Meet the Founder: Alex Latham of Chip – Your wealth app. THE UK’S FASTEST GROWING STARTUP Alex spent the first few years of his career working in a variety of different roles across the music industry and some early stage startups.   He then co-founded Chip in 2016 and is currently its Chief Marketing Officer, looking after growth, marketing and design. Chip has been on an insane trajectory recently, as its 2023 results highlight: 🚀 £15.1m annual revenue 🚀 800% YoY revenue growth 🚀 £3.2m of net losses (down 75% YoY) Since the end of 2023 Chip has continued to see crazy growth. Here are the highlights from H1 2024: 🚀 £1.8m monthly revenue, up from £1.2m in January (£22m ARR) 🚀 274k active customers, up from 218k On a year-over-year basis Chip grew almost 800% in 2023. This makes it faster than any other fintech, and any other startup that I track in my database. Here’s what Alex had to say about Chip’s growth, its future, and some advice for future founders: “I'm pretty sure Chip is probably one of the fastest growing companies in the UK. In the last year Chip’s assets grew from £250m to over £4.5bn, and revenues have grown 800%. We're in no way slowing down, our roadmap for 2025 is extremely exciting and we're going to continue to disrupt how wealth is built and managed." Awareness is such an important word. April was Stress Awareness month I wanted to revisit some of the impact and statistics of stress. Approximately 76% of people experience moderate to high levels of stress. Approximately 60% of people experience mild symptoms of anxiety. Approximately one in four people in the UK will experience a mental health problem each year.   Awareness campaigns such as Stress Awareness month help us all to get people talking about our stress response and mental health and help reduce the stigma that can stop people from asking for help. Awareness is such an important word.   This week depending on your situation try to be compassionately self aware and/or aware of others needs.   Be self aware and if you need support, be gentle with yourself whist finding the strength to reach out and ask for support.     If you can, be aware be others also, and whatever the weather this week and however busy you are take the time to arrange a walk and a chat with someone …  a friend, a neighbour or anyone you feel may need support.   Let’s be kind and support each other.

Super excited to share another personal milestone: I've committed to running the Thames 50k Ultra this September.  Why take on such a challenge? Because then I get to push boundaries, strive for self-improvement, and prove to myself that I can conquer new heights - activities which are ALWAYS rewarding. Engaging in these 'outside of work' endeavours, I realise yet again that when the body AND the mind work together in tandem the real magic happens. It’s about physical endurance and mental fortitude. I've also discovered that these challenges fuel my belief in myself, boost confidence, and lead to better decision-making. When I think back to the Athens marathon, I remember feeling completely f*!ked at the finish line, so (I can hear you wondering), how do I stay motivated to keep going? I keep drawing motivation from those who’ve done even more than me - such as Sam (Dojo’s other leading gentleman) who completed a full Ironman. Way to go, mate! Let’s keep sharing our own personal triumphs as often as possible, whether it’s learning to bake, managing to keep a plant alive one month longer than the previous one, or breaking a bad habit. Don’t neglect all the parts of you that have nothing to do with the office. So, who’s up next? What’s your latest victory?

I'm very pleased to share my new piece for The Guardian on the "protege effect" - which describes how sharing our knowledge with another person can enhance our *own* learning and understanding. In Germany, this is known as “Lernen durch Lehren”, but it is less well-established in other countries. Absolutely buzzing to share some exciting news about a project that's been close to my heart over the past few months. It’s been a pretty busy week for us.  We've recently partnered with a founder who's come up with something special… A new app made just for grassroots football. When they said… “I’ve got the rocket, but I need you to be the fuel”.... We knew it was a perfect match. We've jumped in as their marketing and launch team, and it’s been a rewarding journey. This one's personal for me. My son plays for a local team, so I’ve seen: — The passion — The struggles — And the triumphs… That comes with grassroots football. I know how much it means to the players, parents, and coaches who give their all every week. That’s why helping to launch this app feels more like a mission than just another project. We’re gearing up for a big launch on December 1st… And there’s plenty of exciting stuff happening, including some days of filming to look forward to. To bring the football community together, we’ve also kicked off a monthly competition called “Grassroots Goals.” Each month, teams from across the country submit their best goals, and a panel of kids picks the finalists. It’s all about celebrating the passion for the game and giving young players a chance to shine. Here’s a short clip from the podcast series Grassroots Goals. Today’s Budget showed us where the UK Government wants to take our economy and we certainly agree on the importance of significant investment. However, when it comes to investing in the creative sector, we believe the UK Government can do better and hope to see further meaningful action that will support the incredible businesses operating in this space. We must ensure that creative businesses, particularly those based in the regions, receive the targeted support they need to thrive. Our key ask is for a more strategic approach that encourages long-term, sustainable investment in creative businesses. We know firsthand that investment into the creative industries has long-term benefits that far exceed the initial returns. Having invested more than £68 million into creative businesses these past 10 years, we’ve generated profit to put back into the sector, but we’ve also seen businesses grow from fledgling start-ups to sector leaders, boosting regions and acting as catalysts to drive further investment into the UK. Looking ahead to the Spring Budget, we are hopeful for stronger UK Government initiatives that support regional creative businesses, recognizing the untapped talent and innovation outside of London. We want to see a commitment to policies that foster both financial and creative growth, ensuring that the UK remains a global leader in the creative industries.

Yesterday was a blast!! Massive congrats to Lydiah Igweh for pulling together such an awesome #DEI event for the first time. A huge achievement to get headline sponsors like Warner Bros. Discovery and an honour to hear Dr. Asif Sadiq MBE talk about some of the challenges and opportunities ahead for the sector. Also thanks to Kevin Withane (FRSA) - a real champion for change and the person who helped get me & Babbu on the stage in front of hundreds of DEI and #HR professionals 🙌🙌 Main take-aways: 👉 companies are still REACTIVE when they should be more PROACTIVE. 👉 discrimination and poor experiences (especially around RETURN TO WORK) is still very REAL for #parents. 👉 we’re all capable of running the race, but so many of us aren’t given a place at the starting line. 👉 flexible working (despite evidence that it improves #productivity and we all managed during the pandemic) is still woefully behind where it needs to be. 👉 still a lot of box ticking, and celebrating Black History Month or Pride Month does not mean your #culture is inclusive. 👉 if you recruit based on hitting DEI targets, it is unfair on everyone including the person you hired. 👉 easy and low cost ways to improve the lived experience for #employees is to create safe spaces and LISTEN to them. 👉 check-in with your parents, even when they are on leave. You don’t know what’s going on at home and ignoring their #mentalhealth costs you £billions. Excited to follow-up on so many great conversations to see how Babbu can help.
