The Financial Reporting Council has asked audit bosses to tell the accounting regulator of any plans to sell stakes of their business to private equity. In a letter addressed to audit firms and Recognised Supervisory Bodies (RSBs), FRC Chief Executive, Richard Moriarty, said the regulator is not “in principle against a greater participation of external private capital in the UK audit market” but that its role is to “protect the public interest and support growth”. Katie Hardie, Executive Consultant at The Treasury Recruitment Company, says that following a slow start to the year, activity has picked up in the second quarter. “We’re seeing more movement at the senior level than we’ve seen for the last 18 months,” she observes. “That’s often due to people moving on or retiring from the most senior level.” At the treasury analyst and treasury manager level, Hardie notes the market is also quite buoyant, with high demand for candidates with operational skills meaning that such candidates are able to cherry pick the positions they want. 𝐑𝐞𝐜𝐫𝐮𝐢𝐭𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐩𝐫𝐢𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐬: 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐝𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐢𝐧𝐜𝐥𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐭𝐨 𝐡𝐲𝐛𝐫𝐢𝐝 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 Where recruitment priorities are concerned, “There is also a lot of focus on diversity when we are being briefed on roles,” Hardie says. “A lot of businesses are looking closely at their gender balance, with the goal of bringing more women into treasury departments, especially at the senior level.” According to Hardie, this has become increasingly prominent across Europe, the UK and the US, particularly in the last six months. Meanwhile, hybrid working continues to be a key topic, with Hardie noting that companies should be offering no more than three days per week in the office in order to get the best talent. And a further trend is the rise in demand for people at the management level who have experience of implementing treasury management systems, or automating certain processes and procedures. “The split between doing the operational side of things and having experience of strategic forward thinking is still quite strong for positions at all levels,” she adds.

A great insight into our adaptation to an ever-evolving interim finance market.

One thing that has become clear to me, in a decade of servicing the audit and accounts job market, is that pretty much everything in the world is cyclical. ♻ The market tends to quieten > normalise > explode > normalise > quieten. Often you get 3 firms in the challenger arena that are gun-ho, the rest are quiet, then the next year those 3 switch off and 3 more switch on. 🚀 In recent years, the challengers had the bigger salaries, then the Big 4, then the challengers again, then the Big 4 again. At one point, everyone is climbing sizes of firms to reach the Big 4, the next everyone is trying to get smaller client experience to leave the Big 4. 🧗‍♀️ A firm wins loads of audits, struggles to cope, loses some audits, learns from the losses, wins loads of audits etc. And in terms of recruitment outlook, often things sit on a knife edge, for example: I spoke with a Big 4 Partner the other day who told me that if they won one of the big tenders they had coming up, they would need to hire 150 auditors! ...If they didn't win any of upcoming tenders, they would ideally want to lose some staff. 🔪 Essentially, just like with investments, nothing is ever gauranteed, and no one has a crystal ball. In 2020 everyone stopped hiring, in 2021 everyone wished they'd kept hiring and it went into a frenzy. Sometimes you stay put out of fear and regret it, sometimes you move and regret it.
