A few details are needed. ➡️ The source of the ranking is the institute lead by Stefan Bratzel, Prof. Dr.: Center of Automotive Management (CAM) ➡️ the 2023 BEV Sales ranking on the right is straightforward ➡️ the column on the left is listing GEELY as leader for 2023 ➡️ interesting how neither Tesla or BYD took the top spot on the left, and where they are placed for 2023. ➡️ the long term ranking by innovation reads: 1 Tesla 2 Volkswagen Group 3 Geely 4 BYD 5 Hyundai Motor Company (현대자동차) *** ➡️ Methodology for the 2023 ranking: CAM individually evaluated 512 innovations in electromobility for the past year alone that ended up in the sold product. Instructive for every European, from consumer to car maker, to read the highly positive review by Steve Fowler of Geely's new EV small car it has cheekily named the Panda (although Stellantis will have something to say about that). Looks like it fills the huge, glaring market gap left -astonishingly - by Western car makers, for a seriously cheap but practical 4-seat(just) BEV city car; but one capable of doing slightly longer journeys (124 mile claimed range) and up to 50mph on highway. And all that for what may well turn out in the UK almost to match the price of Citroen's £7.5k-plus, max 30mph, 2 seat, 50-mile range Ami quadricycle. In terms of European producers, next step up from Ami will be Dacia's EV Duster coming in the summer - at £15k- plus. It's time to up the game, chaps. For the many well-intentioned consumers refraining from buying Chinese on principle, the temptation to succumb is poised to become far, far harder to resist.

Whenever we talk about hot new models from automotive OEMs, we're often actually talking about tier one suppliers. Car brands are great at design, testing and assembly, but largely rely on mega suppliers to make the constituent parts. No shortage of cars out there with a Bosch ESP module, ZF transmission and Continental tyres... There aren't too many surprises in this Automotive News list of the biggest of the lot. Three observations: 1. Germany remains a superpower with engineering and brand equity to die for, but can't afford to be complacent. Ever. 2. As #EVs take over, expect more Chinese players beyond CATL to storm up the charts. E.g. you would expect BYD to be up there soon, since its batteries are used by Toyota, Kia and others. 3. Morning news: Tipping point for #electric #cars reached in #China. >50% PHEV & BEV last month. Given China’s key role as a automotive market accounting to almost 40% of all new global car sales and 60% of all electric cars sold globally in 2023 is thus further solidified. This is not only relevant from an #automotive perspective as China has also reached peak oil demand in 2023 and has slightly reduced its #oil imports from #Russia, Saudi Arabia etc since then. We live in times where technology, energy and geopolitics are fusing together rapidly.

BMW's global vehicle sales for the first six months of 2024 have been published by #BMWBlog. As the analysis on the left of the picture shows, by using adoption of the curved display for each model type as a proxy for #driver #monitoring #system fitment, we can approximate #DMS units at BMW Group. For the 2025 model year, only the 8-Series, #X4 and #Z4 are judged to not feature the curved display, with the M5 having been withdrawn. The exact start of production date for each model upgraded to the curved display for the 2025 model year is unknown, but BMW looks to be on course to hit 500,000 vehicles a quarter with DMS during this calendar year, and may reach that milestone as early as the July-September (current) quarter. We will know more next week when Seeing Machines publishes numbers for quarterly cars on road for the three months covering April-June. Smart Eye releases its financial results the week after, but it has never published quarterly cars on road data. BMW is judged to have dropped Smart Eye as its DMS supplier and moved to Seeing Machines DMS for the Gen2 product. BMW has standardized on DMS integration within the instrument cluster, and is assumed to be using a #cockpit #domain #controller running Operating System 8/8.5/9 on the third-generation Qualcomm cockpit #applicationsprocessor. Change is coming in 2025, with the introduction of the BMW #NeueKlasse platform which will run Operating System 10 in the cockpit. The Neue Klasse will feature BMW #PanoramicVision, and a 3D head-up display #HUD. The tier-1 is assumed to be Valeo, with Seeing Machines set to continue as the DMS provider going into the third-generation product. The May 2024 edition of Semicast's market report "ADAS & Automotive Vision-based Driver Monitoring Systems" is available for purchase. Significant segmentation of the DMS/OMS market is provided.
