  • A new study by European NGO Transport & Environment (T&E) reveals that recycling battery metals could supply up to 25% of Europe’s EV needs by 2030, offering both sustainability and resource independence. According to the report, materials from end-of-life batteries and gigafactory scrap have the potential to build up to 2.4 million EVs locally in 2030, rising to 15 million EVs by 2040. As well as reducing both extraction and imports of raw materials, recycling in Europe could cut the carbon footprint of sourcing lithium by 19% compared to extracting it in Australia and refining it in China. Other key finds include: ♻️ Recycling EV batteries in Europe could avoid the need to build 12 new mines globally by 2040. ♻️ By the end of the decade, over 100 GWh of production scrap will be available for recycling in Europe. ♻️ By 2035, around 170 GWh of batteries will be available for recycling, rising to 470 GWh by 2040. ♻️ Hydrometallurgy is expected to become the dominant recycling method in the future due to its higher efficiency in recovering valuable materials. “Battery recycling represents a key opportunity for Europe to build a sustainable electric vehicles industry,” notes the report. However, Europe will need to significantly scale up its recycling capabilities, especially in the material recovery stage, to manage the growing volume of spent batteries. By 2030, existing recycling capacities will need to increase 10 times to handle the anticipated volume of feedstock available for recycling. At Altilium, we’re committed to making this vision a reality. Our EcoCathode™ recycling process can recover 95% of the cathode metals, including lithium, from end-of-life batteries, cutting GHG emissions by up to 74% compared to mining virgin raw materials. Our ACT 4 recycling plant in Teesside will recycle over 150,000 EV batteries per annum and supply over 20% of the cathode active materials required in the UK by 2030, making it one of the largest facilities in Europe. We’re proud to be at the forefront of this transition to a circular economy, building critical recycling infrastructure to supply high volumes of sustainable anode and cathode materials for zero-carbon transport. NEW: Recycling battery metals could supply up to a quarter of Europe’s electric cars by 2030, cutting its reliance on battery mineral imports. Materials from end-of-life batteries and gigafactory scrap have the potential to build up to 2.4 million EVs locally in 2030, according to a new T&E study. But the EU and the UK will not be able to harness this potential unless they secure recycling projects at risk of being cancelled due to high energy costs, a shortage of technical experience or a lack of finance. It’s time to start treating battery recycling like another clean tech and prioritise it in policy and grant making. The EU’s upcoming proposal for a Circular Economy Act should support the scaling of local recycling factories while also restricting exports of battery waste. • Strengthening Partnerships: Altilium and SQM International Lithium visit the Advanced Propulsion Centre We were honoured to visit the Advanced Propulsion Centre UK (APC) in Coventry with the CEO of SQM International Lithium and the Director of SQM Lithium Ventures. As a portfolio company of SQM Lithium Ventures, one of the world’s leading producers of sustainable, battery-grade lithium, Altilium is committed to driving the EV transition with the lowest carbon battery raw materials. The Advanced Propulsion Centre (APC) plays a pivotal role in funding and supporting UK-based initiatives that scale the net-zero automotive supply chain. Thanks to APC’s support, Altilium has scaled its EcoCathode™ green recycling technology and forged partnerships with key players in the UK EV battery supply chain, including Nissan (project name APC23) and JLR (ARMD3). Key discussion points in the meeting: 🔋 Zero Emission Vehicle (ZEV) Mandate: UK government policy requiring car manufacturers to sell a minimum percentage of zero-emission vehicles each year. In 2024 22% of sales must be EV, rising to 80% and 100% respectivey in 2030 and 2035. 🔋 Rules of Origin (EU-UK TCA): Automotive components must meet a 55% local content threshold to avoid a 10% tariff, driving demand for UK-sourced materials. 🔋 EU Battery Regulations: By 2031, new batteries must contain recycled materials: 6% Lithium, 6% Nickel, 16% Cobalt (increasing to 12%, 15%, and 26% by 2036). Failing to meet these requirements could result in market exclusion, highlighting the urgent need for recycled materials. These regulatory tailwinds underscore the critical role of an EV battery recycling industry in delivering sustainable, domestic battery materials to enhance the UK’s automotive supply chain. Together, Altilium , SQM International Lithium and the APC are committed to ensuring the resilience of UK automotive supply chains by providing locally sourced, sustainable battery raw materials.
