The economic development in Germany is currently under a lot of pressure. This is also visible in my area of passion the #automotive industry and the transition to #e-mobility. But we believe that a pivot is possible. Here is our latest perspective on “A pivot for Germany – All for growth and growth for all”. According to our results, Germany can increase its GDP by almost 50 percent by 2035. ▶️ With a dual strategy of stronger focus on future fields and higher productivity, plus a massive state investment push, Germany can become more attractive for investments from private sector sources. ▶️ The value of the German economy would grow from 12 to 24 trillion euros, which would mean an additional 31,000 EUR in annual income for households. ▶️ With this growth, central societal challenges can be addressed – with higher investments in education, health, climate change, infrastructure development, and social security systems. 👉 The full report is available here: mck.de/apivotforgermany (English) or mck.de/wachstumswende (German) #WachstumswendeDeutschland #60JahreMcKinseyDeutschland

𝗔𝗰𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗚𝗲𝗿𝗺𝗮𝗻 𝗩𝗖 𝗖𝗮𝗽𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘁-𝘂𝗽𝘀 𝗘𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗲! (at least, that's the hope according to the latest surveys by the German Private Equity and Venture Capital Association (BVK) and KfW Bank). 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁'𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗱𝗲𝗮𝗹? 🤓 The BVK's German Venture Capital Barometer surveys around 200 members quarterly, covering key metrics that describe the business climate in the German VC landscape, including fundraising, exit options, and more. Start-ups are at the end of the VC funding chain. If VC funds face a capital crunch, Start-ups feel the squeeze too. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗔𝗻𝗮𝗹𝘆𝘀𝗶𝘀 📊 I've graphically analyzed the data since 2019 (see image below) and found: 𝗖𝗼𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗮 𝗦𝗵𝗼𝗰𝗸: The pandemic was a shock but also spurred new business models and opportunities. VC sentiment on fundraising and exits was high between 2020 and 2021. However, Start-up entry valuations dropped, possibly due to market pessimism. The deal pipeline remained strong, with robust deal flow quality and quantity. Many Start-ups seized the moment to access VC investments at lower valuations, driven by the pandemic's uncertainty. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗕𝗶𝗴 𝗗𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗶𝗻 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟮: Many factors contributed to this downturn. Notably, the ECB's incremental interest rate hikes aimed at curbing inflation in Europe (see purple line). Increased energy costs, the war in Ukraine (loss of sales markets), supply chain disruptions, and poor market sentiment likely played roles. These challenges made it tough to raise fresh VC capital and secure attractive exits. A backlog of exits still exists. 𝗔 𝗥𝗮𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝗛𝗼𝗽𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝗤𝟮 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟰: The sentiment indicator improved by 10.6 points to -8.9 balance points. A positive trend is also emerging in fundraising and exit options. 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝘄𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗮? 🤔 I hope the situation improves in the coming months and years. Working with German OEMs on a Mobility (you still say Automobile) Strategy since 2008. They know since 15 years or more what they have to do: they just have to do it. The CxU has stood in the way of innovation in mobility and energy for over 16 years - transportation ministers and the VDA have torpedoed all chances of change: bringing us up to this point. And you continue to ask the wrong people for strategy, and have the wrong people to execute: and anyone aware and watching this sees that the VDA and yourself are complicit.

