I often speak to I&R professionals who feel like they're stuck in a rut at their current firm. Whether that be regarding salary, promotion or getting support for their CPI/ACCA/ACA qualifications. The immediate answer isn't always to look elsewhere. Instead, I'd advise addressing your concerns with your employer first. The main thing you want to figure out is, is there genuine progression on offer at your firm, or are you just going round in circles? Performance/salary reviews are the best opportunity to find this out. If you don't get the promotion/study support/salary etc that you're looking for then ask why and most importantly ask for concrete & actionable steps to get you to where you want to be. If you follow through on these steps and still see no change, it might be time to explore other options. It's also worth looking at how other members of your team have progressed, or not. This can give you an indication of the level of progression available. Salary is more clear-cut. You're either under, at or over market rate for your level. The best way you can find this out is by speaking to a specialist recruiter who can let you know the average salary for someone at your level, with your skillset and in your location. Here’s a quick breakdown: IR35 is tax legislation that determines whether a contractor is a "disguised employee" or a genuine consultant for tax purposes. **Inside IR35**: Contractors are taxed as employees, with income tax and NICs deducted by the agency or umbrella company. **Outside IR35**: Contractors are considered self-employed, benefiting from more tax flexibility and operational control, often through a limited company (PSC) for payments. Understanding your IR35 status is crucial for staying compliant and making informed decisions about the contracts you pursue. IR35 determinations are made on a case-by-case basis, considering factors such as control, substitution, financial risk, and mutuality of obligation. Remember, a watertight ‘IR35-free’ contract is meaningless if the contract terms don’t align with the contractor’s actual working practices.
