highway Administration published a request for information regarding electric truck charging infrastructure and technology. The information gathered is supposed to help the federal government in deciding on the deployment of a nationwide charging network. The government wants to hear opinions from electric truck manufacturers, fleet operators, drivers, charging station operators, and electric utilities to make sure everyone's needs and problems are addressed. The FHWA wants feedback on the following categories: • Unique electric vehicle charger and station needs • Vehicle charging patterns • Electric truck charger technology and standardization • Workforce, supply chain, and manufacturing to support charging of electric trucks Another main concern is the potential overcrowding of truck parking with the electric chargers and their positioning, as the VP of OOIDA - Lewie Pugh - has publicly expressed himself on the issue. Here are some of the questions the FHWA wants to get feedback on: • What would be an appropriate maximum distance between electric truck public charging stations along/from an interstate highway? • What are the typical mileage ranges of electric trucks? • What is the expectation for charging and/or dwell times, and how does that vary by use (e.g., local vs. long-haul) or other factors? • What actions are being taken by fleet owners/operators to ensure that necessary power is available in charging locations? Do you think we'll see a significant change in the EV charger infrastructure in the next 2 years, or will it take much longer to create a solid plan?

#DYK in 2024 there have been changes to the Government of British Columbia's Go Electric Fleet Charger program? This program will now exclusively focus on providing rebates for EV chargers. BC Hydro's EV Fleet program will take on the role of supporting fleet and infrastructure planning, along with electrical infrastructure installations. These are the top 4 changes to this program: 1️⃣ EV fleet strategy planning and infrastructure support Businesses receiving electrical service will now apply for funding through the EV Fleet program for EV fleet strategy and electrical infrastructure funding. FortisBC electric customers will continue to apply for funding for fleet and infrastructure assessments through the CleanBC Go Electric Fleet Charger program. 2️⃣ Minimum fleet size requirement removed They have removed minimum fleet size requirement of 20 vehicles. Businesses with fleets of all sizes are now eligible to apply. 3️⃣ Medium- and heavy-duty vehicle requirement removed The requirement for businesses to have a minimum of 20 medium- and/or heavy-duty vehicles to be eligible has been removed. If your fleet includes light-duty Class 1 vehicles such as cars, vans and SUVs, you can now apply for this funding. 4️⃣ EV charger rebates All businesses, regardless of fleet size, can continue to apply for rebates for the purchase and installation of EV chargers through the Government of B.C.'s Go Electric Fleet Charger program. We can make this application process easy, get in touch to learn how we can support your transition planning to a future electric fleet: https://buff.ly/3ZnV4ad

The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) is seeking feedback from stakeholders in order to update the agency’s minimum standards and requirements for electric vehicle (EV) charging stations. “As EV charging technology continues to rapidly evolve, we want to ensure our federal standards for EV charging keep pace with private sector innovation, adapt to a quickly evolving industry, and meet the needs of EV drivers,” FHWA Administrator Shailen Bhatt said. “This (request for information) will help us gather important feedback from our federal, state, local, and private partners to inform potential updates to our federal standards with those goals in mind.” Federal requirements allow for alternative types of connectors on federally funded DC fast chargers as long as there is also a Combined Charging System connector. SAE International recently standardized the North American Charging Standard connector, and the majority of automakers will adopt this connector standard beginning in 2025. Adapters will be available this year. The agency will use the information to determine how to best incorporate new technologies and innovations into its minimum standards and requirements for federally funded EV charging stations. The deadline for leaving feedback is April 5. FHWA seeks feedback in coordination with the Joint Office of Energy and Transportation and the Department of Energy. ← Sen. As we work on finalising the Sophus3 EV Index for the latest quarter, this insightful piece from Transport & Environment (T&E) has caught our attention. The analysis fits exactly with our own observations that it is not a lack of public charging infrastructure that is the primary deal breaker for electric vehicle acquisition that many claim it to be. T&E’s study shows that charger roll out has kept pace with the expansion of the European EV fleet, and last year, even outstripped it. The most pressing challenge as we see it, is the differential in pricing between EVs and their fossil-fueled equivalents. Until that is tackled by the appearance of genuinely affordable EVs—or generous incentives—then the urgently needed transition to electric will remain stuck in low gear. The EV Index 2024 Q1 will be published next week, be sure to follow Sophus3 to receive notifications and future insights. #automotivemarketing #digitalmarketing #EVIndex #ev #electricvehicle #tesla

The UK Government will continue to deliver its £381m Local Electric Vehicle fund to councils, which can choose the location of EV chargepoints. Following the approval of the first five local authority applications in February, the government is funding 44 additional councils worth over £185m to support the delivery of thousands of EV chargepoints across England. The local authorities that have already been allocated to the second round of LEVI funding will be able to apply to the fund from 2 April 2024. Technology and Decarbonisation Minister, Anthony Browne, said: “This government has a plan to help speed up the installation of EV chargepoints, which we’re getting on and delivering.” https://lnkd.in/eEWKkE7s #electricvehicles #evcharging #evcharginginfrastructure #uk #governmentinitiatives #evs #chargepoint

The US Joint Office of Energy and Transportation's Q2 2024 update reports a significant increase in public EV charging ports, with the total now exceeding 183,000 Level 2 and DC fast charging ports, marking an increase of over 13,000 in the last quarter. The US is over a third of the way to the Biden administration’s goal of 500,000 public ports by 2030. The National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) Formula Program has also progressed, with eight NEVI DC fast charging stations in six states and numerous states advancing their NEVI plans. Regulation holding back EV future Businesses are installing on-site electric vehicle (EV) charge points for commercial fleets and offering such facilities to the public, but are battling complex regulations and planning laws, Believ research has shown. At present, only 1% of vans, 8% of company cars, and less than 1% of HGVs are electric, but in a major piece of research, charge point operator Believ has found almost all (88%) businesses are already installing EV charging infrastructure. Many (57%) plan to double charging capacity by 2028 and understand the advantage of having their own charging facilities to attract new customers (69%) or use charging revenues to offset any upfront installation costs (72%). But despite this seven out of ten respondents (70%) say projects are delayed by the slow pace, high cost and complexity of working with electricity companies to upgrade the local power supply, and 11% find it a significant barrier.
