Tata Technologies reported its Q1'FY25 earnings yesterday, and the company may have dropped some additional clues about the nature of its work with BMW Group. On the call the company highlighted a recent contract with a "European luxury automotive OEM" to develop a cloud-based virtual platform for System on Chip (SoC) & Motor Control Unit (MCU) hardware architectures. Earlier this year, BMW Group and Tata Technologies announced they will form a joint venture to develop vehicle software for the German automaker. Here is everything you need to know about that announcement. 👨‍💻 Operations: The JV will initially include 100 engineers based in Chennai, Pune, and Bangalore. Headcount is expected to grow to over 1000 engineers in a few years. Engineers will focus on developing software for automated driving, infotainment, and digital services. 💵 Ownership: The JV will be split 50-50 between BMW and Tata Technologies. Car production falls as OEMs prepare for EV models UK car production fell by nearly 8% in the first 6 months of 2024, although the figures were expected as manufacturers retool for electrified models. The new figures, published by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), found factories turned out 416,074 units, 34,094 fewer than in the same period in 2023, following a 26.6% decline in June caused by multiple model changes. But performance was expected as manufacturers retool lines to make electrified models, following some £23.7 billion of UK investment announced last year. Altilium steps up collection of old EV batteries from leading automotive OEMs, pioneering UK full battery circularity Altilium Clean Technology is now receiving end-of-life EV batteries from multiple automotive OEMs, in addition to partners such as SYNETIQ and Connected Energy, as the company continues to build a fully circular EV battery economy in the UK. This customer driven solution allows us to provide car manufacturers with a sustainable option for end-of-life lithium-ion batteries. Once dismantled and shredded, the resulting black mass will be processed at Altilium’s facilities in Devon and upcycled to produce a modern high nickel cathode active material (CAM), ready for direct reuse in the production of new batteries. As the only company in the UK focused on delivering full battery circularity, Altilium’s approach goes beyond traditional recycling. By collecting old EV batteries, processing them into black mass and chemically refining the materials into battery-ready Precursor-CAM and CAM, we are truly closing the loop on the battery supply chain. Altilium’s proprietary EcoCathode™ process enables us to convert black mass into high-value CAM at over 95% efficiency, reducing the cost of battery raw materials by up to 20% and cutting carbon emissions by up to 74% compared to virgin materials. Our full battery circularity model keeps critical minerals within the UK and strengthens our domestic battery industry. While much of the black mass produced by UK recyclers is currently exported to countries like India, Altilium is committed to building green processing infrastructure at home, reducing dependency on international markets and supporting the UK’s energy security. With construction of Altilium’s new mini-commercial recycling facility nearing completion, the company will soon have the capacity to recycle one EV battery per day, enabling production of high volumes of CAM for qualification with automotive OEMs. Through our ground-breaking APC ARMD3 project with JLR, we will demonstrate the production of new battery cells at the UK Battery Industrialisation Centre (UKBIC), with validation by a leading OEM. PARTNERSHIP: Volkswagen and Rivian announce joint venture to develop next-gen SDV platforms EV manufacturer #Rivian Automotive and #VolkswagenGroup (VW) have announced their intention to form an equally controlled and owned joint venture to create next-generation #electrical architecture and software #technology for software-define vehicles (SDVs). The partnership is anticipated to accelerate the development of #software for both companies. Rivian’s zonal hardware design and integrated technology platform will serve as the foundation for #SDV development in the JV for the companies’ vehicles. In the short term, the collaboration is expected to enable VW to use Rivian’s existing #electricalarchitecture and software platform. The partnership’s longer-term ambition is to accelerate VW’s SDV plans and transition to a pure zonal architecture. Now is the right time to be in that space. 🚨 𝐖𝐡𝐞𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐡𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐞𝐧𝐬 🚨 VW has announced the closure of 3 German plants. This will cut 𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐬𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐬 of jobs. To finish, they will cut pay by 🔟%. It is a rough indictment of German industry, competition in the automotive sector, and mismanagement over years. With higher production cost for EVs and competition both national and international markets from Chinese competitors, there seems to be no other way out. This situation could deteriorate further, as work councils and unions warn that cost-cutting by VW will provoke ‘𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐚 𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐝 𝐢𝐭 𝐜𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐧𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫 𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐞.’ It is known that VW needs 𝐓𝐖𝐈𝐂𝐄 the number of Toyota employees per car made… Mismanagement, a Diesel scandal, arrogance in their product, and some entitlement about its standing in the industry over 20 years. Electric vehicles (EVs) and hybrid vehicles will increasingly impact traditional fuel vehicles as new energy technologies continue to optimize. To counteract market headwinds, it would be a more optimistic move to embrace collaboration with electric and hybrid vehicles.

Stellantis partners with battery manufacturer Contemporary Amperex Technology Co., Limited (CATL) and other firms to produce electric vehicles and batteries in Europe. This strategic move is a response to cheaper Chinese imports facing EU tariffs of up to 38% due to alleged unfair subsidies. CEO Carlos Tavares emphasized CATL's expertise in cost-effective lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries, noting a 30% cost-competitive edge held by Chinese players. Stellantis plans to potentially shift battery production plans to include LFP batteries at facilities in Germany and Italy. The company has also joined forces with Chinese EV startup Leapmotor to explore the production of Leapmotor EVs in Europe, with sales expected to begin in nine countries, including Germany, from September. Having a limited presence in China allows Stellantis to be more adaptable than competitors heavily reliant on the Chinese market. Tavares highlighted the need for a proactive approach, questioning whether EU tariffs alone could bridge the cost gap between European and Chinese EV manufacturers. Stellantis aims to achieve a €5 billion annual cost reduction target ahead of schedule, in 2024, through partnerships and strategic initiatives.
