HMRC have recently published new guidance to provide help with working out whether employers are connected for the purposes of the Apprenticeship Levy and the Employment Allowance. The guidance is easy to follow and includes details of common pitfalls and covers companies, charities, government bodies and unincorporated organisations so I recommend reading it to make sure you are not accidentally falling foul of the rules. Remember that from HMRC's perspective this stands alongside the Apprenticeship Levy manual and the National Insurance manual, it does not replace them. IR35 – Inside vs. Outside: What You Need to Know As an internal audit recruitment consultant specialising in the contract and interim market, I often get asked about IR35 and the difference between being inside or outside of it. Here’s a quick breakdown: IR35 is tax legislation that determines whether a contractor is a "disguised employee" or a genuine consultant for tax purposes. **Inside IR35**: Contractors are taxed as employees, with income tax and NICs deducted by the agency or umbrella company. **Outside IR35**: Contractors are considered self-employed, benefiting from more tax flexibility and operational control, often through a limited company (PSC) for payments. Understanding your IR35 status is crucial for staying compliant and making informed decisions about the contracts you pursue. IR35 determinations are made on a case-by-case basis, considering factors such as control, substitution, financial risk, and mutuality of obligation. Remember, a watertight ‘IR35-free’ contract is meaningless if the contract terms don’t align with the contractor’s actual working practices. Always ensure the contract reflects the reality of how you work.

We have plenty of candidates who have trained and qualified in audit but for one reason or another are now keen to move away and into other disciplines. Often, candidates feel pigeon-holed and feel that they are unable to secure a role in accounts or tax. ✅ Try and highlight any experience (if you have any) spent in accounts, tax or outsourcing ✅ Explain on CV or cover letter why you want to make the move and why you feel it would be the right move for you and your career (so it doesn’t look like a knee-jerk reaction) ✅ Be prepared to move in two steps by offering up to 30% audit in next role? ✅ Be flexible on salary – your current value is based on your audit experience so you may need to be slightly flexible here ✅ Highlight other skills that you have, such as communication/relationship building/IT/business development ✅ Be prepared to persevere – this might take a little time to secure the right next role ✅ Believe – this can be done! 🌞

According to AccountancyAge, the number of firms with female leaders within the UK’s top 100 has dropped 20% to 12. However, the number of firms with 40%+ female partners has increased by 28%. NATIONAL LIVING WAGE (NLW) AND NATIONAL MINIMUM WAGE (NMW) Employers must pay their employees at least the NLW, for workers aged 21 and over, or the NMW otherwise. The minimum hourly rates change on 1 April each year and depend on the worker’s age and if they are an apprentice. ** 1 April 2024 – 31 March 2025 ** NLW - age 21 and over = £11.44 NMW - 18-20 year old = £8.60 NMW - 16-17 year old and apprentice = £6.40 ** 1 April 2025 – 31 March 2026 ** NLW - age 21 and over = £12.21 NMW - 18-20 year old = £10.00 NMW - 16-17 year old and apprentice = £7.55 The percentage increases for the 18-20 year old rate (16.3%) and the 16-17 year old and apprentice rate (18.0%) are significant. This is a step towards Labour’s ambitions for all adults to receive the same minimum wage. SCOTT’S CHART OF THE WEEK This week it’s the return of HR1 submissions notifying the Ibsolvency Service of potential redundancies. In April, 266 employers submitted HR1 forms, notifying of 18,450 potential redundancies. This marks a significant drop in submissions and potential redundancies compared to March and marks the second consecutive month where both potential redundancies and the number of companies warning of potential redundancies have fallen. There has been a similar pattern over the past two years where the numbers have dropped from March through to April. This has been followed up by an increase in submissions and potential redundancies in May. Could May 2024 follow a similar trajectory? The news earlier this week from Cazoo will add to this, as well as the potential for further store closures of The Body Shop as itsAdministration progresses.