Shaping Europe’s #DeepTech future together! 🌍🤝 One of the highlights at this year’s #FallingWalls Science Summit was our #BCG x SPRIND - Bundesagentur für Sprunginnovationen Executive Table, bringing together leaders from diverse innovation agencies, corporates, and venture capitalists across Europe. Never before have we gathered such a diverse group to shape our deep tech future.  This fruitful discussion marked a powerful step toward a pan-European deep tech strategy, focusing on three crucial changes needed for us to lead in global innovation:  ➡ Change scientific dogma: Almost half of the world's PhDs are awarded in Europe, yet success for scientists is still measured mainly by publications. To empower real-world impact, founding a company should be a natural next step post-PhD. Shifting this mindset can inspire a new generation of science-driven entrepreneurs. ➡ Strengthen business transfer: With German universities investing only 0.1% of their budgets into business transfer, we see an urgent need to rethink these priorities. University transfer centers should move from profit centers to service providers, supporting deep tech startups through long-term investment, encouraging both risk-taking and sustainable growth. ➡ Build a shared ecosystem: While Europe has made strides in early-stage funding, there’s a gap in later-stage investments, especially compared to the US. Encouraging companies and governments to become startup clients and fostering venture clienting are essential steps to create a sustainable ecosystem that helps deep tech startups scale effectively. ++ This is Not a Post for Sympathy, But a Crucial Reminder that taking care of ourselves should always be priority number one. ++ Last December, I arrived in Łódź for business in the early hours of the morning, only to be hit by severe tooth pain. The kind that makes you rush to the emergency room, desperate for relief. Little did I know, this was just the beginning. Back in Romania, where I was having my "work abroad" stint, my partner took me to the dentist. What we discovered was far more serious than I could have imagined: a severe issue with my upper jaw that, if left untreated, could lead to facial collapse. The reality of this hit hard. I had to undergo surgery, and the process is still ongoing. Just this Monday, I underwent another procedure. Now, I find myself living, working, and traveling with a swollen face and temporarily missing a frontal tooth until the end of the month. This experience has taught me a crucial lesson: taking care of ourselves is non-negotiable. As someone with dental phobia, I realize my fear could have put me in an even tougher situation. Ignoring our health can have serious consequences, and it's a stark reminder that we must always prioritize our well-being. So just just keep this in mind; in our fast-paced lives, it's easy to put off those check-ups, to ignore that persistent pain, or to let fear dictate our actions. But we owe it to ourselves and our loved ones to stay on top of our health. Self-care is not a luxury; it's a necessity. Moin Moin. Was Geht? OMR24   A lot is going on, a lot of moving pieces – it’s exciting and fun! Answers to my question before going this year to OMR and my key take away to these: ⚡How to make best use of AI and ML? Other than the name “Artificial Intelligence” suggests, it is not intelligent, it cannot solve new problems (yet). But AI tools are extremely efficient in managing standard tasks, based on experience and data. Therefore, all indirect processes should be targeted asap: Supply Chain, Purchasing, Bookkeeping, Payroll, etc. You need these savings urgently to stay competitive. Get going. Use the Data you have. ⚡How best to manage risk and ops? It is as simple as this: The opportunity is - just f…. do it! Then you have the chance to stay in the business. The risk is - not do it or be too slow. You will lose out and get uncompetitive.   ⚡How to make your team fit for this future? Make AI a Boss Thing! Appoint an AI responsible reporting directly to you. Have an AI responsible in every department. Talk about the opportunities, give confidence that you will manage this and succeed. Invest in your people. Make them be part of something special – and driving AI within the company and for the benefit of the company if very special and very rewarding!   The key consequences for the practical work with my clients are: ✅ You need a clear objective and a road map for the next 12 months (these times you are not able to look out longer) – and then focus on max Top 3 priorities! Your resources and in particular your AI knowledge is still limited. To make a good decision you need to know where you want to be using AI in 12 months. Analyze your potential projects portfolio and decide what brings you the biggest bang for the buck $$$. Then – Focus, Focus, Focus - and - Execution, Execution, Execution! ✅ Don’t overcomplicate it – get going, get experience, learn, and adjust as you go. Speed is far more important than perfection. ✅ Be Technology open and flexible. The application you might choose today might not be there tomorrow or not the best solution for the next phase.   In addition, two hints that I liked very much: 💡Combine your Chatbots for Service, Sales, Technical Hotline etc. with ChatGPT. Significant improvements of customer satisfaction are measurable. 💡Use TikTok as a Sales Channel. For people under 30 years TikTok is already the No.1 search Engine. 53% of the users start the App with the search function. Be fast, take a risk, have fun – I am here to support you being successful for the long run!   #OMR24

Short spoiler: when you burn for an idea 💡, make sure to make the management excited about it, as you need them to sponsor your idea. Pick one person that likes your product and can help you raise your voice. It's also important that such a promotor can make sure you have access to resources and experts in the organization. Support is needed if you want to create something new.    What to expect from that Episode 🎙:  - What is the rational to innovate in a non-core business?  - Why it is important for a car manufacturer to think about mobility as a whole!  - How to keep the fire burning even in bad weather!    A very important question that we are discussing is "what exactly is the core business?", as that is the ultimate question to gain understanding on what a "non-core business" would be. Is a navigation service core or non-core for a car manufacturer? What about helping people arriving on time at a meeting in urban areas? What about helping people to organize a weekend trip with friends? There are many "jobs-to-be-done" where a car may play an important role. In all of these examples people cannot get the whole job done just by using a car. It takes planning, preparation, knowing how to execute a travel, monitoring, and knowing how to modify a travel or the mode of transportation. And not to forget about "the last mile" when finishing a travel (at the point of destination). A car manufacturer may decide if any of these jobs or job steps are considered "core business" or if that term only covers an existing product that currently generates revenues (e.g. car sales). Depending on how a company defines its core business (e.g. the existing line of products, or the core job that is being supported with different solutions) may change how innovation is being managed, focused and budgeted. In a nutshell: Innovating in a non-core business is first of all a question of how you define it, and then a question of how to create a mindset towards helping customers get their jobs done better;)    What do you think? Always asked myself, if I can be happy …always? As an entrepreneur you are in the natural habit of optimizing all aspects of a project so why don’t optimize your life? After many years of learning about what makes us happy, I think it is only a transient state. But maybe we can feel even better … when we are in Flow!
